Reviewing YOUR games on stream - PART 2!

I need to review more games, so I'll be playing through people's Jam / Compo entries on my Twitch again! :sparkles: I’ll critique them live and then rate & comment on them after the stream. I'll be playing the games of people in chat, so come post yours at https://twitch.tv/Aurailus! I'll be prioritizing reviewing games from people that have reviewed mine. :heart:

Bug Fix for HOTARU

What's changed? 1) Fixed the collision isuue 2) Removed the Left Mouse Button Click System 3) Some other minor issues fixed

Check out the new Version (0.5) : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/hotaru-guider-of-souls

How much milk and eggs can you deliver?

Try out our web based game! Deliver as much as you can, and don't crash the trucks!

Things we have learned from previous jams: - Keep the scope down - Make the whole game loop ready as early as possible to have time to design levels - Start programming as early as possible, better to quickly prototyping than planning too much - Always make a web build so everyone can try your game

Hazard Saviour - Post Jam Breakdown

Title.png As usual I'd thought I'd do my quick post jam break down of my game for LDjam 53.

Dawn of the First Day

character.png

As tradition, I didn't quite like the theme Delivery, so the beginning of the jam I kind of took it slow. I wasn't really feeling it and I honestly thought I would drop out after working somewhat slower and lacklustre than I usually do.

Saying that, I did straight away prototype a "Crazy Taxi" kind of game where you pick up and drop off passengers around a world. The original concept was 3 smaller worlds where you would fight through enemies, earn cash and upgrade your character. You'd unlock a new level once you hit a certain credit amount or drops.

So the first day really consisted of designing the gameplay, making weapons, creating a few enemies and just getting the main base down. However due to my somewhat laziness on this first day, this ended up spilling over into day 2.

passengers.png

Dawn of the Second Day

So the second day was upon me, after getting quite a bit of sleep (10 hours, which is unusual for me during a LDjam) I set down to finish the main base of the game. During this period I set to designing the passengers, level graphics, area gimmicks and some of the music for the game.

biomeemforest.pngbiome/emaqua.pngbiomeemlava.pngbiome/emtemple.pngbiome_factory.png ( The areas/biomes of the world, Forest, Aquatic, Magma, Temple and Factory.)

It was at this point where my decision of actually sleeping and taking it a little more relax came to bite me in the backside. I knew at this point I wouldn't be able to make three different levels with a decent size, so I began cramming it all into one massive level. The knock on effect this had is that a lot of the code was based on smaller size stages, so the direction arrow became a bit wonky at finding the best path :/ Sadly at this point it was too late to really edit it and fix it. I also thought I would have enough time to add a couple of a bosses that would allow a "warp" point between both ends of the world, but again due to lack of time I had to scrap this idea, even though I add most of the code to make this work!

In hindsight I should of shrank the world down and knocked off an area. This would of given me a little more time for extra polish, stopped the player from getting a little more lost than I intended and also given me more time to add in music tracks for each of the areas.

enemies.png

Dawn of the Final Day This time I hardly slept, this was because I had the huge task of actually plotting out the world and making sure it all worked. For the next 20 hours I was building the main world, editing the menus, adding in a shop and doing the main bulk of the world.

weps.png

It was at this point I knew why in the past I never really sleep during game jams! Although in my older age I know that my body can't quite take that sort of punishment anymore! (I'm still feeling it now!) I honestly thought I wouldn't get it finished but luckily I finished it in the nick of time, even though I had to cut out a few things and I didn't get the polish that I usually do. I had to for-go unique tracks for each of the areas and a snazzy intro art.

But it's done. I'm not super happy with this one but still, it's better than I used to do back when I first started.

Next time I'll try and give it a little more, but damn I'm getting to old for that haha.

We are SO CLOSE!! :D

My subbmission for this game jam has almost 20 ratings :smile:. I just need 6 more!

So I hope for as many people to play and rate my first game jam game :D. I really want to be scored on this game jam and I am so close just because of 14 legends who have rated my game so far!

The Games called Oshumania Heres the link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/oshumania

Another small thing, Im pretty confused on the new "Smart" ordering system where, to encourage rating other games, you get "Coolness Points" for the more games you rate, and if you rate other games your game is placed higher up in the rating page. However, i have rated many other games but I still have a very low, negative smart score. Heres a screenshot where it shows the smart score: Screenshot 2023-05-03 at 18.09.17 2.png

If anyone know whats happening please help me out.

