Snowman collector!

Added score and enemy movement. if I now add a time limit it will be a game you can play from start to finish.Screenshot from 2014-12-07 14:29:50

Progress on my game I began 14 hours ago.

At first, I livestreamed it, but that caused my laptop to really waste energy, and slow down. So I’ll be entering the jam instead, which gives me more time to do things.

I’ve only added level 2 out of 5 so far, but hopefully when I’m done with that and music, I’ll be able to sweeteb up the art style! XDLD Menu

My 2nd Night Working on my Rhythm Game

ld_31_2nd_night

So today I accomplished making a small bit of music. My game is a runner (with levels, (eventually)), it’s like a rhythm game. Made clouds that bounce to the beat, and changed the color of things to the beat as well. I’m currently working on my first level, hard coding when to jump, landings, and collectibles in the right places to fit in with the music. I hope I can get out a level or two for tomorrow. I’m calling my game, Moving Melody. It’s so fun working on this with music too.

World Complete

I set out to make a Metroidvania style game that would fit entirely on one screen, and I’ve finally finished creating the world! Here are some screenshots from the game (click to view them at full size):

SS1

SS2

And here’s a gif [3mb].

I still have to add audio, some scenery, and lots of polish.

Colorful and tipsy

S6

I made a lot of progress. I managed to fix 2 big bugs (They were about 10 lines of code away from each other) and made some more levels, sound effects and a mute button. And also made difficulty increasing.

Now I only need a finish screen and some more levels! That went quite fast.

I have the battle engine finished!!!! \o/

Graphics almost done!

I’ve done most of the game graphics and also some background music, but there is just 8 hours till the end! Now it’s time to make the environment interactive. If everythings go allright, I will create GUI and the needs of main character after that.

sunday morning update

8am, sunday

Just the barest skeleton of a game is there. Ended up spending longer yesterday than I intended, just got carried away in the fun. Got off track ratholing a few things but nothing serious. Gunna try to wrap things up here pretty quickly and get on with the day.

officially cut: sprites (squares ftw!), sound, animation (RIP, animation brings so much to a game).

enemies

They rush to the player.

this is my second go at this Ludum Dare, the first game was a little too ambitious so I ended up scraping it about 10 hours in. It looked something like this

I’m Out.

Scripting issues, lack of energy, enraged. I’ll come back next time, but for now, good luck to the others!

Oh man, sorry to hear that. :( Sometimes this happens… Good luck next time o/

Im out.

Was trying to make a winter themed platformer on one screen, but I don’t have the time to finish it (physics test tomorrow). Therefore I’m out (Yes I give up :'( ).

It just feels pointless spending time on this when all it is going to result in is the possibility of having a jumping snowman, with no aim or goal in any way.

Also I am bad at creating levels. Next time I’ll stick to randomly generated ones. Much easier.

Hopefully I will have more time next time to actually finish.

What I had so far.

What I had so far.

I’m Out.

Couldn’t find an idea that I liked enough to pursue. Additionally my mind is not in the game this weekend. So it is time to affirm that I’m out for good. Good luck to current participants, we will be cheering for you!

Update #2 The enemy

Hey guys, Im back with another update

This time I have an enemy to share with you, This guy or gal is what wants to kill you! you job is to kill it though he wont be alone.

Progress report:

– Level design = Done

– Enemy(s) = Done

– Player systems = Done

– Menu = ToDo

– Fine tuning = Todo(If there is time)

– Finish level props = Todo

Here’s some eye candy… Its a GIF

Speedcoding!

I’ve had better LD’s. I just realize, that my code is awefull in some parts, and if I want to finish this game, I can’t make it pretty.

The idea is terrible. I didn’t really have a good idea(like the last time), but it fits the theme. I should’ve combined this theme with another.

I’m making a “bomberman” spin-off. But what’s on the screen is all you get. No magical thinggys comming out of crates. But bombs do out of no-where when you press space… items randomly duplicate themselves…?
See, it doesn’t match anything.

