Ludum Dare 51

First game jam experience!

Hey! Welcome to my litte sum up of experience I never had a chance to have before, but tought about it for years!

If you want to try out our game check out link in the end ^^"

So how do I start? Yeah, that was the question I asked myself the most during this jam, cause I never made a game in my life. Even better I never made a music in my life! But nevertheless I decided to pick up the challange encouraged by my friend Pusheenerio and join him to take part in my first every jam!

1.Hard begennings. - Excitement grew bigger and bigger, I couldn't belive I'm actually gonna do this. Then the time has come, I checked Ludum Dare page and then... Theme hits. It was "Every 10 seconds", the one we were most afraid off, cause we both didn't like that idea. It was hard to see theme we probably liked the least out of all possible, but nevertheless we didn't want to give up so easily, espeacially me, I wouldn't want to miss out on my big chance. we sat down and brainstormed for a while, trying to come up with best idea. That was really fun part cause I could my creativity go crazy, I loved it! Unfortunetally it took us around 10 hours to choose the idea for us. I wish next time brainstorming will be shorter, but that's something to take a note of for the next jam!

2.Idea is there, but how to make it a reality? - And then the quest to make a game began. Thankfully my friend is a game designer so he was able to show me everything and be responsible for writing most of the scripts. I could learn quite a lot about unity in the process so I'm sure next time will be way easier! Designing level was so much fun especially that I love puzzle games so I could use my creativity at it's best and provide new levels for the game. But then there was one more thing missing - music. I didn't want to just go easy and find some free music, because it's such an important part that makes the game more or less enjoyable so I decided to take taht task upon myslef!

3.Wait Kuboxxxxx, but you have never done music before! - Yeah I didn't, but you have to start somehow, right? I'm pretty familiar with lots of music because I play lots of rhythm games, so I thought it cannot be that hard. I decided to set on 8 bit music to make it simpler, or as I thought, cause it turned out to be harder in the end, at least for me. So I loaded FLStudio and tried my best. I looked up some tutorials how to make 8-bit music and came up with a main theme for the game by just singing what I felt. Then tried my best to find a good sample and... somehow it worked out, I was happy with the results so then I proceeded to making some game sounds. That was even harded but tried to listen to real things and then copy it to the best of my possibility. Elephant turned out to be the hardest out of everything, but it was so much to tweak settings around and figuring out how to make it as good as I possibly can! I will definitely look up more tutorials and practice music creation cause it was sooooo much fun! Who knows, maybe I just found a new hobby?

4.Starting was hard, but ending was even harder. - And then while having fun, trying to put everything togheter it was already last few hours of jam and we still had a lot of beta testing, that my lovely girlfriend decided to help us out with. There were still so many sounds and then out of the blue I was also asked to draw few things we were missing (that was a first time for me as well  but I hope you like the mouse and elephant I drew) and clock was ticking. Stress was hitting hard, heartrate was going up and I was scared that we won't have enough time to finish up and all our effort will be pointless. Thankfully in the end everything worked out, we managned to push out final build, my girlfriend quickly tested it, I made last changed on the game page and there it was! All our work has come to an end and we successfully made a game in 72 hours

5.So how was it? - I loved it, it was a great experience! I had a chance to learn so many new skills that will come in handy during next jams and maybe outside of them as well. My biggest highlight was making a music! I want to keep doing it and make a better sounds next time and I'm glad that I could push my boundries and go outside of my comfort zone and try something new.

If you would like to try our game and listen to music I made, even tho it's nothing big I would be really happy! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/51/whats-the-rules Thanks for reading my little post about this wonderful experience and I hope you enjoy our game and hopefully next games if I will try my best during next jams! gj.PNG
