It's my first time, when jam game rises to Steam

Initially, it was Ludum Dare 57 entry. Honestly, I didn't expect the game to attract so much attention on itch. And now I'm getting ready for the first demo on Steam. Develop a web platform to help form teams to make new indie games

Many people who have studied game development in colleges or universities are familiar with internal incubators, where students pitch projects to each other, form teams, and create their own games.

I am building a platform so that anyone passionate about game development can participate — both as authors of new games and as specialists who bring these games to life. Experienced members can also take on the role of mentors and advisors, providing guidance and support to other projects.

I am developing this project in my free time and would be happy to welcome new authors, participants, and experts, as well as receive your feedback and suggestions on what could be improved or removed.

Clap engine update

Here's a progress update since the previous post about my game engine. A full description of what and why it is is here.

That post was ~400 commits and a full LDJAM game ago. Since then, a lot has changed — some systems were refactored, others rewritten, and more than a few bugs were put out of their misery.

Clap is a low-level, minimal-dependency, C-based game engine, and it just hit its v0 milestone. It didn't have any version before, but at a 5-year mark and 1863 commits, I figured it's time.


Highlights since the previous post

  • Color grading via LUTs, including procedural LUT generation
  • Variance Shadow Maps (VSM): no more aliasing and peter-panning
  • SSAO (screen-space ambient occlusion) — because subtle shadows matter
  • PBR-style lighting with metallic + roughness support
  • Distance-based LOD and entity scaling (using meshoptimizer)
  • Dynamic resolution scaling for shadow maps
  • Touch events → mouse input conversion for WebAssembly
    • Towards the Light can now be completed on a smartphone
    • Debug UI is now usable with a touchscreen
  • Real-time render debugger / controller via ImGui
  • Entity inspector as well as light, character etc controls via ImGui

What's probably going to happen next

  • Metal renderer: because MacOS's OpenGL is on life support
  • Various rendering tricks/eye candy
  • Procedural geometry/playspace/etc
  • Scene serialization / saving changes from the in-place editor
  • UI overhaul
  • Boring things like entity system/multithreading/specialized memory allocators

What's not going to happen

  • A standalone editor with "Run" and "Export" buttons
  • Scripting language integration (lua or homespun) in which to write gameplay logic

"Comic red" color grading

The inspiration for this was Sin City, and maybe it doesn't quite get to the cinematographic quality of it, it definitely does bring out comic book vibes. clap-comic-red.png

This is just a must have. Also shows scene control, entity inspector, render passes in the pipeline and a debug preview of the edge detection pass that generates extra thick outlines in the scene. clap-matrix-ui2.png

Hi there! 🙋‍♀️

Last year, we ran our first Ludum Praxi jam. The jam exists for two reasons: 1. To be practice for Ludum Dare (hence the name, which means "Game Practice" if the translation worked right lol) 2. To inspire other analog creators to do Ludum Dare in the future!

This is a jam that's entirely for analog creators. As the vast majority of people here are already doing Ludum Dare jams AND not analog creators, this is instead a call for you to try something new. Try making a game without any code at all! Just words! Make a card game, a board game, a journaling game, whatever inspires you. I typically aim to make something using standard dice and/or a deck of cards, so people don't have to print anything or use components they're less likely to have... but then generally my Ludum Dare games get into ridiculous territory and you need to print stuff or have lots of dice or something 😅

Although it's likely incredibly obvious, this is NOT officially related to Ludum Dare in any way, it's just something I do for fun to try to get more of my analog-game-making friends and "family" into joining Ludum Dare, or at least appreciating the rush of making a game in 72 hours. Ludum Dare is what got me into making video games over a decade ago, and each jam is always amongst my favorite events of each year (even when I'm not proud of what I made lol).

While Ludum Praxi doesn't have this robust, incredible community, nor does it have the awesome systems for rating games and getting themes, it's still a cozy lil event that does its best 🧡

Game-dev wise: I believe we COULD learn A LOT from many of those games. Even though some of these don't run well or it's awkward till you figure the controls out, there are many classics! Note: many of those are available on SEGA (via emulators for comp) and they sometimes run better there. I played a lot on.. SEGA. Some of those on ancient computers though.

Which of those have you played? Is it a trip down memory lane for you? It sure is for me.. !

MSc Study Volunteers

Hi, I'm a long time Ludum Dare participant and this academic year I decided to go back to uni and do a masters. I’m running a short research study for my MSc dissertation at the University of Kent and I’m looking for volunteers aged 18 or over to play-test three mini-games and fill in a brief questionnaire (System Usability Scale & User Experience Questionnaire) per game.

What’s involved? • Download the games (Windows 10) from the event page. • Play each game, approximately 2 to 3 minutes per game. • Complete the anonymous surveys (1 per game, total ≈ 5 min each).
