First Time Jammer

How does Bob Marley like his donuts? With jammin'!

I have been looking forward to joining my first ever game jam; however, I've an underlying anxiety about producing something that isn't very good that drives me to want to create something half decent in 72 hours. I do believe I can make something fun with these constraints; sometimes it actaully works to one's own advantage.

I have made a game in 3 days before; that was my "Super Idle Imagination" clicker satiremade in Flash 8 with AS2 a few years ago. You can check that out here: http://MadeByChaz.com/superidleimagination.html Flash was great for prototyping. This time I'll be using a tool that I've been learning while in isolation, GameMaker Studio 2. I'll be doing everything (art, design, music, code) myself.

I haven't gone through the list of possible themes and written down suggestions for all of them. I'm going to try take a more relaxed approach to the jam and just see what inspiration strikes when the theme is announced.

I shall probably record a timelapse of my screen rather than streaming as I work for I shall most likely be wrestling with my software for most of it!

Anyways, good luck and have fun! See you on the other side :)

Don't Kill Death (Or Die Trying)

Oh my word. I can't believe it's finally done. My first ever game jam has consumed me. I had a blast; I learned lots of new things and it was a really fun challenge to make everything - design, art, code and music - all within the time limit. i was super anxious before joining and I'm so glad I joined it.

So I present "Don't Kill Death (Or Die Trying), a mouse-only survival/action/management game hybrid. Or something like that. :)

Give it a go if you're feeling brave!itch banner.png

Help Soulvester survive the night to help him reach a cure for death in this mouse only, summon and slaughter sim! This was my first ever jam and the first thing I've made in GameMaker Studio after stepping away from making Flash games. I recruited my brother in the final hours to record some voice lines too! I recorded my screen for the entirety of the process so I will be putting together a timelapse video of it soon.

I am inviting feedback in exchange for feedback! I'd love to see your games. This is the first time I've ever done LD and it's been bloody brilliant. So...SHOW ME WHAT YOU GOT!

BEAT THIS!

I'm laying down the gauntlet here and setting this as the first world record score. I dare anyone to try and beat it! As a prize I'll give you a special one-off role in my Discord or something :'D Let the games begin! Let me know if you want me to check out your game, I'd love to see what you made!20200423_011102.jpg https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/dont-kill-death-or-die-trying

Web Version Incoming!

I got a few requests for a Mac version of Don't Kill Death, but unfortunately I don't have a Mac which is needed to export a Mac version from GameMaker. I did however do the next best thing and specifically purchased the HTML5 export module for GameMaker to compile the game for web, so the online version will be playable soon if you missed it because of the Windows .exe not working on your Mac. It will however come with minor quality of life improvements and bug fixes, but when the time comes it will be clearly indicated so as not to confuse with the jam submission. So, keep your eyes peeled!

Can't wait to upload the HTML5 version; I'm genuinely surprised by the general out of the box compatability of the export. There are a few things that need tweaking to ensure it runs properly but in general it appears mostly stable and ran well for me when testing in the browser.

The game recently got some love on Reddit - so in the meantime if you haven't checked it out already, feel free to do so here: https://madebychaz.itch.io/dont-kill-death-or-die-trying

Obligatory results post!

Screenshot_2020-05-13 Don't Kill Death (Or Die Trying) ldjam com Ludum Dare game jam.png Rendered a little speechless at the fantastic feedback and results for my first ever attempt at a game jam. I plan on making a post mortem video soon but for now I still need to digest the amazing fact of being top 100 across all categories. I'm very proud of this, thank you so much to everyone who played, rated, and left feedback on my game to help me improve it for an expanded future release. fb.png
