Sound and music

Well, I have sounds done now. I just need to figure out some music, maybe. Not sure exactly what I’m going to do.

And suddenly… I was finished

I submitted. And I’m exhausted. And yet I’m ready for more! 😀

Check my game out here: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=5267

It has sound effects but no music, no effects, and programmer art. But I’m happy with it, so that’s all that matters. :)

I plan to continue work on it, and release a post-compo version (or three).

Good luck to everyone. It was a great Ludum Dare!

Tiny Adventures In SPACE – Postmortem

So, where to begin? First off, I’m really glad (GLaD, even) that I got to participate with so many awesome people! You’re all great! 😀

I made the game Tiny Adventures In SPACE. It’s a pretty simple ‘avoid-em-up’, with very odd things floating about in space. Overall, the experience was amazing. :)

What went right:

  • I finished :p (always a good sign)
  • I was pretty happy with my game
  • My game includes bacon :p
  • My work area was good
  • I took breaks, and managed to get decent sleep
  • I had coffee :p
  • I had fun on IRC and Twitter
  • I. HAD. FUN!

What went wrong:

  • I couldn’t come up with an idea at first
  • My idea was slightly too complex
  • My game actually has a few (small) know bugs
  • I wasted time on IRC and Twitter
  • No music in the game
  • Not very polished game in general

All in all, a VERY good experience. I look forward to playing more of your games, and will definitely take part next time as well!

So next time concentrate on defining your idea well, prepare some rough ideas during the final theme voting round, and to quit checking your social media like a crack pipe get yourself on camera and concious of yourself while you work. Also, learn to add music and practice putting it into a game, no music is a deal-breaker.

Mini LD #34 – PixelBlip

I decided to go with 128×128 because it’s a square. Even on all sides. Handy.

PixelBlip is a little like Bit.Trip Core, except you can move around.

I only have a couple hours total to work on this. Hopefully I’ll finish! 😀

YAIIP

Yet Another “I’m In” Post.

This will be my fourth LD (both consecutive and total), and I’m really excited!

I fell away from game development for awhile, but I’m really glad to be back into it. :)

Here are my tools:

  • Flash + FlashPunk Yes, I’m using flash, not fancy-new HTML5 😉
  • FlashDevelop Possibly the best IDE ever
  • GraphicsGale / Gimp Both are great tools, and a common choice for game jammers it seems
  • sfxr / MilkyTracker For bleeps and bloops and music

Good luck, may the source be with you, and all that.

Flashpunk Template

I’ve created a quick, generic template for Flashpunk users. It consists of three .as source files:

  • Main.as
  • PlayWorld.as
  • Player.as

Nothing fancy, just sets up a world and a player with basic imports. I’ll be starting from this, and am declaring it here. Feel free to use/modify it as you see fit.

First progress report

All is well so far. I have the basic platforming down (with on bug), a way to load levels, and some idea of a story. I’m happy with my progress so far, and will probably work a bit more before sleeping.

Title and name

So I guess this means I have a name for my game. :) I’m not sure how many people will look at the prologue, but I’d rather have people not give up before getting to the actual game.

Story time!

So I started working on the cutscenes in the levels. They aren’t exactly cutscenes now, just text. However, there IS a crazy professor who more than makes up for it. :) I’ll show you that later.

After Lunch Update

After some pizza (the lunch of champions), I made some sound effects, which have now been added to the game. No screenshot here, because there has been no visual improvements. That will probably come last, when everything is is more or less working.

A new mechanic, a new screenshot

The first (and possibly last) ‘powerup’ in the game, the Posi-energy-inator:

This powerup will help you avoid negative energy.

Halftime report

Game Time Evolution is coming along nicely. I have:

  • basic gameplay
  • 3 levels
  • some variations of an enemy/obstacle
  • some sound effects
  • about half the graphics
  • a story

I still need  to do the rest of the art, finish putting the story into the game, more enemies/obstacles, music, and of course, more levels. I’m really excited for this game. 😀

Game Time Evolution

So yeah, I finished and submitted. Yes! I’ll be honest: This is the closest I’ve come to missing an LD deadline. I was fixing things down to the last minute.

As close as it was, I enjoyed it. I’ll do a postmortem soon, but for now why don’t you just play the game. A couple bugs slipped through, but they’re being fixed in the post-compo version, which will be continually updated. Go there for the newest version.

The October Challenge Begins!

And I’m in. I’ve been off-and-on working on a small avoider game in Haxe for the past week or so, and plan on taking it to success on the Google Play store. It’ll also probably be on Kongregate too, because, hey, cross platform.

Anyway, that’s my goal. Good luck to everyone who is participating!

Avoider is done!

Actually it was finished yesterday, but I’ve just submitted it to the site today.

Here’s the links if you just can’t wait: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/october-challenge-2012/?action=preview&uid=5267 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jacobwgames.avoider.Avoider

The game was made with Haxe + NME + HaxePunk, a great combo. I’m working on getting some other versions built. Specifically: Linux and Windows. Mac and iOS might come eventually.

Anyway, I’m really excited, and I’d appreciate it if you took a look at my game. :)

LD25

Oh yeah, I’m in!

I guess I should announce that right? 😉

This will be my fifth (consecutive and total) Ludum Dare, and I’m so excited! I’ve previously gone with Actionscript 3 and the incredible FlashPunk…but now I thinks it’s time to try something I have less experience with: Haxe. It’s similar in syntax to AS3, but has many differences. Combined with NME‘s powerful cross-platformness, and the HaxePunk game engine, there are few limits. I’ll be using FlashDevelop as my IDE. sfxr will make sounds. Caffeine will fuel my brain (sorry, I don’t have a link for either of those things). Other than that, who knows? :)

Good luck all, have fun, may the source be with you, and all that.

A couple hours in, going to sleep

early2Not much to look at, but there’s a lot going on underneath that programmer art. I’m going to sleep, then hopefully make combat *really* work well, then update the info display. And of course, make more monsters.
