McPixel hasn’t said the last word yet!

So, I am really satisfied with what I achieved this LD, and I must say that good planning is to blame for that :)

I got all excited and uploaded the game to Kongregate, but then I thought “Wait! If I made 6 levels in one day, how many could I make in a week?”
So I took it down from Kong, and I plan to make many more levels now!

Sitelock madness!

So, I had some hard time preventing my LD20 (the previous one :P ) game from spreading around the internet like mad, so i thought about sitelocking it this time. So I did, and during the short period when it was on Kongregate, someone already put it on his site. I wouldn’t mind, but since I decided to take it down from Kong and continue development, I didn’t want it to spread over the internet beforehand.

And to my astonishment, the simple sitelock worked and the game didn’t launch :) So I immediately got this idea in my hand: if I can rule out playing that game, I can pull off a prank :P So, I changed the sitelock to play the special ending right away if the sitelock test fails :)

Uhm…. I guess you would need to see the special ending to get the joke :P So I’m gonna shamelessly plug my entry into this post

tl;dr – Someone stole my game – it was sitelocked – changed sitelock to a pranky one – win – ps, play my game

Ok, I’m in, but with a different take.

My take on the October challenge is to sell an actual copy of a game, which I didn’t manage to do so far. I have licensed flash games, but I never even tried to sell a copy of a game directly to end-user.

So, my game is… McPixel!
I have already begun work on this and made a few levels. I need to pull myself together and manufacture the levels like there’s no tommorow!

Anyways, the idea is to take it to the mobile market. I hope it will work well!

Packaging your game

Ok, I guess everyone here packaged and submitted the game already, but as I was trying some of them out, I thought that it’s a good thing to post some advice on how to make your game work out of the box, thus getting more views and plays. Consider repackaging the game if some of the below points apply to yours!

How to have your game working out the box:

  • First of all
    • Listen to suggestions, people will surely feedback if the game is not working for some reason! Check comments, come to IRC and ask if the game runs fine.
    • Make a gameplay video and include it in your game links! Even if someone is unable to play, he can give you some ratings (e.g. Graphics and Audio)!
  • Downloadable games
    • Subdirectory - Include a directory with your game files in the downloadable archive, it makes unpackaging way easier!
    • Decrease size – make sure you remove all redundant files form the archive!
    • File name – avoid using file names such as ld.zip, ld22.zip, alone.zip etc.
  • Java
  • AS3/Flash/HAXE/Stencyl
    • Include classid parameter when embedding!
    • Add a preloader if your game is over 1MB!
  • Love2D
  • Python
    • Use Py2exe!
    • Keep the source inside too!
  • C#/XNA/Mono
  • JavaScript/HTML5/WebGL
    • Make sure your game works in different browsers! At least Firefox and Chrome!
  • C/C++/Native
    • Make sure you included all the dlls and that these are right version!
    • Add links to redistributables: VS 2005, VS 2008, VS 2010
    • Use static linking if possible!
  • Ruby
    • Use OCRA to package your game into executable!
  • Game maker
  • Linux
    • Use ldd to pick and package correct libraries with your game!
  • Mac users
  • Read DO’s and DON’Ts list by Mathias Zarzecki!
  • “[…] Damn. I spent ages searching for such a place. Ah well. I’ll do it next time.” SUPERBAD!
    • Do it now! That’s what this guide is for!

McPixel – The Ludum Dare Story

Most of you know, but some of you don’t. Anyways, McPixel was created for Ludum Dare 21 in 48 hours. It had 6 levels and a very special ending. You can still play that version, and you can read how it became a fully featured crazy game!

Exactly one year ago, I quit my dayjob and went indie. Ok, perhaps it wasn’t as simple as that as I was looking for other jobs and creating a game in the mean time. This game was Thelemite and by now it has got over one million plays worldwide. But before I could manage to finish it, A WILD LUDUM DARE APPEARED!

That’s right! Right when I was running out of cash and had to finish my game ASAP, Ludum Dare 21 was taking place. And since I am a terrible compo addict, I could not let that pass, so naturally, I joined in! As I always do :)


As every other time, everyone was super excited to hear what the theme is. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1… and the theme is… 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable! Ludum Dare servers were literally crawling under the amount of visitors that time, but thanks to almighty Phil Hassey‘s mad web coding skills and Mike Kasprzak‘s ability to tame hoards of panicked developers, Ludum Dare 21 was a huge success, one that the compo had not seen before.

And it was a success for me too! I managed to create a tiny little pseudo point’n’click adventure called McPixel! I was trying to create a failproof idea, so I thought about a series of short point’n’click puzzles based on an even simpler engine that I can create within first 24 hours and spend the entire second half on creating more levels for it. I took out my favourite gel pen and started doodling my idea.


And I started working. As planned, I managed to create a working engine within first 24 hours, and went to sleep happy!

The first level I made was totally insane, because I was actually a bit late with my 24h mark, and I was up for too long and my brain experienced a shutdown so I just drawn animations mindlessly without having any idea what I am doing. The engine I created allowed my to create levels for it involving no coding, entirely in graphics editor, reducing chances to screw stuff up.

After I was done with my almost 20 hour stretch of first-day LD work, I took a juicy 4h nap and woke up with dysfunctional brain cells only to produce more mad levels.

I am really proud of careful planning I did that time and my simple engine allowed me to succeed in creating a whole of six levels in the end and a special ending.

After the compo, I quickly got back to finishing Thelemite and waited restlessly for the results. And the results were really great!

So I decided to make McPixel into a full game and set myself a goal of 100 levels!

After Ludum Dare McPixel, along other games got some press coverage that kept me motivated to work on it more. Here is a list of McPixel related links I managed to assemble after Ludum Dare 21.

I was crunching and creating more levels for McPixel having to occasionally release a side game in the mean time just to help me survive. The engine I created during Ludum Dare is 90% intact up to this day and I am very much proud of it. Now, McPixel is released. It is a full game with all of the 100 levels I wanted to make. I am really happy about releasing it and watching people have fun and go ‘wtf!’ when playing it is priceless. I am not writing this so that you can admire my ego or envy me. I want to motivate you! Making games is fun! And making games with friends is even more fun! And finally, making game swith friends in 48 hours is the best fun you can find in game making community. This is what Ludum Dare is. It is fun and friends and oppoturnities! Once you join it, you will never regret it.

October Challenge Hard Mode

Hey, remember when I said that McPixel is coming to Commodore 64? Well, it is!

And I’m going to use this month to make this happen! I am going to misinterpret the simple 3 points to my disadvantage! Here’s the plan!
