EpiCat: He moves, He shoots

A cat in a spaceship. What more needs to be said?

End of day 1

So far so good. Before I get a couple hours of sleep, here is a new screenshot:

Good night and good luck everyone.

An official title!

My game is officially known as “EpiCat”. Why is it official just now? Because I started the title screen!

After-dinner update

I’ve gotten a lot farther since last night. The randomly appearing boss works, explosions work, I’ve tweaked a bunch of things, and had dinner! :)

MMMMMMMM. Check out that seafood.

More will come later. For now, I think I’ll take a quick break.

Half way in!

24 hours gone. Wow.

I managed to add collisions with the enemy ships themselves, and tweaked a few things since my last update post. No screenshot now, but many more more will come later.

EpiCat Postmortem

Well, I suppose I should do a postmortem! This will be short, don’t worry. 😉

I made a space shooter. Yes, I know, it doesn’t really incorporate the theme too much, but the player is alone against all the alien ships…

The Good:

  • It’s finished
  • I’m really happy with most of the art
  • It has sound effects
  • The gameplay is pretty solid, in my opinion
  • The game will keep going as long as you can

The Bad:

  • It has no background music
  • It could have used a little more polish
  • Some artwork isn’t very good

The Ugly:

  • Life got in the way of improving it
  • I slept a little too much

If you haven’t played it yet, you can check it out here: Clicky

I’ve been improving the graphics a little, and will add background music and more enemy types soon. Thanks for reading this postmortem. :)

EpiCat 1.1.0 Post-compo version

The title says it all. Before starting my SOPA/PIPA protest game, I decided to release a new version of EpiCat.

Play it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27464471/EpiCat/EpiCat-1.1.0.swf

It’s mostly art improvements, with some bug fixes, a new enemy, and gameplay balancing. Please let me know what you think!

Things still to do:

  • Add music
  • Add more enemies
  • (Maybe) Add a better intro to tell the story

[never played the original game, so I have nothing to compare it to, but here are my thoughts]

LD23

I’m totally in for LD 23!

Just under 10 days left, I’m overly excited! This will be my third time participating, not including miniLD 33.

I plan to use:

  • Flash and FlashPunk (for the code)
  • GraphicsGale (for the graphics)
  • Maybe sfxr (for the bleep bloops)
  • Coffee (for the sanity)

I’m not sure what kind of game I’ll be making. I do know that it won’t be another shooter! :p

EpiCat 1.2.0

For a little pre-warmup warmup, I decided to work on my LD #22 game a little.

Changes:

  • A new, devious enemy!
  • Scrolling background!
  • Improved instruction screen!
  • Fixed muting!
  • Enemies start appearing faster and things don’t get quite so crazy after awhile (balancing)!
  • Other fixes/improvements!

I would appreciate any bug sightings and feedback.

You can play it here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27464471/EpiCat/EpiCat-1.2.0.swf

Ideas and stuff

Those circles are planets

I didn’t like the chosen theme at first, but I think I’ve warmed to it a little.

My idea is this: A small creature from a small planet wants to explore space (that smallest circle is his). it will be a kind of “Avoid-em-up”. The screen you see is where you choose a planet to travel to.

All I have is that screen and basic movement and asteroid spawning.

A gameplay screen

I added a starfield and fixed some stuff. But now I’m tired and will try to get some sleep. See you all later!

Bacon! In the game!

Woohoo, bacon! I’m thinking about lots of food and other things to collect to increase your “interest” level. Not sure what that will do yet.

Now I want bacon…

More stuff, still no name

I need a name. Not sure what it’s going to be yet.

Anyway, here’s a new pic:

I’m getting there, slowly but surely.

Planets

I now have four planets done! I’m not sure how many more I’ll do, but I’m thinking six or so.

After Dinner

Irish beer stew tastes good. Who knew? :p

Anyway, I finally thought of a use for the “interest” mechanic: ship speed.

I also add the sixth (and last) planet. Now I think I might take a quick nap before more work.

23 hours left!

My game is mostly done. Because the last update didn’t have any, here’s a screenshot!I thought of a name too! “Tiny Adventures in Space”. I’m mostly done with this, then will come lots of polish.

Final day checklist

Today is going to be all about adding the ending “cutscreen”, and polish.

And, of course, sound and music. We’ll see how it goes.
