Limited space definition
- 1 having a limit; restricted; confined.
- 2 without fullness or scope; narrow.
- 3 (of governing powers, sovereignty, etc.) restricted or checked, by or as if by a constitution, laws, or an assembly.
I was going to bed after the theme reveal because it's awful, but my brain didn't want to and here I go starting working on a stupid idea i got, let's hope this will be a bit fun to play
Have fun everyone and good luck
Imagine working hundreds of hours into removing spammers and making the website extremely good, hosting a game jam, all while being sick. Then seeing once again that 80 percent of everyone who joins hated the theme they voted 💀
May thee all have a jam of a life time! Huzzah!
George Carlin, that's who.

Thankfully, I managed to come up with an idea for this theme that's different from my (failed) idea for LD 42, which would have been a puzzle game where you have to control a robot using a keyboard whose spacebar is breaking down.
Don't like it.
A bit late, but 'tis tradition, so...
I'm in!
Tools of the trade:
Good luck to everyone!

Going to bed with a pretty solid idea, tomorrow the work begins. Good luck everybody and remember to have fun.

This was an A.I.'s response to my asking for images with "limited space." These are some of the most spacious homes I've ever seen.
In my last post: "If I do participate, it’ll be with something extremely simple – like, confining myself to a single screen. Pong levels of simple."
After theme announcement: "Well then, universe, I see you're conspiring to make me code after all this weekend..."
i don't like the theme either, but so what, i've got a lot of ideas. and i've also chosen one that i both like and can see myself actually doing, so just throwing these ideas out there. feel free to use
if you have your own scraped ideas, feel free to share them as well ^_^
I have formulated a plan! The brainstorming took me all over the place, this was pretty much the last theme I imagined to win...
I rested on an idea about a physics-based game where the player has to navigate extreme clutter that is limiting his space.
Here are some boards from Excalidraw:

Also grabbed the "Steam Lords" palette from Lospec

I hope y'all are enjoying the brainstorm!! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, too!
The theme is pretty bad, but I've managed to come up with an interesting idea!!! Also, first time using Godot  !!!
I wish you all the best! I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with! Good luck!
Limited space was one of the themes that i kinda ignored.. BUT after a bit of braintstorming i think i've got a neat idea. I'm sure someone else made something similar but it's worth a try. Now starting on the art and thinking about the finer mechanics and hopefully ma partner can make then the coding - we're using godot! (i have zero coding exp ._.)
So excited for this! Theme is interesting imo and after a good night sleep (it's 2 am...) I will start working on it!! Not sure what engine to use though since I am still a newbie in coding :"D
It's "Ludum Dare 42 - Running out of Space" all over again.
Stay creative, folks!
I totally forgot about the tradition of doing this! I'm a lil different here as I'm a tabletop creator (like physical games, not digital tabletop stuff, although one of the tools below makes that possible).
My tools of the trade are: * Canva for creating rulebooks, card images, etc. It's also great for codesigning, as more than one person can mess with it at once. Note: I do NOT the AI aspects though, I don't do AI-generated stuff. * nanDeck for generating the card files if I do any cards. * Screentop.gg for a digital implementation of the game (if I do one). It's like Tabletop Simulator but free, doesn't overheat computers, and doesn't have any queerphobia like TTS does! * An HP OfficeJet 8015e printer and an HP Instant Ink for the zillion test prints I'll do. 🤣
And as for ideas, I'm looking to make one of these (or something entirely different if my brain decides to chase a different squirrel): * A space survival game with a shrinking ship: The parts of your ship are on separate cards, and you use them to adjust the dice you roll each round against the onslaught of threats that keep coming at you. As your ship takes damage, the parts flip over and are less useful; if a damaged part gets hit again, it's permanently lost and falls off, making your ship smaller and smaller. * An inventory management polyomino roll and write in which you gather items dropped in a dungeon, making them fit in a smaller and smaller space in your backpack.
I hope everyone has an amazing Ludum Dare, I am MASSIVELY HYPED myself!!!
-✨Beth, apparently one of like 5 people who are actually happy that Limited Space won
I really liked the idea when I voted for it, but now I actually both love and hate it. Initially I thought about some obvious things like limited inventory, but after theme reveal I have so many crazy ideas I hate it  . Going to brainstorm it with my partner until we get to the least crazy and most fun ones...
I don't know about the other veterans, but for my part I'm starting to get tired of having to redo LDs that I've already done before. It's not like there are tens of thousands of possible original themes, right? 😤
Nevermind. Let's find something original on a theme which is not at all, trying to not thinking of the next LD theme, which will probably be "lonely", "don't let it die" or "unbalanced"
good luck to all!!