Now I am programming AI. Or should I say: typing words at 400 hpm. Why? Because it’s the only way I can finish this, and: less fun game < no game

Confused AI snowman approves:

it

Well this is a first :P

For the first time ever my LD has gone extremely well – I have a few hours of leisurely polishing before the end and I plan to make them count 😉

Probably the reason things went so well is that there are literally no sprites in the game, so that chunk of time could be used for music and programming instead.

Despite the lack of graphics assets I think the game looks pretty nifty though!

Teased? ;)

Another GIF after the “more” 😉

I mentioned before my spending a lot of time getting the lighting and day-night cycle working. Here’s what it looked like about half-way through the jam:

I’ve linked from the game page to itch.io as I know thing will start getting crazy soon.

Playable Link – Could Use Feedback – After 2 All-Nighters, I Can’t Tell!

This has been so much more brutal than my other 2 LDs.

I stayed up until 8am both nights because I had this jumble of game parts and a center, but it wasn’t coming together.  Then I finally saw what the game wanted to be…  it was so much further from my initial concept than either of my other LD entries.  I was very worried until I saw the proper scope finally at 11pm Saturday.  I commented out the jetpack and the guns, and now I have something that really surprised me because I never would have designed it.

If anyone spares a minute to try it out, I could use feedback.  I’m so fried I have zero clue if it’s fun, too weird, too confusing, too hard, too easy, or what.

You move with WASD, the rest should be discoverable by experimenting:

http://ricefrog.com/LD31/rotorena.html Sound is what it most needs, and light in-game instruction.  That’s tomorrow, though, I’m going to bed.  Hope I don’t sleep through submission time. Good luck to everyone!

That’s great! As you say it needs a little bit of instruction as to what the goals are, but it was actually pretty fun to play. I can see how it would be hard to play if you were dead tired though :)

I Might Actualy Finish

Finally it looks like I might finish, except for a few all of the bugs and the strange balancing  the game is playable. I still need to to sound and a bit more UI but i think i have enough time to do it. Here is a picture from the game, there isn’t much happening because i haven’t played very far into it as its a city builder.

2

Hope your all doing well with your games.

that’s it for me for this weekend

Again, this is NOT the weekend I’m doing this, due to pikkojoulut damage _and_ what I have to do now: bring a bunch of servers back online after their unfortunate “going dark” episode a while back, and subsequent damage to the filesystems.  That’s been ongoing the past week.

What I have now is a nice library for color management, which I found here:  http://sputnik.freewisdom.org/lib/colors/  which I’ll likely do some fiddling with in the coming week as I have time, then I’ll use it for generation of stuff next weekend.  Along with that, in the coming week, I may make this idea I started on (and didn’t get to) into a sort of rendering library for myself this coming weekend, where I can actually make the GAME part.

So, overall, much more success than expected – as I expected “nothing.”

Also, my “let’s not look at the themes” and subsequent lack of dissapointment is a good thing, I shall do that again, I think, next LD.  If it isn’t the same time as 7DX 15 (:

And now – server restoration! (actually just tons of installations.)

Milestone 5

http://ludum.tarshish.us/ld31/

After some early morning work, I have a nearly complete product.  I only have to add the winning condition, then after that is polish and content.  So now I have also uploaded it to a site for testing. Enjoy!

  1. Add click events to each area
  2. Add a clock
  3. Add $ earned so far
  4. Add messages as things happen
  5. Implement the mailbox
  6. Implement the table
  7. Implement the kitchen
  8. Implement the bed
  9. Have contests win and get things
  10. Implement the bathroom (?)
  11. Implement the couch (?)
  12. Implement the dresser (?)

  14. Polish
  15. Improve the messages UX
  16. Add person status bars(?)

Here’s a typo I spotted: On day 1, when you click on the couch, it says “The couch is not tha comfortable”. You’re welcome :).

