Ludum Dare 56

Solo or Team?

Greetings!

I'm back with another fun little community engagement post, as I'm curious about why people pick to be on a team or go solo, as a person haunted by leadership woes of the past I always went solo, but I see many people wanting to be on a team, and I also would like to try doing a team based LD (not for 56 or 57 even)...

SO! What motivates you guys to go solo or go in a team, and if you are solo what aspect of gamedev do you wish you could do better or wish somebody else could do for you?

It's almost time!

Greetings!

Possibly my last post before the Jam! I just wanted to tell everyone to have a good time, let's make some awesome game, have fun, meet new people, and have a fun relaxing time! I'm super hyped for the jam as I already met and spoken to quite a lot of awesome people! Hoping to meet more during the rating segment of the jam!

I'm live!

Greetings!

I saw somebody else do this so I thought why not... I'm livestreaming LD 56 (as usual) on my youtube! come say hi if you got time!

(idk how to embed links and stuff sorry :( but the channel name is JustHexyl)

I don't need it...

Greetings!

I'm seeing a lot of concept arts which is lovely! I'm doing well myself minus the 2D game segment of my game... I'm thinking about pixel art and well uhh...

Yeah... no I don't need aseprite... ms paint will do... right? RIGHT?!

Question regarding help from family

Greetings!

So I have rammed into a roadblock in the form of 2D art, I just can't do it... So I wanted to ask that if I ask my sister does that disqualify me from compo as I did ask for external help?

Something wicked this way comes...

as the old saying goes: "Don't go towards the light"

imageem2024-10-05/em093351570.png

After so many people were encouraging me in my last post I put my brain on maximum work capacity (aka had a coffee), and ironed out the 2D art dilemma, so this little sneaky peeky is dedicated to them (and well for everyone to look at this heavily obscured image of a creature lol)

Status update!

Greetings!

I see many people do these so why not! I'm happy to anounce that since my mild breakdown at the start with 2D art I have made staggering progress, the game is conceptually done and is relatively easy to finish up when I get to that, music is coming along, just finished up my voice acting, now all I need to do is finish up some more models for the game and then get to making the 2 endings (yes I plan for 2 endings), hope everyone else is doing well in the jam

whoops...

welp... I just realized my "gameplay" is incredibly boring and got no idea how to amend that besides adding an addicting minigame to my game... besides that I scrapped the menu together so yippee (still need a title and more assets for it)

Dawn of the final day!

Rise and shine jammers!

The dawn of the final day (for the compo) is upon us! It's now or never guys, remember still plenty of time to get things done and enjoy the creative process!

Sorry, not sorry

I'm sorry in advance to anybody that gets the ultra rare 0.01% death speech in my game (I'm not actually sorry, and they can't be skipped)

main menu showcase

oh right I forgot to show my super awesome main menu screen! I also found a lovely game name for it... it came out super well!

imageem2024-10-06/em182238832.png

it's just not good enough

2 hours on the clock so much things to do... I don't think I can finish this and call it any good, and my brain is going on a strike so I wanna sleep... dang it... I need so many sound effects and the main game loop was unmendable so it's boring... really not my greatest performance (minus the music that went really well)

Blood, Sweat, and Tears

Alas the Compo has ended and I made a pretty simple game, my hope is that it works (I never tested the non-speedrun route) BUT! After 30-60 minutes of pure pain I did get a web version up and running SO... now people can just play it without downloading so yay! (I lowkey wouldn't download my game if I was not me LOL)

Any danger zone games need some love?

Hello again!

As the title reads I'm looking for games in the danger zone (less than 20 ratings) I'm feeling particularly up for games today so I wanna give some love to games that got less ratings, so plop them down below!

More danger zone games!

Greetings!

Last post where I asked for danger zone games went really well! The game I tried were a treat and criminally underrated gems!

So following this trend I ask upon the great community of Ludum Dare to hand over your danger zone (less than 20 rating) games! I shall try and rate your games to help the game get out of the danger zone!