In a previous Ludem Dare I was able to embed an html5 game on my page. This time around I don't see the option. Is the new expectation to host on itch and link to it?
As far as I understanding reusing code from old projects is all good, right? I'm doing the compo.
This is a outrage! I literally can't believe this. I DEMAND a recount.
Wait a sec... actually, I'm only outraged because I'm stumped on ideas. Good luck to all, been looking forward to this!
Bewarer of Dwarf!!!
Spent this hour crocheting and brainstorming ideas. Came up with some and sent them to my partner for further work. But for now - it's time to get some rest. See yall this morning!
Shoutout to everyone else who's making weird stuff
Finally thought of an idea on what to make of this theme.
I will be using MonoGame for the groundwork, and Aseprite for the art. For music this time I'll go as simple as using any browser music making tool.
This theme is so broad, you can do almost anything, because everything in a game can be limited or is limited anyway .. space in a map, space in your inventory, space in your vehicle, the entire universe, ... On the other hand, you don't have to do anything to satisfy the theme so it becomes irrelevant.

The theme remind me "running out of space" of the LD 42, but this is an interesting theme.

Haven't done a Ludum Dare since 2015-016 so I'm stoked to be doing one now. Like the theme too!
Seems I'm gonna be going back to my narrative-driven, dialogue-heavy roots... and back to my PICO-8 roots as well.
No dialogue so far, though:

The idea is this: the Earth is about to be destroyed by an asteroid (or something) and everyone's being evacuated into space via rockets. You're in charge of one of the rockets, but it has limited space, and there's not enough room for everyone. So how do you decide who lives and who dies? Well, that's the dilemma you'll be faced with.
For now, though, I'm heading off to bed. Goodnight, and good luck.
Not really, I just haven't participated in a while. Hope I can finish my idea!
It's kind of puzzle genre to me since first game title came to my mind is Sokoban which is suited the theme. But hey I might end up with physics based game too since there is certain constrains too to overcome. A premise were done at least.
3D Tetris Tower Game, where blocks fall from the sky.

about 15s loop of it, to be precise

and that is likely all the progress today (besides mechanics ideas)

Using something like this for palette:

Did some really rough ideas:

I'm in!
This is the idea, you work at the factory and need to pack the stuff - but you space is limited, how much can you fit in the box before the time run out (your shift ends) or your boss fires you ( too many items on the belt).
That's better than my first impression, limited space wasn't exactly my fav but i'm really proud of what i made out of this. My partner is sleeping (it's 2am in the morning here) so tomorrow i'll get his feedback and what can be done programming wise and what not. So let's see what tomorrow brings!
Here is an Concept Teaser for 3d tetris tower game where blocks are falling from the sky

So I took part in LD42, but my game "Orbitum Scaterum" didn't make it to a playable state for anyone except me. Reason being ([long and complicated blog post])[https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/orbitum-scaterum]
So I'm reviving this idea (because it's better than my "tree of knowledge" idea that spawned with the theme announcement.) And hopefully people will actually be able to play the game this time!
Wish me luck

It was difficult, but I implemented wall jumping that feels fair and accounts for fraction of a second "errors"
jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!!!!!
With a twist of course... Biggest challenge is going to be getting the multiplayer setup quickly :dizzy:
Hope you all have a fun time, looking forward to playing your games

I personally hate the theme, but if people voted for it, they must have seen some value in it.
So to every individual who voted for it, I'd like to know what appealed to you about it?
Okay, so we are testing how our kinda snake mechanic would work

I'm going with a slowly collapsing plane of existance for how i'm dealing with the theme. I've been wanting to learn react so instead of a game engine I'm doing this with reactjs. got a initial thing building and up here: https://lathomas64.github.io/ldjam54/
The most classic "limited space" game I can think of is n-puzzle, such as the slider puzzle, China's Huarong Dao
It's been a while since I participated and I'm excited to do it again!
Managed to brainstorm a few ideas and decided on one I liked, so I developed that to a basic proof of concept and I think I can make it work :)
Going to get some sleep now (it's 2am for me)

The games that come to mind about "limited space" are probably n-puzzle, such as China's Huarong Road, and digital slider puzzles.

