LD29

First LD & Hopefully first FINISHED game

Hello!

After messing around with game dev concepts for a few weeks I am going to do the only logical thing and try to complete a Ludum Dare lol :)

Engine/Code: Unity & C# (A language I’m trying to learn now)

Graphics: Ragepixel and Pixelmator (I suck at this, I’m not going far beyond pixel art)

Sound: Strong area, probably a combination of Ableton Live, Renoise, Max4Live, Reaktor, Field recordings etc maybe even that sfxer everyone speaks highly of.

Wish me luck, I will need it lol. Hopefully I can find the IRC channel and ask some nice people for help there :)

Struggling hard, going to sleep

Basically I have a shark, and it blinks green when it eats fish.

I honestly spent at least 1 hour on the rotation of the shark, and it still doesn’t feel right.

No fucking clue what I’m doing next, I’ll figure that out tomorrow/today.

Now that is a one awesome shark.

Bizarre Rush!

I finished my first game and my first ludum dare.

I can’t believe how hilarious it was to watch someone on Twitch play my game for the first time. He did find a bug, but I was just lol’ing my head off the entire time before that!

What a bizarre rush it is to have someone play your game.

Anyways incase anyone is curious: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-29/?action=preview&uid=35743

“Shark Feast” Post Mortem

What a ride.

This was my first Ludum Dare, I did the 48 hour competition, and WOW did it feel challenging. I am so glad I finally finished something from start to finish with all my own assets. I can truely call this MY game.

So it seems people are posting post mortems, so how about I throw some thoughts in.

What went well:

  1. Audio – This is something I normally don’t do when I’m prototyping games, but I really should because on the grand scheme of things its something I only spent about an hour on it, and I think it made a world of difference.
  2. Gore/Particles – Although this might have been a cheap trick, I really like how the level of gore and splashing particles made a difference to the fun factor of the game.
  3. Pixel Art – I suck at graphics, and resorted to pixel art. Strangely, I had no complaints about this, and I actually think its one of my favorite aspects of the game.

What didn’t go well:

  1. Controls – I easily spent 9+ hours on the rotation of the shark. A lot of it was rewriting the system 3 times. First, I adjusted the position directly, then I translated the positions, finally I ended up applying forces to a rigid body. In the first two cases, I was rotating the entire game object instead of just the art, so all my controls were backwards if the shark was going right or left. Even after all that work, it still felt it could feel better. Also, I feel the shark should be able to go diagonal.
  2. Difficulty – Gaining health from munching on enemies instead of when killing them resulting in an overly simple game once the player understands the controls. There are a lot of different ways I can fix this, and have the hooks in place, but I simply ran out of time.

Closing thoughts:

Ludum Dare was a challenging blast and I am going to try to start to try to attend all of them. Thanks to all the people who have already commented on my game. I’m having a blast playing everyone’s entries. What a talented community!

Swift for Ludum Dare?

Been poking at this Swift language, and I’m not very good at it yet.

Is anyone considering writing their game in Swift?

That’s a bad idea. It only allows your game to be downloaded on iOS devices.

I’m curious – are apps programmed in Swift able to be compiled for versions of OS X prior to Mavericks? (My limited research is that there is only limited support for Mountain Lion, and no support at all for versions of OS X prior to that…)

As other people said, Mac only, so probably a bad idea :(

I’m in

This will be my second Ludum Dare.

Trying to go into this one with very little expectations and no prep really. We’ll see how that goes lol

  • Audio: Ableton .. maybe Renoise
  • Graphics: Pixelmator .. maybe Cinema4D
  • Engine: Unity

I was going to use Swift, but I decided last minute that the audience would be pretty limited.

If you are interested in some swift tutorials, I have a couple (including a game) over here: http://www.johnmullins.info

Transition between worlds

I’m failing horribly this year, but I do have a cool transition between worlds.