(also yay new art style)

future plans

'ello again!

I sat down looked out my window and pondered "man I really should try a larger project with max effort and all fun" something just large enough to keep me entertained and working for a while on my game dev stuff, but not so much as to demand a team... don't get me wrong working in a team would be great, but finding people that have the same vision as me to help me out is hard, and still not confident I can manage and get a tteam running again...

So that leaves me with 4 choices!

A. I could push a rework/update for John's Visage (LD 55 entry of mine) so it reached maximum potential because it's my favorite jam game...

B. I could retry with Bermuda, concept has been refined in my head and I truly hate how it came out... a retry/redesign would let me sleep soundly knowing it is not awful now...

C. I could start a fangame project for a game got this idea to combine my stuffs with this game's stuffs and I know one of the devs would be thrilled!

D. keep making whatever the hell I'm making in HTML... yeah I got into this checkbox pseudo-minesweeper coding for my class and I really like it, just need to add all the effects for the different checkboxes and it would be done...

So yeah lot's of things I could try doing, and sure looking for a team to start up maybe in advance to LD 57 would be fine but more so those 4... so yeah erm...

INTERACTIVE SEGMENT!

Randomly pick one of the 4 letters above! most voted might win or I may spin a wheel!

And share your future plans with game dev! I saw many cool games so I'm hoping atleast a good portion of people will update their games!

Highlight of my entry: OST

Hello again!

SO today I make a post about the highlight of Bermuda: The Music!

So the music of bermuda came out actually really good compared to myself and that's because I swapped to a new music software (1BitDragon) and I been loving making musics for my game since then, I occassionally check my youtube to see how the music videos are doing and I do see a few views here and there which makes me happy some people enjoy these tiny music video things, probably will keep doing it for other releases/updates for previous entries!

Anyways you can play my game here!

Or better yet just listen to the tunes in this playlist!

Back into the danger zone!

:warning: DANGER ZONE CREATORS! :warning:

The jam is almost over, if you game is still below 20 ratings put them down below! I will do my best to rate them, and bring attention to them in this post! If you are suggesting your own game or somebody else's game be sure to try the other suggestions in this post! I believe that the danger zone has more hidden gems for me to explore, and everyone did their best so I shall assist in bringing people out of the danger zone!

The long awaited post-mortem!

Greetings!

I have been waiting quite a long time to write up my post mortem for this Ludum Dare! I plan to separate it into the good, the bad, and the ugly! So let's begin!

The Good!

As usual rating games was really fun, I also found a newfound love to rating dangerzone games and helping small devs, I found what are essentially hidden gems playing dangerzone games! Alas I also reached the quota to be rated at the end of the Jam so really nice thank you guys for rating my game with relatively positive notes! (mainly about the music, voice acting, and graphics)

The Bad!

As usual we got the bads, basically some people abused the rating which kinda soured my mood, I also believe I could've tested more games but got caught up with life and a bit of laziness X) Alas the jam for me was a bit messy, especially in the coding and before the jam, had some analysis paralises but alas I still delivered a game... speakng of...

The Ugly...

The game, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it Bermuda is a massive fail in my eyes and for really good reasons, the game loop is a mess and somehow way more basic than John's Visage which was a VN by me, the theme really threw a wrench in my machine as explained in the segment above, secondly the game is buggy with key features missing, somehow underperforming Narrowlabs Rumble, a buggy and messy FPS of mine... sure the graphics, music, and VA is nice, I love doing those bits, but I wish the game was more co-hearant and less buggy, I figured out why those are... unfortunately those won't matter next time around (I'm swapping coding language and engine) so yeah Bermuda was a great character... the game introducing him was a huge mess... and eventually maybe 1 day I will try to rectify that in a more expansive browser game, but alas life is busy for that now, so we put Bermuda on the shelf with the other games, to be revisited one day perhaps...