Anyways thank you to anyone who is going to or has already rated my game, I really appreciate it :slight_smile:.

P.S. I know and have tried to fix this problem where in the game any text is way to small to read because of the size restrictions that are in place when you upload a web imbedment in the Ludum Dare Website. I was going to upload a version with a bigger text size but I have unfortunately edited the original project already with some significant changes so I can not update or add an .exe version which will fix these issues without breaking game jam rules as the project has been changed significantly after the game jam ends. Sorry for any inconveniencies beforehand.

Heres a few in-game pics of my jam subbmission: Screenshot 2023-05-01 at 20.47.39.png

A quick reminder that Microsoft Paint is a valid tool, even for creating games!

Hey all, I’m Sodoj and I made Commutator, a snake game you can play in your Microsoft Paint window!

ezgif-2-0d53a7e078.gif

One of the reasons I decided to do this game is that I unironically love using Microsoft Paint! While it is very limiting compared to contemporary drawing software like Krita and Photoshop, working around those limitations is extremely fulfilling and every drawing feels much more meaningful!

Here's one drawing I managed to conjure up in Paint. The guy's lantern isn't shining all that bright so maybe you could help him light it up. Who knows, there might be something hidden in the darkness:

illuminate.png

Using Paint as a drawing tool is one thing, but using it for game creation is even bigger challenge. In fact, this is not my first time using Paint in game development, my entry for Ludum Dare 50, Darko, had all of its 2D assets drawn in Paint. Organizing texture atlases and making their backgrounds transparent was a pain and a half, but I think it was worth it, mostly because I had so much fun doing the assets!

4d534.gif

Making the entire game revolve around MSPaint window was much more tricky. To my knowledge, there isn't really a way to render an image to MSPaint canvas and all of that fancy stuff, there's only stuff that make MSPaint MSPaint: brushes that you use with the mouse, canvas size, colors and the fact that it's on every Windows 10 OS. Not may compelling games you could make with that toolset, some might say not at all, but with some creative thinking everything is possible.

585c6.gif

These days I'll be going more in depth about how I managed to make this game. What I want you to take from this post, if anything, is no matter what tools you use, there's a potential in all of them to make something incredible!

If you want to try out Commutator, you can find it here .

Nice surprise

The whole team was watching our game on the streamer. Someone had to run quickly to the computer when a message came on the general chat. We were able to have a little chat with Rincs online.

Ariadne's Thread Delivery is not too hard. Or is it?

There is a discussion about the Ariadne's Thread Delivery controls being too hard to complete the game. Honestly, I've done my best to keep player confused with the truck movements and keep him hitting the walls. Maybe I went too far with this. How do you think?

Check out my game!

Pretty happy with how this one turned out, though as always, there is loads more I wish I could've added.

Feedback I've received so far has already given me some ideas for how to improve it, think I might work on it some more and see where it goes...

Can I Update My Game?

Specifically I would like to know if it would be complying with the rules, and in 'good taste', to make some changes to the graphical scaling of my game. From the feedback I've received from others it has become apparent that although 640x480 is a plenty fine resolution for me while playing on a 1366x768 laptop screen, it can be far too small for others running at other resolutions. The changes that need to be done to rectify this are: 1. In source, I need to switch to relative positions for the ui elements, as well as tweak their font sizes and margins to improve readability. 2. Tweak my css to have the games canvas fill its iframe. 3. Have the itch upload use a larger default resolution, and enable the fullscreen toggle.

Would it be acceptable to make the above changes to my submission or should I make these changes on a separate upload/wait until voting is over. The way I see it, the above changes wouldn't normally need to be justified if I needed to tweak things for porting to another platform, But I am unclear where things stand when making these changes to an existing port.

These fine faces are out to get you!

Come try out our coop 2d beat-em-up where all of the enemies (and four playable characters!) are ourselves green-screened into a destroyed world. Do you really want My Way to show you who's boss?

The Box Baby Post-Jam Bug Fixes !

We are happy to annouce that our game The Box Baby is now mostly bug-free ! :tada:

We made a quick post-jam update to fix the last remaining bugs.