We've done 4 previous Ludum Dare's and this is probably the fastest we've come up with an idea (only 3 hours!). Pretty pumped to have a lot of extra time for development. Really happy with our idea, it even fit on our tiny whiteboard!

I'm wondering what the 9-5 has to do with the theme
Started 1 hour late - but got my idea now! Will start to visualize it with some doodles, and see what i can come up with.
For anyone still brainstorming here are some ideas i had:
(Un)limited Backpack You have to fit items in a backpack, but there are also backpacks you can fit inside that provide more space than they occupy and able to be stacked inside each other. Therefore you have limited space, but its unlimited! Combine with simple battle and stats system where you loot weapons and armor that you have to store to increase your stats to survive fight which drop even more loot and so on.
Chicken Breeder - Limited Edition You have a chicken farm that can fit 3 chicken and a cage on a pole that can hold another chicken. You have to cross breed chicken in that limited space to find all the combinations and finish with the golden chicken!
Edge of the Universe You are a spaceship equipped with an enlarge-ray. You are able to absorb power from suns to fill your battery and use it to increase your size. There are black holes, space nations and space creatures that can hurt you, and the bigger you get the more suns you need to start the ray again. In the end, you are so big that you barely fit into space and can actually see the edge of the universe!
Survive under the Dome You live under a protective dome, every night monsters attack the dome but the townspeople protect the town. Your job is to fix the dome during the day - but you cant leave the dome to do so - so the more you fix it the fewer your space gets. You get material from the scout squad, but its random size and gets in one by one. Try to survive as long as possible before you have no more space to repair your dome!
Feel free to use any of those ideas as is or tweaked, and leave me a comment so i can test it when its finished!
Basic movement is done!
You control a spaceship which moves in one direction until it hits something. Goal will be to reach a space station. I like the idea, but currently it feels too much like Chu Chu Rocket. I need to change that. We'll see tomorrow. Now off to bed!!!

A game where you're trying to get to the front of a rock concert
We've all been there

Welp, just like a previous post below, we were working on a space scroller while dodging planets. Now rethinking stuff.

Yooo. We're making "Fridge Frenzy." Picture this: a spinning fridge, five shelves, and a ton of tetris-style food cubes. Your challenge? Juggle limited space, store ingredients, cook meals, and avoid the spread of rot. It's a fast-paced culinary adventure where quick decisions are key.
Working on a blank blueprint project in Unreal Engine, aiming to submit for the Jam.
Progress so far; we have a "fridge" that spins.

Just got a little fish in, but he's a good fish

I have spent the last 4 and a half hours or so not working on a game but on my game engine. I decided to see if I could use it for digital art drawn in Krita rather than pixel art, so I added functionality to directly import Krita files.
It turns out this is very very annoying. I owe everything to a handful of forum posts I found online, as well as a substantial amount of trial and error. If anyone ever has questions about writing code to automatically export Krita images, well, I guess I know how to do that now.
Of course, had I quit one hour in when the export was mostly working, I probably would have saved myself time as the additional niceties that I implemented will probably not save me three hours of time over the rest of the compo. But... you know how it is.
Also, I suppose I might consider doing Ludum Dare Extra anyways, just because that would be an excuse to actually work on a game + game engine together for a longer period of time, which would be more productive than just one weekend. But, I'm not sure I would actually have the motivation to do that.

Star trucking across the universe, our hold is tiny and time is short!
This time i really want to try something along the Tower Defense genre, even if it's difficult to adapt the theme. Perhaps i'll make the towers larger than usual, so the player will have the added difficulty of finding a large enough space to place them.
Unlike this time last time in the compo, I actually have an idea of what I want to do. May I direct your attention to this excellently drawn chart:

Rails bullet hell with constrained movement where you take damage if you leave the safe path plotted out.
However, ideas can be a dangerous thing. I thought "If I make a Halloween game, my computer should be in Halloween mood." This is a dangerous rabbit-hole to go down.
In summary, I wasted two hours I could have spent working on the game, making a Halloween Windows XP theme for IceWM. Why do I do this to myself? I do not know. I share this so that you may laugh at my stupidity with me.

