Save the Lemming - Save the Day!

title card final.png

Your best bro Chad has a really important date to go on, and has asked you to look after his pet lemming Zack and handle a few chores for him. Can you manage everything and keep Zack (or his replacements) alive before Chad returns home?

Did anyone make an incremental game?

Looking for incremental/clicker/idle games that people have made. It's a personal favourite genre of mine, and I'd hate to miss any that got made this jam.

Looking for some web games

I've got some free time this weekend, looking to rate and review some of your games. If you've got a game that runs in a web browser, then drop a link below and I'll get on rating it and leaving a review asap.

Our game Jake, Zack, and Chad's Day Out can also be played in your browser if you've got a few minutes to spare to return the favour.

No Lemmings were harmed in the making of this game*

Theme Suggestions

Capture.PNG

I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on these and why you would or wouldn't pick them.

Can we get a theme keyword ban

For the words villian, bad guy, enemies?

I swear, so many awful suggestions get put in every time with exactly the same terrible concepts linked to those words.

If you are about to make a suggestion (or have already submitted) anything close to resembling the idea "you are the bad guy", please refrain from doing so as you clearly have no idea what the point of a theme is and are going to make theme selection unnecessarily tedious.

/Rant

Finally done!

Capture.PNG

Another year, another jam, another four thousand un-salvagable theme suggestions. I really wish there was an automatic filter to just remove anything with the words 'you' 'player' 'villian', might have saved me half an hour of my life in having to click buttons to say no. Don't forget, floating islands, light and dark, and the most dreadful and overused theme in video game history - space.

I'd like to hope that the people doing the voting are better game designers than those making the suggestions, but the ratios aren't looking too good for that. Expect another year of people complaining about the theme. Again.

What was with the frogs?

Not so sure about round 2...

Capture.PNG

Feel free to change my mind in the comments. I'd be really interested in reasons why a theme on this list would be great. If you can, give me three examples of games from three different genres, with three different core mechanics for the theme you want to defend.

Any artists looking to team up in the jam this year?

I'm down a team member this year but would love to be able to collaborate on a game project with someone with more artistic skills than myself. I'll be working in Unity, and while I'd prefer to stick to making a 2D game this time, as you can see from my profile I'm not opposed to making something in 3D. I'm primarily a programmer and game designer with several years experience making games for both Ludum Dare and Global Game Jam events.

Might as well give this a quick plug in case anyone finds it helpful

A simple unity project set up for quick and easy game-jamming. github link

What is this, and why does it exist?

Fed up with spending hours during game jam implementing things you know you’ve already done in every project before?

Getting close to the deadline and worrying about whether you should spend time polishing your mechanics, or implementing menu screens and audio options?

Want a better alternative?

I did, so I’ve put together a simple unity project to work as a base template for pretty much any game jam game you can think of (that isn’t networked multiplayer - but seriously don’t even think about it when you’ve got less than 72 hours!).

What's in it

  • 4 Pre-made unity scenes with animated transitions
    • Main Menu
    • Example Gameplay Scene (set up as a 2.5d platformer with placeholder models)
    • Gameover
    • Testing Scene (for when you need to check model import scale, particle effects, or other stand-alone things you plan to make a prefab of)
  • Options Menu
    • Three audio sliders (music, effects, ambient) hooked up to an Audio Mixer
    • Graphics settings
  • Highscore system
  • Healthbars
  • Clock/Timer (counts up or down - currently rigged to 'gameover' when time runs out but this can be easily adapted)
  • Interfaces for basic game objects
    • Interactables - shows a prompt when in range, and then responds to a user input (signs, doors, chests etc)
    • Collectables - triggers a function then removes itself from the scene (currently increments score) (coins, stars etc)
    • Hazards - triggers health loss to player but remains in scene (traps, enemies etc)
    • Simple prototyping assets for all of the above
  • In game pause menu
  • Minimap
  • Camera Shake
  • A handful of free models to use as placeholders while you prototype.