I’m out

Well, thats it. I failed. I would have enough time time left to do something a bit different but noone likes to play games made in 6 hours. I wanted to make an esacpe-the-room-style game in one screen using photos for everything but the photos did work out the right way. Point and Click is not the usual type of game I do anyway. Additionally I didnt do as much for Ludum Dare this weekend as I wanted. I think the Jam is better suited for me since if their is no teamm for which I NEED to make a game, I wont finish anything. Nevertheless I hope to participate in the next Ludum Dare. Congartulition for everyone who finished his/her game.

Be there next time! Thats totally fine. I have skipped the last 4 ones too. Good luck!

God I want to finish thing so bad

Well. Im tired as hell. running on fumes but all the features are in place.

Im going to build some levels. A 2 option menu (with escape and play) and try to put ambient music on the background. after that im going to drink half a bottle of wine and drop myself into my bedbed.

Been a fun one. Game will be uploaded later ;)

Core Logic is Done!

I’ve just finished the main logic of my game! There’s snowman throwing snowballs, lumberjacks, rabbits, carrots to collect and put to a Christmas tree.

Next steps are to polish everything, add animations to all characters, add music and sounds, splash screen and tutorial, sparkles and particles.

Out.

I had an awesome idea but it looks like it’ll take me more than 48 hours to complete, plus I haven’t been feeling too great anyway. So I’m not going to make it for the compo. Ah well.

Have this unfinished Wind Waker-style song (.it source) I was making for the compo.

You’re free to do whatever you like with it (Public Domain). The samples used are from free sample packs made by the Philharmonia and Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra.

Last day!

I guess I shouldn’t have slept for as long as i did… But still, I’ve build the whole core system, except the shop. It’s all about adding different element now and maybe a little story too.

I hate how it look just like it did yesterday. Like I haven’t worked on it at all -.-

Technically halfway there…

Previously, in The Strictest Conservation of Everything: (quick recap) I’m making a game that neither creates anything nor destroys anything, to conserve exactly what’s in the screen. To that end, I’m making 6 characters that all do different attacks with boxes flying and lying around the arena, Bubble Bobble style, kind of.

I’ve made three of them! So technically, I’m halfway there… Technically.

Say hi to Stompy:

Block_Party_characters_gif_stompy

Stompy is the fastest “faller” in the game – well, that’s his attack. No, he doesn’t do much with blocks. Sorry.

Next, introducing Punch:

Block_Party_characters_gif_puncher

Punch is a bit of a surprise guy, his attacks can go through a barrage of boxes, but he can’t actually punch anyone in the face due to a psychological condition that he would rather not talk about.

And thirdly, say hi to Tosser

Block_Party_characters_gif_tosser

Tosser tosses. That’s his style. Straight forward to a degree and potentially self-lethal.

OK three more characters to go… And then MORE JUIICE and then SOUND and then OH GODS NO TIME

Skull and Crossbones: Update #1

Skull and Crossbones is coming along well, the basic engine is place, along with most of the mechanics that I’ll need. Sound/music assets are in place, visual effects still need a little work though. The primary challenge now is going to be scripting a reasonably intelligent AI for the British Navy ships. Currently they just approach you and wait for you to pepper them with cannons. This would be fine, except cannonballs are a persistent resource, and when they hit ships they slow down – slow down enough and they can be picked up. Eventually it gets to the point where the Navy ships possess all the cannonballs (until a powerup floats in) but refuse to fire them.

Development is still live-streaming at http://www.twitch.tv/glenugie

Skull and Crossbones Update #1

Team Swabbur: Some new updates :D

Hello everyone!

Today we finished our first Alpha version of the game! Some screenshots are included at the end of the post. Everything seems to be working fine, except when suing other resolutions, When the resolutions change all the images get blurry and weird grey lines appear on the screen. The whole game is written in C++ the images are all .PNG’s. IF there is anybody who would like to help me out, that would be really nice!

Untitled

Bye!

First gif

This is probably the most difficult ludum dare I’ve had. First, it was my first time using unity in a game jam and second, I’ve added AI to the mechanics which I had never thought how time consuming it was. I added a* pathfinding and a stack command system for the npcs.

