My concept is a land development and power generation game. I'm so happy to have the base mechanics working day one.

Tools used

  • Engine: Unity 2017.1
  • Sound: Audacity, harmonica
  • Art: GIMP 2.8

Fun

I’m someone who has clocked way to many hours in Sim City and Transport Tycoon. I love management and building games. I also like clicker games so my barometer for fun may be a bit skewed. I like my game for some simple ideas and the potential I see in it but I can sympathies with the sentiment that this game is not fun. I think having a better UI, maybe with bars instead of number, would make information easier to digest and reduce the learning curve. Maybe by adding a better tutorial, the gist of the game would be better understood.

Theme

The “running out of power” theme may be my favorite Ludum Dare theme so far. I like all they directions that it can be taken.

Graphics

The solar panel is a really recognizable shape so even my simple boxy version of it look quite good. I used the tree object that comes in Unity to build my trees. I feel like I need to learn how to better utilize this tool.

Audio

This part I had a lot of fun with. I recorded myself playing my harmonica for the main music and game over screen. I may have put a bit too much time into this endeavor as I didn’t make button clicking sound or any other sound effects for all the actions in the game. Time management is still an aspect of game jamming that I can get better at.

Post Jam Ideas (stuff removed to mitigate scope creep)

As you buy land your purchases affect the value of the land around. The more developed the land the higher its value, pushing up the value of the land around it. Having cities on the map that would expand and eat up land as they grow. This would add an element of competition with cities for land. Expand the choices for building, for example having a solar boiler that would have production tied to the number of plot around it that are mirrors.
