You are responsible for me finding out about pixi.js. I’m going to use it now. Thanks for putting this up early.

I wake up on the day of the competition and find out the theme is Minimalism. A bit hard, considering I had thought I’d be doing a heavily dialogue driven, photography based, adventure game.

After some contemplation, I’ve decided to honor the great, late, comrade film director Andrei Tarkovsky and his greatest minimalist film: Stalker.

Based on the book Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers.

So in line with Tarkovsky’s style there will be:

  • Black and white (with a touch of color)
  • Panoramic landscape pictures
  • Slow camera movement on only one axis
  • Super natural elements
  • Post apocalysm

This stuff is hard

Too much time on code and running around like a headless chicken and too little time on content creation.

Time to knuckle down with some help of creativity sauce

All hail bottled inspiration!

About that tribute to Soviet minimalist film…

It’s still happening. Slowly but surely.

A Tarkowski’s Stalker tribute? The thing was painful to watch and great at the same time.

My favourites, theme wise

I can’t claim to be a huge fan of the theme this time. Minimalism seems too broad and very much something that people implement every LD.

I was at first going to be paying a tribute to some minimalist writer (I read a Raymond Carver short on the first morning of the compo) but  I had planned on a point and click adventure since before the compo so I ended up with an homage to fine minimalist cinema instead with Stalker – referencing the Soviet Sci-Fi classic with the same name. If you haven’t seen the movie, make sure to do so. It’s one of the all time greats.

After rating a grand total of 100 games, I found very few takes on the theme Minimalism that I felt were great. But here comes a rundown of them:
