LD11 April 18–21, 2008

Yeah, that time again..

So, just to be sure nobody missed it, I posted my basecode some time ago (based on my last LD entry, cleaned up and improved along with some other projects, like http://atanua.org) – http://iki.fi/sol/zip/sol2dglbasecode20.zip – OpenGL + SDL, pretty basic stuff, except maybe for some IMGUI widgets which come handy.

I’d also like to remind folks (esp new folks or others who haven’t been able to finish an entry in some older LD) of my Ludum Dare survival guide: http://iki.fi/sol/ldsurvival.html – be warned that it’s quite serious, unlike some other survival guides you may encounter =)

The Introduction Thing

So I’m planning on entering LD for the first time. I’ve wanted to do this for a while, but awkward times (for those of us in New Zealand) have put a dampener on the last few. Not this time though!

I’m going to use C++ & OpenSceneGraph, and probably openAL for sound. My previous games were developed in VisualBasic & DirectX, so things may be a little interesting. Experience wise, I’m studying my final year of Engineering, and have been programming for ages. I rarely manage to finish anything I start, but with any luck I’ll contain feature creep enough to write something playable during the competition. LD11 here we come.

nice, another NZer

Ring.Insert(My.Hat)

I’m excited to have the chance to join this time. I’ve completely cleared the weekend and should be able to spend 100% of my weekend sleeping and gamedev-ing. Might even have a couple nights this week to do some warm-up!

This will be my second Ludum. Last time was a few back; I think the theme was Growth, so that would make it LD 7. I wasn’t able to finish that one because I got hopelessly mired in my graphics code. This time around I’m going to use IndieLib and be able to focus on game play. I really want to walk away from this experience with something visible and modestly fun. I’ve been working a long time on game development without something visible to show off. It’d be nice to finally get something out there I can point to with pride!

Good Luck,
Mr. Phil
Mr. Phil Games

Greetings

I just wanted to say hi, as a way of obligating myself to participation and not slacking off. I haven’t done LD before, although I have successfully participated in PyWeek a few times. I’ll probably use Python with Pyglet for my entry.

Also, what’s with all the people who hated on kittens on the first round of voting? That’s just mean.

Three times is the chram

Thats my moto for the upcomming competition. That and enthusiasm will have to push me up a steap hill, to finish the game. But for now, all i can do is vote and hope for a good theme.

Good luck to all

😀

LD11 and Fooood!

I, too, will be making somethign this weekend. Hopefully something good!

Also, my wife has already ‘thrown down’ in the food compo, having made a meal plan for the whole weekend.

hm.. with Lerc included, that’s at least 4 nzers… high LD’er per capita over there, impressive.

Ooh, Ludumdare, shiny

Yay! LD11!

Now I’m in a bit of a dilemma if you can help out…Pygame really eats upmy time coding so I don’t have loads of time, but I haven’t quite got to grips with pyglet, what should I use? Something I only half know how to use or not?

I tend to use this sort of competition as a way to either learn new APIs, or refresh my knowledge.

Hi, i always use pygame, but for this one i want to try pyglet, but i made a couple of tests re-writting some examples i have to pyglet and i am having performance problems (i am only drawing lots of cricles, and this drops down fps every time i draw a new one). I don’t know if i am doing something wrong in my openGl code…

Introductions, py2exe and cx_Freeze for the Linux-centric

Hello all … I’m a LD first-timer, intending to give it a shot this time around. I suspect I’ll only really get ~24 hours of actual LD-time, due to inconvenient timezones clashing with the “Day Job”(tm) … but I’m prepared to give it a red hot go. I’ll almost certainly be using Pygame (1.8) and Rabbyt (0.8.1) … unless for some reason the theme makes me want to write a text adventure :)

Since I typically develop on Linux, I’ve done some preparation by making sure I can actually produce Windows executables (the catch: still requires a Windows installation somewhere). My personal py2exe and cx_Freeze ‘tutorial’ is here … it’s actually painfully detailed for something that turned out much simpler than I expected. It would be great to compare notes on crossplatform Python/Pygame experiences/successes/pitfalls with any other Ludumdarers that code on Linux.

Hey! I use Python + PyGame too 😀

I’ll have a look at that link because I’ve been having some trouble packaging my programs into executables and that hasn’t been much help for the angry comments I’ve been getting from this LD. Also, I code on Linux too. Debian 7 specifically, with GNOME 3 as my display manger and Gedit as my text/code editor.

PoV’s LD11 Library

Again, I’m probably not going to officially enter this time. I’ve busily been working on a tool that’d be very helpful in rapid prototyping/Ludum Dare, but I’m almost 100% sure it wont be ready for use by Friday night.

But just in case, here’s the latest version of my C++ Library. All kinds of crap to be found inside, including:

  • Serialization library with compression, endian features, and MD5/SHA1 hash support.
  • Directory tree caching, stream framework.
  • Vector and Matrix math classes.
  • Point vs. Sphere, Rectangle, Polygon tests and analysis
  • Some string functions.
  • Whitespace delimited text file tokenizer.
  • Various Grid/Tile Map operations and analysis.
  • A couple functions for drawing Allegro geometry transformed by a Matrix.
  • The “useful” headers & source files from boost, BZip, LZMA, MD5, SHA1, ZLib
  • Extra crap that I’ve just not got around to refactoring yet.

Hi

This is my first game competition. I plan on using pygame, blender, imagemagick, reason, and audacity.

ImageMagick to create content, or during runtime? I found it impossible to come up with a scheme to easily distribute ImageMagick along with your game during the last 48 hours :)

Introduction of nfirvine

Hi kids,

I’m nfirvine.  I haven’t really done one of these before, but whe I saw that it was this weekend, I got really excited.  So here we go.  We’ll see if I actually submit anything or not.

By the way, there’s a couple of custom libraries I might be using.  Check out the index at http://www.nfirvine.com/wiki/projects . The only one I’ve got up at the moment is some binding for Python that allow you to use multiple mice.

Likely Entering

Hi all,

I’m not exactly new to LD, but it’s been quite a while. I’m planning to enter LD11, and I have some interesting ideas up my sleeve :) I’ll be writing all my code completely from scratch, using Win32 -I have a lot of experience doing this though, so I don’t think it’ll be a handicap.

I’ll also be recording a time lapse video of my progress, which might be amusing to watch afterwards – Good luck everyone (you’re going to need it :P)

Here we go

Well, I’m here and ready to go. 48 hours seems like a VERY small amount of time, especially since coming off of pyweek earlier this month. This will be my first LD, and I’m quite excited.

I was looking over the food journals from last year, and all you people that have waffles and muffins and whatnot made for you by signifant others are jerks. My girlfriend won’t have anything to do with that kind of thing. If I don’t go shopping in the next two days it’s going to be a frosted mini-wheats filled journal for me…

Well, I should be on the list now that I have a post.  Good luck everyone!