My thoughts about Unity

I love how I am not tinkering with the low level stuff anymore like memory and null pointers because my past two games were all done in SFML/C++. I was spending more time with the game mechanics this time. But don’t get me wrong, I had lots of fun with SFML/C++ as well.

For example, I miss how I can easily put a breakpoint then step and continue in xcode. But I think that can be done in MonoDevelop? I’m using SublimeText so I don’t know, but anyway I went fine without any breakpoints.

What really saved me some time in unity are the scenes. I remember spending too much time writing the deconstructors when doing the GameOver routine. I need to release the memory So I may restart playing the game again. And I always suck at releasing memory in C++.

Thanks! dysoco, I know I should have put more effort in learning smart pointers. I remember studying and practicing their syntax. But from what I remember, the most problematic part for me was when these smart pointers were used in a container like std::vector and I tried to release these pointers within the game loop and the game was still running. so that’s where the null pointer comes from for me.

You can do stepping with mono develop – you have to attach it to the running unity process first. Mono Develop sucks baawwwls though.

Update #1 (finally)

Finally a layout that makes sense.
Finally found a good story.
Finally a screenshot to share! 😀

Yes, the “screen” that the game is centred around is the one from the terminal to the left.
And yes, that ugly thing standing in the hall is a snowman. 😀

Good luck, everyone, in your ludological endeavours!

a little over 36 hours in…

and I’m just now reaching the point of being fully playable with win/loss conditions. (Wasted a few hours hunting for infinite loops, grumble grumble…)

anyways, here are some progress shots of the game so far:

Focus!

I’ve found that the limiting factor for me is not, surprisingly, time. Rather, it’s focus. The mistakes start to pile up, and the desire to perfect the details that need perfecting diminishes. Fortunately, I am still on track for finishing! But the next time I do this, I probably won’t shave as much time from my sleep budget.

Good luck to all in the last half day! Here’s a brief preview of how things are shaping up for me:

Power-ups

Ld31

I added new power-ups, inbetweening, better collisions, healing system and more!
I had to rewrite big part of game, but now it’s much easier to add new stuff 😉
And probably today my friend will join to me 😉

Now i have to focus on animations, graphics , sounds and what is most important – new types of enemies and bosses.

There is current version 😉

My game is too hard! =P

This is what my little memory game currently looks like, it has pretty much all the gameplay logic in it, although it’s very hard at the moment, So I’m going to work on making an easy and medium mode next.

Other than that, I think I’m nearly there, just needs to polishing =)

what do you guys think of the graphical style? I’m not sure about the tile & buttons colors.

Some finishing touches…

Adding some small props to make the game feel more complete and to make up for the AI as some of you will soon see…

Capture2

Less Than 12hrs

Well less than 12 hrs to go and i have not spent enough time coding, sleeping, arting and sounding but if anything the game works.

I wasn’t even sure if i was going to participate 36 hrs ago but i decided i would at least try to get a game done even i i didn’t finish, and here i am almost finished.

And of course since it is 1.30am why not post this.

Now its polish time.

I DID IT! MY FIRST LUDUM DARE I DID IT!

For some reason the “add media” button isn’t showing up, so I’ll just link the picture I’d usually post https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/71895074/Screenshot%202014-12-07%2014.20.02.png

I completed my first Ludum Dare game today after about 12 hours of development time. The title of the game is “Take out the Trash In Space.” You are a spaceship and must get rid of garbage blocks by matching 3 in a row.

There are a few glitches here and there (mostly consisting of the “was that block supposed to disappear?” variety), but it’s essentially playable.

You can play it here. http://gamejolt.com/games/puzzle/take-out-the-trash-in-space/41042/

Oh Wow. 6 Hours of work. Core Game is Done.

I only managed to start at 8am this morning and it’s now 3pm. About 6 hours of solid work has brought my game into a mostly done game (it’s not that complex). I call it UpgradeZero, I don’t know why, I just like the name. The art is dreadful and there is no sound but it works. Enemies spawn, sort of follow you, and now (finally the player can die! A few hours left. I think this will be my best entry yet (despite the even more severe time limits)

Progress update

Hey!