Everything has been designed to be as modular as possible, with prefabs you can drag and drop into your scenes, with minimal dependency between objects. Don't need something? Just delete it.

What can I do with it?

Make a game!

But seriously, don't just download this, do nothing to change or improve the project, and then pass it off as yours. See this as a foundation you can use to build off, or just as a handy reference for those basic features that the vast majority of games have in some form or another. Don't upload this to the asset store and try to make money off it.

If you have any suggestions, bug reports, or just want to say 'hey thanks for this, it helped me make my game' drop me a message and I'll make sure I read it and try to address your points. And if you did make a game with this, it would be so awesome to play it - that's what this project exists for after all. Let me know you made a game with this and I'll prioritise it for review.

Disclaimer

Everything is provided 'as is' and I won't be updating this during Ludum Dare/Global Game Jam (because I do those myself). Using this template requires you to understand the fundamentals of building games in unity engine, and basic c# programming knowledge. This project was designed and built in unity 2017 (long-term support) and I have not tested it with older or newer versions of the engine. Update at your own risk!

Good Luck, Have Fun

Are you an artist looking to collab?

I'm down a team member this year so I'm in need of your artistic experience. I'll be working in Unity, and while I'd prefer to stick to making a 2D game this time, as you can see from my profile I'm not opposed to making something in 3D. I'm primarily a programmer and game designer with several years experience making games for both Ludum Dare and Global Game Jam events. Whether you've got a great eye for pixel art, or you're like me and can't get enough of that voxel style, I'd love to hear from you if you're interested in teaming up.

Ludum Dare 55

Just when I thought it would be safe to release my new game on itch....

It's Ludum Dare! I guess the release date will have to be pushed back to make way for all the awesome games that will be made this weekend. And I'm going to join in with the fun and try to make something solo (not sure if I'll compo or jam yet, will depend on the theme).

Anyone else planning on jamming with Pico-8 this time?

please don't be fishing. please don't be fishing. please don't be fishing.

votes.png

Seriously - as much fun as I would have making a fishing game, I'm certainly not going to have fun playing any more than like 2 of the 3000 fishing games that will be made. Why do people who come up with these themes and then vote on them not understand that they are not the only people who will be making a game for this event and a huge part of what makes Ludum Dare different and the game jam event is how many people actually take the time to play and rate the games. Themes that are too restrictive and result in too many similar games (like fishing) ruin that part of the experience because no one wants to play crappy made in a weekend prototype fishing mini game #2465.

With 5 hours still to go until LD55 kicks off..

There's still plenty of time to help out a fellow game developer and do some play-testing of my upcoming Lo-Fi Pico-8 Endless Runner

Skateboarding is not a crime!

ldjam55_0.png

I found a concept for the theme 'summoning' that I'm really excited to work on, and I've managed to get some progress made after ~3 hours work. You play as a skateboarder who has to make an appearance at court before noon and pay a fine for the crime of skateboarding. Except you don't have any money and noon is only 3 minutes away! Skateboard around the city gathering as much loose change as you can find and make it to the courthouse in time. Just don't get caught by the cops!

I've got some gameplay done (you can move around and collect things and get on and off your skateboard). I'm going to spend the afternoon getting the rest of the city map built, then this evening add the timer and scoring mechanic. The plan for tomorrow will be to add the cops with pathfinding ai.

How's everyone else getting on with the jam?

Halfway through Day 1

ldjam55_1.gif

I've made some progress. The city map is ~2/3rds complete, I've got some basic gameplay done. Going to try and wrap up the level design tonight and get the central game loop completed and playable. Already feeling like I've over-scoped this...

How's everyone else getting on? Show me what you're building in the comments!

And I have something that can be played!

I still have a lot of things I want to add to this game, but for now (and in case things go badly this afternoon/evening) I have a complete game experience that can be played and could submit.

If you'd like to do a playtest you are welcome to. https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=141715

BAIL OUT! is now available to be played and rated!
