Cavern Chase – Postmortem/Words on development

This is going to be short and sweet. because my Model M makes a racket and it’s nearly 3AM.

About the game :

Well it’s the second ‘game’ i’ve made this year, it’s simple and has that one-more-go factor to it(at least in my opinion).

Things that went right :

Oh, So much went right and I was overjoyed when they did and it was finished and it actually ended up being pretty righteous. sound was nice and easy to do, graphics took the longest(the playersprite mostly – I was pretty lazy when it came to the floor tiles. Coding was fairly easy, the generation of the floor was a bit tricky but I got it in the end and was amazed when it all worked without a hitch! Scoring and highscores were easy to do, you get 1 point per step(~60pts/sec) and at 100,000pts(add : it’s actually about half an hour) something the world changes.

Things that went wrong :

Oh god the collision was a nightmare. The way i’d written it was everything except the score was moving at 2px a frame left, and Game Maker doesn’t like to do collision very well with moving objects because they are notorious for making the object stop without warning. This of course, led to problems with making gaps in the platforms. I think I completely squashed it though, but I think it might come back in a very very rare case.

ADD: People have commented about the logs that materialise out of nowhere, and they were a hacky bugfix that allowed me to get away with just randomising the floor/fire generation and letting it run wild(there’s a 25% chance of getting a fire tile) as anything more than a 2-tile jump is impossible(note : all two tile jumps are possible, anyone saying otherwise just got unlucky.).

Final Words :

I had a lot of fun coding this. Small games are easy to make, can sometimes be horribly addictive, and a big rush when people like them :)

My personal highscore is 20,171 – try to beat it!

I’ll definately be doing this again.

I have WAY too much spare time on my hands…

…because i’ve done all my voting now.

All 144 entries, 29 of which either :

  1. I did not have the required platform. (linux, mac only games)
  2. I did not have a good enough graphics card. (games needing 2.0 shaders etc etc)
  3. Crashed at startup for reason (2) or other unknown reasons.

The lucky 29 entries that didn’t work got voted only in community, because(obv) I couldn’t play their games.

I think I voted on around 29..

There are still people who won’t play games requiring SM 2.0? O_o

You are psycho :) I noticed this 100% coolness yesterday, it’s really impressive! I’m still working on my 25% coolness!! Thanks for making the effort with everyone’s games.

Yeah, I’ve been watching your Coolness medal being dipped in ever more expensive materials since the beginning. You do indeed have too much time on hand :).

You’re great,where’re you find this post’s source ?

Some food that i’m eating.

Because it never occured to me that I should do foodpics during LD48 itself(too busy coding!), here’s one.

I dub it the tower of meat – It is very tasty.

That is, some fried burgers with chips and a healthy lashing of ketchup.

fried burgers??

Updated version of Cavern Chase for those who wanted to see more :)

Cavern Chase 1.2p*

This has more content. I couldn’t really think of more stuff to add, but it should be more interesting for those who thought it needed a bit more variety.

If you play and start to wonder “where did that background go?” Not a bug. Took it out because it was UGLEH.

*1.2p = 1.2 post LD

I believe this is my statement of intent.

I am in.

I had an awesome time last LD48.

I hope to dear god the theme is good though – I wouldn’t want to have to make a tasteless “anti-twilight fandom” game now…

It is indeed a horrendously tasteless theme. I jokingly added it with the subtitle “First Person Squee-er” – I didn’t honestly expect it to get into the list!

I suppose i’d better post something…

I’m doing something. It has fog of war. It has sparkling vampires to kill. It involves exploring(and not tentatively)

There will be boats for exploring. There’s a Sword and a Lantern. Both are needed for exploring.

It will be awesome.

You just know it’s going to be awesome.

How dare you sparkle at me?

Devlin’s Foodpics dump for the first day.

Because I want to be working all day, my food pics will be posted at the end of the day.

Although i’ve been a bit bad and had my lunch and I forgot to take a picture of it.

Although here we go…
For breakfast I had toast. I was barely awake and couldn’t see very well, so no picture.

For Lunch, I had a teapot of Earl Grey and meatballs :)
Teapot!