One of them was a nasty one, breaking all of our in-game dialogs, for a game like ours that is based around dialogs it was very nasty... But luckily it's gone and you can enjoy our fun, unexpected and disconcerting dialogs :smiley:

searching for LD games

The LD site has some great ways to find games to rate with the smart filter to find jammers who are doing a good job of rating/feedbacking others and need some rating or the danger filter to find games that are close to the minimum 20 ratings needed.

If you are looking for LD53 web games to play, you can use itch searching for those who uploaded with itch.

I would also recommend to those who upload on itch to fill out all the options for the entry.

Use the ludum-dare-53 tag and link back to the LD site: lditch01.png

You can also add information in the Metadata section to call out things like input methods and any accessibility option your game has. lditch02.png

I would love to find more LD games that are playable on phone.

Also a lot of people asking about postjam updates (no joking, I'm very surprised), and I can tell that for now we don't have much plans (though mb something would appear). For now we are working on our previous Jam game full rework and Steam release and if you liked wasteland express, you may want to follow me or anyone from the team for future update. Also I have an empty twitter account where I would post anything important about our game dev work which you can also follow here: https://twitter.com/yogurtthehorse

Maybe I would start YouTube career and make a devlog video, though, hehe

Thanks everyone who played our game and commented with feedback, this is very cool and means a lot <3

【Sunset Delivery】

Hi there! I just fixed some of our major bugs / issues, and uploaded a bugfixed version of Sunset Delivery!

Our goal with the game was to capture the vibe of vaporwave driving gifs and turn it into a short playable experience. It's pretty short (less than 3 min), so if you haven't tried out our game yet, would love to invite you to check it out :)

If you leave a comment, I'll be sure to get around to playing and rating your game as well!

I finished my first game!

I'm so proud, because my goal was to just finish it, and I did it!

Had a great start on Saturday as I got the idea pinned down within ca 30 mins (and I stuck to it). Apart from that I had only ca 10 hours to spend on Saturday-Monday, and so I accepted that I'd miss the deadline for Jam... and worked on Tues-Wed instead.

Switched from Unity to AGS, which was a good choice in retrospect, although it meant I was doing tutorials and intense googling for a bit longer than I had planned. Next time I really have to prepare more! Make what you know and use the tools that you know is really a must for me, or I can only dream about submitting within 72 hours :D

Never done pixel art in such amounts before, feeling rather exhausted. I usually only draw some occasional pink helicopters and rainbows for my kids :v:

Thanks for this awesome event and I hope you all had a great time! I'm looking forward to participate in the next events and maybe create something more complex haha :)

My game -

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/the-delivery-1

First update to our funky game!

We updated our platformer! (which has a wonderfully marvelous long-long title)

We fixed major game-breaking bugs in the jam version so you can play the game without worrying about it messing itself up too much.

For the post-jam version we added some minor updates, so you can kind of just play that but if you want to be strict on the rules, we made it a separate thing!

We fixed some level design so the game shouldn't be annoying and uncompletable now. We added controls to the game so you dont have to have two things open, just open it and play!

We changed the web version to remove all fancy backgrounds so it renders nicely and doesn't display magenta bars all over the place! We also removed a bunch of enemies from one of the levels so the lag should hopefully be gone now.

All levels can be completed! all collectibles can be colected! * Fun * can be had easier than ever before!

We added some daylight to the levels so they're prettier.

So pretty!

You can play with mobile / touch controls

Until I saw a post earlier, I thought everyone did the mobile button thing?

Play Brass Monkeys

I added one button too many, the \/ was supposed to make him duck cannon balls, but I ran out of time. :smile:

About

This is my first jam since LD40 and the first one since I think LD35 that I did almost all of the programming for myself. I almost didn't participate this time around but on Dawn (8pm) of the last day I had an idea and managed to crunch through the night non-stop to get this done in time. It's a simple game but I am very happy with how it came out and will be interested in seeing how it stacks up.

Post launch update!!

Based of some things players have said I have updated the game! It now features a saving system as well as faster level transitions! Enjoy!

Roll to your destiny as an undelivered package in our game Post Haste!