This is my first progress update since I was kinda busy building content for the game.

The game now features 4 spells, 4 different enemy types, 9 upgrades and I think its so much fun to play.

Recently I added icons for the spells and now I hope I can add some models for the enemies instead of capsules.

Dancefloor – Done and Submitted

splash432x200

Our game Dancefloor, a bullet hell style game in a single screen is now available for download from here. Please vote and leave feedback!

Development of the game went smoothly. This idea was the first thing that came to mind when I drowsily saw the theme.

My buddy Alfred (@veryafe) came over around lunch and in a few hours we had the basic gameplay. Starting to know my way around Unity at this point, not a lot of trouble in that department. A couple of badly timed unity-editor freezes coupled with poor saving habits set us back a little, however nothing really major.

The only real work on day 2 (today) was adding sounds and a title screen.

Felt really good to collaborate on this very simple design, get it done in really just a few hours and be reasonably satisfied with the result.

Anyway… Play and post your highscores below. Ours is 154 😀

Thanks in advance!

BUG: Babies can’t shit

My current bug list.

Screenshot from 2014-12-07 14:58:52

I’m also thinking of changing the name from Matriline to Single Mother Desert Island Simulator, or something like that.

It’s going fairly well now I think. The main thing I still need to add is the animals, giraffes and hyenas. I think I’ll leave birds and monkeys out. Giraffes eat apples from the trees and can be shooed away. Fences will keep them out too, but they will damage and eventually break down the fence. Hyenas are attracted by corpses and will attack you and the old women. Clearly they are very dangerous. You need to bury your dead to stop the hyenas and generally keep away from them while they are around since you can’t fight them. Monkeys and birds were only ever intended to be fruit eaters, but harder to keep out, so I don’t think it’s that bad not to have them.

Big things left to do are music and sound effects and a better introduction / tutorial system. These will sadly be last on the list, but hopefully will get done too.

Almost Done!

We are making progress

Some hours left and we are in the middle of a coding rush. Working hard to build a playable game. We can’t use the full 48 Hours (damn time shift and other “constraints”), but we are confident to bring this puppy to an end.

Done! May the Takeover begin!

Wheewww, I’m done with my game! … my second one, actually. The first idea I had was a lot better than this one, but I ran out of story ideas very quickly so I had to use my backup idea.

Takeover is a tower defense game, and yeah, that’s pretty lame, but I’m still happy I finished something at all – I wasted a full day with the other game. And even though the idea of a tower defense game is boring, I actually like the result quite a bit.

Enough talkin’, have a look at what I’m responsible for: Takeover

As I wont be able to work more than ~6h tomorrow Ive been trying to finish up and I will soon begin working on the bugfixing, ui, sfx, music, main menu(play, options, credits, exit) and if time allows me I might add some more traps.Check other post for more info.

My body wants to sleep, but I must continue

Progress so far!! Doing art now!!

Screenshot LD31 - 3

Gameplay is good enough (I want to add more gameplay content, but the time…).

ToDo List:

  • Art: Ending player animations, some sprites and title, credits and a bigger font
  • Audio: In wait.
  • Music: In wait.
  • Polish: Wishlist.

I didn’t sleep this night, so I’m tired. But I have to continue.

Remember, sleepless code is bad code!

Take a nap, it’ll improve your thinking capabilities.

Princess and Macho Enemies are in!

Finally getting some art assets created and into the game. Things I need to still accomplish is:

Background / Foreground Assets

Menu Screen, Credit Screen

Balancing! -Shield, Enemy Damage, UI?

(O M G gonna be a tough cookie to balance this)

Anyhow imma sign off for today. I wish you the best ludumdarians!, Can’t wait to see your games in the upcoming days!

Kitch’s Update

Finishing up.  Just tweaking some vars and adding a bit of polish.