For my tea, I’m having my special recipe spicy noodles with added hot sauce 😀 and a nice mug of Earl Grey to go with.
My Tea!

I’ll see you near the end of tomorrow with the last of my food pics

That’s true in real life, too.

What’s left?!?!

Man, there’s a whole lotta roguelikes 😀 I’m gonna have some fun come voting time…

Things left to do :

Make combat and “leveling” work
Put in the rest of the enemies (not just sparkling vampires and TROGDOR)
Add the treasure and the church (spend money at the church to restore HP and buy potions)
The rest of the areas, dungeons etc etc…

A screenshot of part the World Map 😀
Oh look, the world map!

vixy.net will help you

Also, locate your browser cache, load the video and wait until it buffers fully, and look for the newest file in your browser cache folder (it will be named 5yfghwe467wthawershit56hsr4y6hxdrty but this is it!), rename it to .flv and convert to something. (SUPER is a super converter)

In response to my comments :)

pythong says …

haha, I have the most evil book in the world, but which is worshipped by mages? i always thought it would be the manual for windows ^^
nice game!

Mages can be evil too :) Just because it has a skull+crossbones cover, doesn’t mean it isn’t a manual for Windows 😉

SonnyBone says …

I thought the skeleton was a villager at first, so I just kept bumping into him. HE MURDERED ME.

Nice use of the theme.

You are indeed surprisingly weak at the beginning of the game. I was hoping to have a whole level-up system but I decided it would have taken too long.

Hamumu says …

I really liked it, except that you have to go past all these guys who are lethal. After reading the walkthrough, I thought I’d give it another shot and when I got to the mountain I got one-shotted by a guy standing in the middle of the passage. I couldn’t have avoided him! I want to see more of the game, but it’s just too vicious.

I really like the graphics.

Would appreciate auto-repeat on the keys!

Thanks! It took me quite a while to get the graphics the way I wanted but at the time it was very much early days :) You should play left handed, your sword is longer :fnarr: it doesn’t affect gameplay though.

It’s possible to get to the top of the mountain without being hit – dodge moar 😉
Auto-repeat was planned but I guess I never got round to it.
A couple of cheats if you want to see more …
Pressing F7 will remove all the fog.
Pressing F8 will give you 40 HP, The Sword, the Lantern, the Book, and enough Skill to kill just about anything before the Dragons.
There comes a great price for such cheatery though…

Frimkron says …

I was killed by a Trogdor 😛 I must come back and finish this one. Really enjoyable!

You’re very near the end! I’d read the walkthrough, it has hints on how to deal with those pesky dragons :)

Oh boy, that’s tough to play with Wine (the entire screen is inverted!). I’ll try it on my other computer when I get the chance.

Declaration of Intent

So, it’s that time of year when Ludum Dare happens! 😀

BUT on Saturday, it’s also my birthday, so I might not be able to code anything!

But here it is, my Declaration of Intent for LD #17 😀

Happy birthday!

My birthday was on tuesday. :)

It’s 4:09am. It’s my birthday(i’m 24, factfans).

I need to sleep, let my brain dream me up a great idea 😀
See you in 8 hours or so!

EDIT :: I found a way and I managed to submit it before the lines closed 😀

Comment answering time (Devlin style)

It’s about that time where I reply to some of the comments :)

Perrin says …
For a 2 hour game it’s a pretty good effort, could desperately use some in-level checkpoints.

That’s a good suggestion, but I think I prefer it to remain challenging :)

Neilo says …
Good effort for 2 hours, however it’s pretty damned frustrating!

Yep, I didn’t have much time to sanity check it before I decided to submit – I cut it really bloody close! 😀

Almost says …
My biggest complaint is that multiple hats do not stack like a tower.
Also, distance jumping off the edge of a platform is hard sometimes.

Hahaha! That’s an ace idea.. But I fear it would have gotten unwieldy(or slow :o) so I decided to allow you to wear the hat after you got them all, so you knew when the exit was open if you couldn’t see the exit itself.

Devlin’s Declaration of Intent

I’m in like the King
It’s on like Donkey Kong

so now tha knows.

Also, i’ll be using Game Maker with a hint of sfxr and some MS Paint/GraphicsGale worked in there :)