Main Menu.jpg

You’re just an ordinary package, relaxing on a shelf until you realise something has gone horribly wrong – you’re not on the delivery truck! In this game, you will traverse the warehouse, encountering hazards and meeting friendly objects in the biggest adventure of your life so far.

You will roll your way across planks at great heights whilst trying to avoid giant puddles of water. Fall off? Well, let’s hope you can find an alternative path towards your main goal.

Check it out here!

not-a-changelog

bugfixes:   * fix mouse desktop buddy clipping behind images * fix aspect ratio issue causing some players unable to interact with the taskbar and icons not being displayed correctly * fix incorrect tags in image captchas that made them impossible to solve (pickles should not have a soul.) * one-click captcha (“i’m not a robot”) audio desynced each time it appears. Removed sound for now. * fix not being able to click the one-click captcha sometimes * fix issues that caused player to be able to prematurely access upgrades they hadn’t unlocked yet * fix cursor being gigantic * fix incorrect download links in Grimm’s Wares window * fix Grimm’s Wares version numbers resetting to 0 randomly * hide “UPDATE: …” text in Grimm’s Wares window because update feature was never implemented

indeed, we accidentally gave the pickle a soul. was it crueler to remove it? picklesoul.png

Musician here! First time on a game jam, and had a blast.

Hi everyone! Now that I've had a couple of days to recover from the 72-hour mad dash, thought I'd recap my thoughts on my first Ludum Dare (and first game jam of any kind) ever - from a musician's perspective!

TL;DR: Play our game, Constellation Courier! It's a cozy adventure where you connect creatures living all over outer space. You can find our game page here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/galaxsea

fish.gif

Background:

Being on a game jam team was definitely a novel experience (in this case, a visual novel experience - haha). Again, I've never been in a game jam - but I was inspired to get involved after watching my friends (now teammates) work on LudumDare games before.

While I've composed and produced music of all kinds previously, I'd never had to deliver music with this kind of quick turnaround time. So when we first started brainstorming ideas for the delivery theme and settled on delivering letters across space, I knew I had to get moving on the music quickly. Amidst energetic planning convos, I sat down at the piano and began plunking out ideas as we all fleshed out the structure of the game we would be making.

Goals:

The overall goals I came up with for the music were threefold: - Match the game itself (both the art and the in-game experience). - Evoke the sense of wonder (and melancholy) that you get when you observe the vast expanse of space. - Embrace the player with "chill vibes" and coziness (small but meaningful warmth in a big, expanding world).

(From a functional standpoint, it was important to also have the music build up towards the end - and to have some kind of music for navigating space, and some kind of music to play during conversations.)

Process & Results:

Main Theme: "Constellations"

Working in Ableton Live, I turned my rough sketches (muddy, quick voice recordings of the keyboard mixed up with debates and conversations about game ideas in the background) into about an 8-minute theme. The main theme I composed and produced, "Constellations", starts close to the chest with a solo guitar, then slowly expands outwards and blasts off into space, before returning back "home". (Soundcloud link: https://soundcloud.com/hanadulcet/constellations-from-constellation-courier)

Ableton.png (Too many instruments / plugins to fit in one screen at once...)

Then, it was up to me to mix, master, and chop up that 8-minute theme into shorter, loopable segments that could stand alone well by themselves or also alternate with each other in a meaningful way. I also helped code some logic in the game to pick which segments to play at different stages of the journey. So, all of the music that you hear while traveling between planets in our game is part of that main theme, but the pacing of the music selections is specifically chosen to help build a bit of anticipation towards the endings of the game.

(Note: There's even a secret about the ending music in the game that I'll hint at, but I won't explain here - that would spoil the game. You'll have to find out what it is yourself by playing the game...)

