Binary Gambit reporting. We are in!

bglogo9

We are a team of two and this will be our first Ludum Dare. Our previous projects have been small in scope but we hope Ludum Dare will challenge us to create something exciting with very little. Our work will be recorded and put up in our post mortem in the form of a timelapse video. Starting in the middle of Saturday due to our timezone is also going to present a massive challenge.

Country: Australia

Language: AS3

Libraries: Flashpunk

IDE: FlashDevelop

Also I made a short warmup vid showing off my workspace. Also proof that the timelapse is going to work!

The first sleep break

Hey Darers,

After 12 hours we have a decent prototype to show. We need to sleep now but tomorrow we have a whole lot of gameplay to add on top of this simple framework.

I personally already learnt a lot, especially that a Go-PRO camera doesnt have enough battery power to last 12 hours. Still I managed to capture the design phase in timelapse and I’ve had the screen capture software running the entire time.

Binary Gambit out

Postmortem – Tilegrid

We set out to simply finish a small scope project within the time limit and ended up surpassing our own expectations. More than four hours was spent designing the concept and almost nothing went wrong during development. Our final product is remarkably similar to our initial ideas.

After we received emergency feedback from a number of friends, the game play was streamlined both by simplifying the mechanics and through tighter level design. In the final hours we rushed to add multiple levels and UI.

We took advantage of our team members strengths. Pupnik worked on the mechanical side of the game (scoring, tile interactions, backend), while Abregado worked on the graphical side (UI, tileset, sound).

The timelapse of the entire development can be found on our YouTube channel here:

Surprises

  • The theme was generic
  • only spent ~22 hours actually working on the project
  • GOPRO batteries dont last long!

Hurdles

  • bitbucket was broken
  • more dramas with recording than with the actual project

Things we learnt

  • proved to ourselves we can make something polished in a short time
  • could have increased scope
  • having emergency testers is awesome!
  • cooking in advance or ordering food to save time
  • more time spent on design initially saves more time later
  • need better instructions, UI and tutorialization

Personal evaluation

  • could have spent more time actually working
  • didn’t do much for the theme
  • fantastic teamwork
  • team had a unified vision
  • final product was as originally envisioned

LD27

The team at Binary Gambit is in for LD27. This time around we wont be doing a timelapse due to us both being sick.

Our tools for this round will be:

  • Love2D
  • Associated libraries as needed (LUBE, Hardon Collider, ect)
  • Photoshop
  • Tiled level Editor
  • bfxr

The pre-jam cleanup is done and the workstation is looking great. We’ve upgraded from the old netbook we were using to a decently powerful laptop.
