Ludum Dare 49

Hello Ludum Dare! Here's Day 1 progress.

Not sure how this whole thing works totally. But here we go.

The most I did today was make five ambient loops that will serve as the background music. I'll probably make a few more. Hey FL Studio users - if you wanna make unique ambient music really easily, just start throwing random samples into Fruity Convolver. Works like a charm. convolver.PNG.

I don't really have anything else to show, so I'm gonna go to bed and work as hard as I can tomorrow. Don't know if I'll finish this in time for the compo. Frankly, I don't know if I really care. As long as I get it published for the jam then I'll be satisfied.

Oh, have I mentioned I've never finished a game before? Yeah. This'll be fun. I'm assuming that 80% of the other submissions will use Kevin MacLeod or some sh*t like that for music so I'll get a decent Audio score by default. Fingers crossed :P

Why must you be like this, Clickteam Fusion?

Turns out Clickteam Fusion doesn't support .mp4 files for some unknown reason, so I'm forced to use .wmv files. Which probably makes me the first person to export a .wmv file in the last 5 years. wmv.PNG I have to make the bitrate pretty low so it looks kind of garbage, but if I didn't, then this game would be almost 500MB. (I'm planning on having 14 more video files.)

Anyways. Good morning Ludum Dare. I've worked an hour straight with little distractions so far, which is a personal best for me. Let's see if I can keep it up.

This is getting kind of monotonous.

Make background. Export. Draw obstacles. Export. Import it all. Change a few bits of code. Repeat. Kind of boring, but it's progress. prog1.PNG The graphics suck. I know. I'm trying to tell a lot with a little. Welp. Back to work!

How the music will work

There's five loops total, with three versions each. I won't spoil the purpose of the different versions. Here's me showing off one of the tracks + another version of it.

I'm going to take a break now.

Back to work!

I was messing around with different effects for the obstacles and I stumbled across one that instantly made all the levels look cooler. subtract.PNG Although, effects can only go so far to hide the crudeness of my graphics. :P

I'm gonna work a little more before showing gameplay footage.

Summary of the game, plus gameplay footage!

The game is called... drum roll please... Werlds.

The premise? There's 5 different Werlds where you must navigate through the obstacles to each one of the edges of the screen. The Werlds you visit are based off of your actions. Once you reach the end of Werld 5, you are taken to the second Layer, in which things start to become more chaotic, glitchy, and unstable. There are three Layers total. It sounds confusing but it all makes sense once you play.

And here is the gameplay I promised earlier.

Currently Layers 1 and 2 are finished. I'll get to work on Layer 3 when I come back from dinner.

Also, yes, the backgrounds are from Windows Media Player. XD

And that's a wrap for Day 2!

I'm done with all of the music, and tomorrow I'll be done with all of the game. songscreenie.PNG Good night!

I'm almost at the finish line...

The game is completed. I'll have to make separate desktop and web versions because apparently HTML5 doesn't support some of the effects I used. I'm doing some last minute testing right now, but once I'm done with that, I'll submit it for the compo. sourcefilescreeni.PNG

EDIT: I guess Clickteam Fusion hates me so no web version. Windows only. Sorry!

Sorry. I should of playtested more.

I've heard the complaints about the level skipping oversight and the shake effect on Werld 1 Layer 3 being too strong. I made a patched build that fixes both of those so you should be able to beat it the intended way now. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/werlds

Shameless self-promo.

My game is called Werlds. It's about exploring the same psychedelic levels, except things get more chaotic over time. I'm painfully close to the 20 ratings, so playing it for a couple minutes would help me out a lot! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/49/werlds screenie4.PNG

If you leave a comment I'll try to get to your game too, if I haven't played it already.

The results are in!

My best placement was in the Mood category, ranking 259th. Weird. I totally thought Audio would be my highest rated. Whatever. I had a fun experience and that's what matters most. And thank you to the select few do did enjoy my game. :)