Conversations: "Space Bossa Nova"

Alongside the main theme, I also made a "Space Bossa Nova" (not totally a bossa nova, but roll with it). It aimed to be jazzy, smooth, and relatively simple - providing a backdrop for conversations with our characters that would add to them but not distract the player. One of my main pet peeves with music in games tends to be when the music repeats too quickly and too often, so I went out of my way to record multiple piano solos to go with it. (Soundcloud link: https://soundcloud.com/hanadulcet/space-bossa-nova-from-constellation-courier)

And of course, once we decided that we were adding a disco planet, I knew I had to add disco music. I re-arranged the bossa nova into a funky disco bop that you could easily groove to (and I hope you enjoy dancing to it in the game). (Soundcloud link: https://soundcloud.com/hanadulcet/disco-bossa-nova-from-constellation-courier)

Conclusion:

While it was definitely a time crunch to get so much music done in the span of the 72 hours, I really, really enjoyed getting to create so much music. It was easy to make the music happen when I had the best teammates I could ask for: a huge shout-out to Skoprimon (@skoprimon), DGo (@dgo), Diego Teran (@diego-teran), and peachy (@peachy) for all the amazing work they poured into this game. Composing music requires inspiration, and inspiration was aplenty from these wonderful folks.

All in all, I had a great experience, and I would absolutely love to be a part of the next LudumDare. If you made it this far, here's a small trailer that I made for the game. (Fun fact: I made this cut of the main theme specifically for the trailer!)

How we utilized GPT in our game

So if you haven't seen it yet, here's our game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/stand-and-deliver-2

Basically we really wanted to do something obscure, and try to avoid the obvious when it came to the prompt. During our brain storming we thought about "dialogue/joke delivery" as a concept, but how do you make a game about a player telling jokes? How do you assess something as nebulous as humor programatically?

Well it just so happened that I had been spending a lot of time working with the gpt-api recently, and I thought it might actually be a great fit.

We very quickly prototyped some prompts using chatGPT to see if it was even remotely possible, we were looking for gpt's ability to react differently depending on the input, and for it's reactions to seem sensible. Screenshot 2023-05-04 122946.jpg Screenshot 2023-05-04 122955.jpg

I also wanted to be certain I could force it into giving me easily parse-able data, so far so good!

The next step was to try and engineer some prompts that would let gpt fill the various roles we had in mind for it, I wish I had kept some of the progress but all I have are the finals here:

The Crowd: `` role: "user", content: You are the collective minds of the audience in a play, you are watching an improv show where the actors are given a prompt, you are reacting to each line of dialogue. You love a good joke. You love it when they use the prompt.

            Here is the prompt the actors were given, use this for context:
            ${prompt}

            Here is the transcript from the show so far, they are improvising based on the prompt:
            ${ messages.map(h => {
                return `${h.role == 'user' ? 'Actor' : 'Support'}: ${h.content}`
            }).join('

') }

            You are judging the Actor their lines start with "Actor:", not "Support:". Only critique the Actor's performance based on their lines. Ignore dialogue from Support.
            Use the following format. Your response must be valid json. You may only respond with a single json object. Nothing else. No extra messages.
            {
              "scores": {
                "humor": {score}, // 1-10 How funny is the actors last line? Is it a good joke?
                "relevance": {score} // 1-10 Are they following the prompt and keeping in character? Does their dialogue make sense?
                },
                "feedback": "{your_message}" // Give your thoughts here, summarize your feelings? keep this to 20 words or less
            }

```
The supporting actor: An actor has just delivered a line of dialogue: ${messages} Here is the prompt they were given: ${prompt} You are the supporting actor, your role is: ${role} ${history.length > 0 ? "Here is the entire transcript of the show, including past messages you sent (you are Support), you should use this for context only" : ""} ${ history.length > 0 ? history.map(h => { return `${h.role == 'user' ? 'Actor' : 'Support'}: ${h.content}` }).join(' ') : '' } You are an improv comedian, you are extremely funny, witty, sometimes a bit silly and playful. You like slapstick comedy and act out your actions like this "*{verb or action}*" You should consider the last line of dialogue from the Actor, and come up with a response that is funny, and makes sense with the prompt, if the actor gave bad dialogue just make something up Keep your response short, no more than 25 words. Write out your response in character, You must respond with only a single line of dialogue, nothing else, do not wrap the response in quotation marks, do not prefix your response with anything Do not start your message with anything like "Support: " or "Friend: " do not use any prefixes at all.
And finally my favorite, the critic: `` role: "user", content: You are a theater critic, you have watched an improv show, You are reviewing an actor, you will be given the transcript of the show to review. You are sarcastic, witty, and snarky. Your critiques are known to be harsh but fair. You love a good joke, you love it when they stick to the prompt.
            Here is the prompt they were given:
            ${prompt}
            Here is the transcript from the show:
            ${ messages.map(h => {
                return `${h.role == 'user' ? 'Actor' : 'Support'}: ${h.content}`
            }).join('
') }
            You are judging the Actor their lines start with "Actor:", not "Support:". Only critique the Actor's performance based on their lines. Ignore dialogue from Support.
            Use the following JSON format. Your response must be valid JSON. You may only respond with a single JSON object. Nothing else. No extra messages.
            {
              "scores": {
                "humor": {score}, // 1-10 How funny were the Actor's lines?.
                "originality": {score}, // 1-10  How well does the actor's dialogue avoid cliches and tropes, how creative is the Actor?
                "relevance": {score}, // 1-10  How well does the Actor's dialogue fit with the prompt?
                "overall": {score} // 1-10  How well did the actor do overall.
                },
                "feedback": "{critique}" // Write an overly wordy, dramatic theater style critique that will appear in the newspaper on the show and the actor's performance, did they keep to the prompt? were they funny and original? keep this to 75 words or less
            }
```

