A few hours of work

A few hours of work, and I’m pretty satisfied with what I have! I’m still not entirely sure where it’s going but it feels fun to just bash stuff with a shield — so that’s something!

The GIF is pretty choppy, so here’s a video as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a80saFTsAvc

When you first bring out your shield you perform a “bash” attack, but if you keep holding down the button, you hold the shield up as you’d expect. If you “bash” your enemy while they’re in the middle of an attack you’ll stun them! It feels pretty smooth right now.

Gonna try adding a projectile enemy type, and maybe some form of traps. Still trying to figure out how to structure the game, but I’m considering making the player just progress through randomized rooms and letting them buy upgrades along the way. Not sure if i’ll have time to do all that stuff, but it would be cool!

Having some problems with collisions… which seems to be a recurring issue with almost every game I’ve made? Jeez, I really need to get better at that stuff. Hopefully I can get it decent by the end of this all!

Looks really good! It looks like it plays pretty smooth so far. The death sprite made me laugh when I first saw it considering how polished the rest of it is already looking.

Start of Day 2

Only a few hours into the day and I’ve made some good progress! I think I actually know what the structure of the game is going to be now.

I’m going to try to focus on getting the core “loop” done, so you can just keep playing over and over. Once that’s done I’m gonna try working on adding a couple more enemy types, polishing up the character sprites, and hopefully add some more visual variety to the environment.

A stretch goal for me is to add in multiple characters to choose from, and possibly items which would give the player benefits for their current run!

My time this weekend is going to be filled with some non-Game Jam related things, so I’m trying to manage my time!

Calling it a day!

I’ve got to go socialize with human beings, so I’m ending the day early! I’ve felt like progress is slowing down now, which kinda sucks. But, since I’m taking a break for a while, maybe it’ll help me recharge for tomorrow?

You can progress through different levels now which is nice (There’s only like, 3 or 4 unique levels for now). I was hoping to get each level randomized in some form, but hopefully I can get to that tomorrow.

Besides level randomization, I have some plans to make the environment look pretty. I’m gonna try to add in an animation for the player’s and enemy legs. I want to add in at least 2 more enemy types. I’m considering adding a dash or run ability, but I’m not sure if that would take away from the focus of the shield. We’ll see.

Almost done?!

Untitled-2

So, it seems like I’m nearly done! I just need to get on Music/Sound effects and then polish! All the main features I wanted in the game are there, though there are some glitches with collision still….

It’ll be cool to actually release something for once! I’ve been working on games a lot the past 3 years, but I hadn’t released anything publicly in that time!

Probably going to take a break for a while, then get back to things later in the evening. Later ya’ll

Submitted

Submitted! This feels so weird after having not released a game in a few years… hopefully ya’ll are nice?

Since I ended up using some sound effects from other sources I just submitted it to the Jam instead of Compo, but oh well! There are still some issues with collision, but I fixed as much as I could. Hopefully it’s still playable for everyone.

I guess tomorrow I get back to the real world. This Jam was fun!

This should be the link to my game: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=51911

If that doesn’t work, then you can just play it here: http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/2c898ded89cc6e099d789d9e02a2833a

I’ll publish it properly to Newgrounds sometime this week.

Finally setup…

Cool, I’m a little late, but got everything setup now!

I had a couple ideas off the top of my head… one of them would be something exploring gender, and the other is a bit more of an allegorical fantasy thing.

I’m leaning more towards the fantasy one, only because I’m kind of in the mood for making an action style game.

I’ll save the idea about gender for another project!

First update!

So, I’m making some slow progress!

Isn’t much gameplay, but I wanted to try my best to make moving around as a fox feel good. I think I did a decent job, though it could definitely use some polish.

Also, testing some blood effects!

It looks cool! what is the name to test it at the end?

Combat!

Have a neat 3-hit combo going with the player, as well as a dodge!

Some very basic enemy AI, which attacks too!

Jeez, now I need to create the human transformation and I can probably start working on the level design!

Honestly, not sure if I’m going to have enough time to get in everything I wanted… lets hope though!

(Not necessarily representative, since the game runs at 60FPS and this GIF seems to miss a couple animation frames)