Even has a name, “Beat, Bop, Delicious!”

bbdTitleBig

Its a sort of hectic button pushing / knob turning / slider sliding game.  Little different than anything I’ve done so far, both in gameplay, and the fact that it can be played on the web.

bbd_play

Now just to finish up, and work on some items for my submission.  Then a nap… a long nap..

Title screen done.

It’s so hard to think what to do with so small pixel character. I guess putting some humanized form – to anime would be nice.

P/s: Im having trouble uploading this, something wrong with the server?

Progress

Our artist Peter did did some character artwork for Banana-TV 😀

The Family

After one and a half day, I’m giving up

“The Return Of The Snowman Colossus” is unfortunately nothing you can play tomorrow :/

Neither it’s because of the theme (I liked it, and I planned a plot twist toward it) nor is it because of wrong tools, falsey time management, or something like that.

Unfortunately, I got a headache and felt dizzy.
I went to sleep for a couple of hours during afternoon (it’s 4pm here), but my body and my mind are telling me, that I have to stop now :/

My last broadcasts on twitch: http://www.twitch.tv/snooze82/profile/past_broadcasts
The code on github (Javascript, WebGL/Three.JS): https://github.com/fourty2/LD31

See you next time and good luck to everyone who is still sitting in front of his/hers computer 😀

It’s never too late. Go finish it even if it’s not perfect, you’ve still gots lots of time, that way you can atleast vote!

I haven’t been able to join yet, but thinking of joing up right about now and just making something tiny, so go!

Screenshots like a bit ambitious tho :)

Screenshottie!

We’re slowly getting there. All the main features are in place, and it’s time to polish and add new (crazy) stuff!

Holy progress batman!

Second day has started and some progress has been made (a lot slower than yesterday).

My game needs a win condition and probably at least one more type of enemy. Any suggestions and feedback is welcome!

Playable Unity web player version here! Gameplay video here!

Still streaming (very lonely :P) at http://www.twitch.tv/absoa.

Hey so I just played your game and it was a lot of fun. I really love the concept and the music!

Done… Whew…

After 8 mugs of coffee, 35 hours without sleep, and 2 hours of porting to Android I am finally done!

Feeling good about myself.
Now just have to wait for it to upload…

My Progress (4)

Hi! Although you can’t see it, the management of the game events is done. An event in my game will be, for example, replace/create/delete a group of cubes on the map.

I also added switches to throw events and the swinging of the ground. But there’s still too much work to do!

Wow man that ground “shake” looks great!

Getting somewhere!

After a lot of banging my head against the wall about some central gameplay, I finally decided to settle down and just get something out there. The gameplay’s been evolving as I’m working on it, but I wanted to step back and think about it some more, so I took a break and made a short little audio loop for the background. Hopefully it’s not too annoying! What do you guys think?

Haha, banging your head against the wall sounds familiar!

Finally done!

Yep, I’m done. After around 12 hours of dev time due to school, I have no more time this weekend and so have drawn it to a close, with a bit of a clumsy win condition. But hope people enjoy it!

Done!

About 17 hours overall. Very simple and minimalist game but I simply have no energy and resources for more. Now it’s time to play some :)

Who Likes Blood?

This game just officially became very silly. Go try it here.

Progress is being made, gentlemen

More engine bits, plus new parts

It took forever getting these done, as MMF2 is pretty horrible when it comes to fine tuning motion and stuff. Time to implement more parts, then finalize the SECRET, SUPER COOL aspect of the game.

Final Stretch

Stopped for a couple hours for lunch and to put the Xmas tree up. Still have several graphics to put together, but im making good time, should all be done in the next 6 hours or so. Home stretch!

Almost Done

As we close in on the final 10 hours I can safely say I will finish on time.  Looking forward to all the feedback.  All I have to do is add my 2 win conditions and I’ll submit.

Enough!

Really fun Ludum Dare this time, but I finished early to get some non-computer stuff done before work tomorrow.

Already a lot of really good entries! Really looking forward to some fun weeks with voting.

First build

First build of the game (and first Ludum Dare too !), there’s still a lot to do and I’m starting to worry it might not be finished in time for the compo.