Some things I learned are super important: - Don't be overly specific about behavior/personality - Always give it relevant context early in the prompt - Be OVERLY specific about your required output

It took us a lot of work to get our AI to behave reliably, and even then we still get some odd responses where it seems to have lost the context. It's Ok though, after all this is a relatively complex concept, especially for our poor supporting actor, who has to not only come up with a line, but understand it is playing "the other" character in the prompt.

All in all we are really impressed with how this all came together, and we have one final trick up our sleeve, once GPT4 is available via the api I really think this will completely change how our game works, making the AI far more creative, far more accurate, and most importantly far more human. That will be a simple one line change and I'm really looking forward to that moment.

Thanks for reading!

My favorite Pico-8 games so far

Pico-8's restrictions and intentionally limited color palette and sound editor give its games a certain level of charm that you don't always see. I've been trying to hunt down Pico-8 games. Here are a few of my favorites so far:

We've made several games in the past in pico-8 which is always a blast! Even after deciding to try out Godot this game jam, we still ended up going back to a low pixel, limited palette style. We even found ourselves going back to Pico-8's chiptune music editor for the game music! (Check out our game, Rail Blazer if you haven't already) . I'm sure I missed a bunch of other great pico-8 games. Please link them so I can give them a play!

Please send me your OST bangers

ezgif.com-video-to-gif.gif

I finally caught up to my rate trades and now I'd really like to play some games with a big focus on original music! I played many games with great soundtracks this jam and even made music a big part of my game, and hope to do so more in the future.

If you've got a game with a BANGING original soundtrack, please link it so I can play it! I'd also appreciate if you checked out my game Superstar Surgeon: a Sensitive Subject. I play rate and comment on everyone who comments on my game so we can exchange the knoledj.

guys ,still some rate

A haiku game

To find your sunshine

Grab your parts through the abyss

When found - grasp brightly

ST1_swings.png

Earlier, we at Ardskape released our full version of the 7Deeps adventure, originated from the LD48 jam.

Sunshine Trial, our submission for LD53, is within the 7Deeps lore, however there's no essential connection to it.

Sunshine Trial is a short expression towards light and betterness. The game gives you the trial, passing through the tides (astral, or else), through transformation, catching to the sunshine, getting yourself whole, putting your parts together.

ST4_abyss.png

The game, however, is not designed for mental institutions, especially not for those men, who can't feel the walls, if they're not seen.

Controls are also the part of the narrative here, for our tad kid, when transformed, can only strive through the tides (using space); there's no way back because he can't go back. But sometimes he needs to stop striving, let the flow, to get the light doors opened.

ST3_maze.png

Turn to Sunshine - is the only text seen in the game, which tells the basic idea of how to solve the maze.

The idea of this game has originated from our early prototype of a different kind of maze-like game. We're giving this one the fresh start, rethought, redone, with an aim of developing a casual-like, yet thoughtful, maze experience further.

For now, there's a haiku game: a journey to befriend some sunshine (and don't let that "sunshine" of yours outburst).

This world needs more good and shining, doesn't it always?

Have you ever deliver mail with a crossbow ?

We're so glad of all your amazing feedbacks ! Thank you very much :heart:
