LD12

Ok, I lied.

Just recently in the IRC I said I was going to sleep. I was wrong. Anyway, I am now nice and awake, sort of, and am going to get started on my game: It takes place in a 7(planned, should be less) story tower. You have to go around getting keys. Why? I don’t know. There is one key on each floor. There are also going to be traps that take away one of your (insert how many stories there are here) health. There will only be one, non-random level, unless I make it with Game Maker. But my planned tools are PDN, MSVC and the free version of PTK. Now, off to get something to eat.

Ok. I want to get a game done for this, so I’m cheating*.

*Cheating means usig GM to make my game. Later though, I’ll convert it to C++ and SDL and post it here. But I WILL get a game done! 2 hours or so to do it, but I will! 😀

My game!

Made with Game Maker. I’ll change it to C++ and SDL some day, but until then, here it is! Use up, down, left and right. ANd I hope I got it in on time, I finished it RIGHT when it hit the deadline here.

Heh, forgot about tools… :P

Well, here’s a screenshot and my tools. I used PDN and Game Maker. No! Don\'t Move! or \

EDIT(About an hour after the compo): WOw, I wonder how I somehow managed to get a screenshot into the first post. Anybody know?

I fixed all the final posts.

Darn, I didn’t make it so guests could download…

Well, SMF has failed me, so here’s a more public download link.

Oops!

Ok, here’s a little background info that I forgot to provide. The game’s name is “The keys to the Tower”. The game takes place in a tower, just not a good one. And you play as a block of… something… with a keyhole in it.

Answering questions

Ok, people seem to have been asking a bunch of questions, so here are some answers. You have to collect all 7 of the keys. The key that’s backwards kills you. That’s all.

Timelapse

No, I didn’t record one. But I’d like to next time, if somebody can tell me how. SO, if you can, comment here to tell me how I can record a timelapse on Windows XP please. 😀

I wrote a little app to take screenshots and webcam shots at the same time intervals. That is how I got my synced picture in picture time lapse. It isn’t ready for public use yet — its just a hacked up thing right now, but I think my project for next LD will be to make it nice and pretty for everyone to be able to use. At destroysound’s suggestion, I’ll also make it command line accessible.

Ah, cool. But any idea how I can record a timelapse without webcam for the NEXT contest? 😛 I like your idea, and if I ever decide that I want to record webcam as well, I’ll use your app.

LD12 Postmortem

Quite literally, postMORTEM. ANyway, after reading the comments, seeing my ratings and my own opionins, I’m ready to do this. Maybe next time I’ll write this during the compo, but I only decided to do it now.

The good:

– I got a game released. I wasn’t really expecting to get one done, but I did.

– The gameplay. WIth GM, collison detecting/stopping you from moving in only one direction can be tough. I pulled it off though.

– The tower and key sprites. I’m not very good at computer art, and not much better and paper art, so these were pretty good sprites for me. I am thinking that making part of the key in 3d would be good, but as of now, I’m just learning to use Blender, so during the creation part, I couldn’t have done it.

The bad:

– The player sprite and the wall sprite. I could have done better with those.

-The game itself. It needed more levels and, quite obviously (:P), a game over/you win screen.

-The fact that I used GM to make it. I wanted to use SDL to make it, but I had no time.

Overall, if I added more levels, more detail and more traps, I think that it could become sort of fun.

Until next LD,

I think you are right on all counts — great work finishing and with some more content could be fun.

Timelapse

What would be a good interval to take timelapse shots during a Ludum Dare compo?

I did every 15 seconds 😉

Well, I’ve discovered that screenshots don’t take up much hard drive space, so 15 seconds sounds pretty good.

How long do you want your final timelapse vid to be?

whoops forgot to type my name… I am the above poster.

I usually run mine at one per minute. It makes big folders, but not TOO big.

@jovoc: What encoding software did you use?

LD14

Well, I’m hoping to get something done….

So, I didn’t get anything done last time. I’m hoping to this time, if I can think of something for the theme that hasn’t been announced yet :P. I’ll be making a really simple game with Torque Game Builder, so that I can learn to use it. But, I probably won’t get something done with that, and be forced to make a really quick game with something else.

Planned tools:

  • TGB for making the game
  • Paint.NET for graphics
  • That’s all!

Good luck with your game! Hope you blog about it on our site so we can see how your learning process goes.

And my workspace

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v476/julianmh/ld14workspace.jpg

Filled with crap, it’s my desk. The CDs by my Laptop are, from lrft to right, Guns N’ Roses: Use Your Illusion II, Pennywise: About Time, and Pennywise: Full Circle. The Pennywise are there because I’m seeing The Offspring in Toronto with Pennywise opening.

My game has changed again

Now it’s going to be using Flash CS3 for everything. I just hope that I can learn Flash and make a game in the next day or so, all while listening to Pennywise :P.

EDIT: I thought I posted another post, so ignore the title.

My game

I used Senocular’s KeyObject Class for the key presses, FYI.

Game with or without sources? (EDIT: Or in a page, with it the right size, etc?)

Rather simple game, just use the up and down arrow keys to move, and avoid the rectangles that are coming for you. You have 5 lives. You are the circle. The game gets rather hard pretty quickly too, so post your scores! You get one point for each ‘wall’ you sucessfully avoid.

I got to a bit higher than 160, could tell exactly since it wipes the score the moment you die XD.

Very Very cool! It seems like sometimes there’s just no possible path though. Maybe i’m just not that good though :)

60-ish. Did you bother to make sure there was always enough space to get through? :)

The thought never crossed my mind. But, it never crossing my mind makes the game much more challenging, no? 😛

yeah, ’round 75 this time. it’s addicting 😛

LD15

Well…..

I’d love to take part in LD15, but I currently have no Dev tools on my computer…. If I can install some and all that crap, I can take part, but I probably won’t be, so don’t expect an entry this time. I do have some ideas for Caverns though.

make a board game!

I’m getting confident in some things!

Well, looks like I might get a game done.  It’s going to be command line, that’s all I’ll reveal right now. Windows only, too :(. I wanted to make it Mac and Linux too, but it won’t happen. I don’t mind though, it’ll be a cool game.

I’m tired.

So, I have a start. But that’s about it. I have a map, nothing moves on it though. And now I need to sleep. Goodnight.

My Progress

Well, i now have a J that moves around like The Flash and an @ sign that you move around. I’m implementing PoV’s timer code, too, but I haven’t yet. There’s also a little bit of dialouge at the beginning of the game. No screenshot yet, though.

More progress

http://d-games.co.cc/LD15%20-%20Cave%20Invader.exe

I have a prototype! No screenshot, just an exe. This is not the game,  it’s just what the game is so far,and I need it tested! Test away, people!

Well…

I’ve uploaded an entry. I’m not linking here yet, because I’m planning on making it better, but it’s uploaded. Right now, I’m totally stuck – I’ve got code to switch to a new level, but it doesn’t work. I can’t figure out why it won’t, either. I’ve been asking on IRC, but haven’t gotten a response, so unless I find out what’s wrong, I don’t get a better entry.