I don't think it saved last time, so here's my fish gif. Maybe it will become a game

It's not much yet, but this (strangely Minecraft-looking) prototype should be a fully-FUNctional puzzle platformer by the end of tomorrow! And I've scheduled out all day to work on it, unlike... many other jams. https://youtu.be/u9JNYhBLUWg
Basically started 2 hours late or so, saw the theme and thought I can do something cool at least. I have a pretty good idea on what to do but it may potentially be too ambitious for now but I'm willing to take the risk. Right now got in mind of a somewhat psychological thriller that takes advantage of very small (limited :D) spaces to invoke isolated feelings in the player.
-> Excuse the legitimately terrible drawn image of the layout of my game <-

I have a general idea of the layout of the rooms but now need to flesh it out.
Okay, I just woke up now despite the alarms and now I must go to school for another 6 hours or so... And I am just a 14 year old student anyways... So should I still participate in the game jam? (I really want to participate)(I have an idea)

So...we are pretty stuck on the theme, and just moving on to make random and worry about theme later. I made an orbiting rope thingy that can be tossed away with an input. Our idea isn't solid but we are currently thinking this could become some kind of delivery game where you need to time tossing at houses around the screen edge. It is late and we are kind of burned out for the day so this is just where we are now.
It's 4am here and I've been asleep since long before the theme reveal 😂
I'm going to have maybe 4 hours total over the next few days for working on this, so my scope has to be pretty small. I'm thinking of remaking my first LD game from six years ago - I've improved so much since then, it'll be interesting to see if I can improve it! I have a few ideas for improvements, and I think I'll be able to make a few simple enemies work too.

Joined forces with my friend @rsr-studios. This is our first team entry and hopefully we manage to finish something that is fun to play!

Sea kelp can be collected and thrown. If you collect a lot it gets bundled up and it weighs you down, so you can toss it around and pick it up later. Oh, and it's sticky!
it took me a bit to get an idea going, but main mechanics are in place, just building out a level now

how are you doing?

Just need to add the rest of the mechanics and maybe some more variety if i have time then I'm done! Also how popular is python in these jams?
My game is a platformer where you must get past obstacles while the lava rises, shrinking the playable space.
Things have been going really smoothly so far. I'm hoping to have the "Minimum Viable Game" finished tonight, or at least close to finished. After that, I'll focus on additional content and polishing.

OK super excited for this one. Really need to do a jam. Gonna see how far I can get things.
So after some brainstorming with my friend @icaro-niz and struggling with my Blender installation, we finally have some basic models and level design. We also made good progress on setting up the code repo, ready for TDD and CI/CD with auto-deployments to itch.io by commits.

Haha this was definitely not our favorite theme... but that is part of the fun!
Im in! Totally unprepared. Dont know what tools to use and I have no idea about what to do.
Tonight I've just gotten started on my game. Never done LD before, excited to give it a try!
Considered a bunch of ideas but settled on a stealth game about stowing away in some sort of cargo ship or delivery truck and having to hide from people when they're loading/unloading stuff.
One loading person (brown rectangle) walking back and forth and one player (pink rectangle) moving around in response to keyboard/gamepad controls! Tomorrow it's time for all the game bits!

Moving from my usual side scroll comfort to first person 3d is quite the challenge.

Ok, i decided to pivot to Godot 4 because.. thinking of limited space made me think of watching the garbage trucks navigating my neighborhood and how they manage not to mash up all the cars.. so why not!
Quick mockup in Godot 4.. good enough for first night. Next up will be making camera work right, add some lovely flopping garbage lids, music, custom assets, car alarms, houses and such..... whew.. we'll see how far i get :grimacing:

Working title: TIS-8829

Basic layout, code parsing and error checking, output validation complete. Next up: evaluation and debugging tools!
... is very tricky to come up with any ideas I would be happy with! Panic!
I am going to make a scuba diving/submarine management style game for this jam. So far I have a character and an idea. Fortunately I actually have time to finish this jam...maybe
