Candles

This was my entry for the LD #6 contest, “Light and Darkness”. In this small platform game, your goal is to avoid the rain drops and light up all the candles in each level.

Unfortunately, I didn’t finish the game in time, so you can’t actually complete a level (I spent too much time drawing the graphics).

The game was programmed in Delphi (using the DelphiX library) and I used Tile Studio for the graphics. You can find more screen shots and download the game (and source code) here.

Still not sure what to make

Five hours after waking up and finding out what the theme is, I still haven’t been able to come up with a good idea. I’m kind of surprised that so many people voted for “chain reaction”. Anyway, this is probably going to be some kind of puzzle/action game with bombs, so I started implementing some basic tile stuff.

Concert

Unfortunately I have to leave now, I’m playing the double bass in a concert tonight (with a symphony orchestra and choir). Of course I’ll be making a recording on minidisc, which might be useful for background music in my game :) .

Back again

I’m back from the concert, we played Beethoven, Brahms, Buxtehude, Weill and some others. Here are some pictures:

Awesome, hope to hear it in the game!

Overlapping tiles

Not much progress yet, but at least I have an idea what to make now. I’m using overlapping tiles:

Final entry, unfinished

Unfortunately, I didn’t have as much time as I had hoped today, so I wasn’t able to finish the game. However, it is partly playable, so I’m sending it in anyway.

(The source uses a modified version of TileMap.bmx, which I made last year and published on the Blitz site as a tutorial).

3/3 One of the best.. I like the b/w shading and the obvious pen shaders..

Not much time, again!

Somehow, the timing of these LD competitions is always bad for me (except for LD #6 so far). On Saturday I have a rehearsal day with an orchestra and on Sunday there is this yearly neighborhood fair (or whatever that’s called) and then I have a concert with a different orchestra. I still do plan to participate, I’ll probably have about 8 hours and perhaps some more if I can stay awake long enough.

Maybe some day we can also have date voting (like we have theme voting).

My desk

This time, I’m also going to send in photos of food and a time lapse video. I may as well concentrate on these categories, since I probably won’t have enough time to write a decent game. Anyway, here is a photo of my desk.

Good luck everyone!

Just woke up and saw that the theme is “minimalist”. I’ll start with some coffee and breakfast, then I’m off to a rehearsal day with the Nijmegen university orchestra, so I’ll have plenty of time to think before I start tonight.

Time to start working…

I’m just back from a rehearsal day with an orchestra, we played Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Mahler. I made recordings, but this isn’t minimal music so it’s not really usable. People brought their own sandwiches and later we ordered chinese.

Now I can start working on my game…

First screenshot

Last night I was able to spend about six hours on my game. This time I want to make a Flash game, so everyone can run it directly in their browsers. I’m programming it in haXe:

It’s going slowly, since I haven’t used haXe for quite a while.

This morning I had breakfast and went to the neighborhood fair which is held every year here. In half an hour I have to leave for a concert in Wageningen. I hope to still be able to make some kind of playable game when I’m back.

I’m back

I’m back from the concert, we played Beethoven’s well known 5th symphony (I made a little recording of the opening with my Zoom H2).

When I came home, I had supper right away. Now there is a little more than 8 hours remaining, so I have to start working hard!

Starting to become playable…

My flash game is now starting to become a bit playable. I spent way too long on a recursive algorithm to fill up the areas that turned out to be very very slow, but now I use a kind of floodfill instead. The goal of the game is to surround areas so that a picture appears. Now it still needs some enemies.

Final entry

Here is my final entry: download (start Game.html to play).

I managed to add some (minimal) music to the game during the last 15 minutes before the deadline!

Web game

I just uploaded my game so it can be played directly from your browser:

Play

EDIT: A minimalist game shouldn’t really need instructions, but (in case it isn’t clear what to do) the objective of the game is to clear the (minimalist) photos by surrounding areas, which you can do by drawing lines with the arrow keys. Don’t let the green balls touch the line you are drawing, also don’t touch it yourself. Once you have cleared 75% of the photo, you win the level. You have unlimited lives.

Custom library for haXe

I just released some base code for writing 2D games in haXe (using Tile Studio for graphics), which I’m planning to use if the theme is suitable for making a Flash game.

This might also be useful for anyone who wants to get started with creating web games in haXe. I’ve included information on how to install everything.

Breakfast

I just woke up and saw that the theme is “The Tower”. No idea what to make yet, but I’ll start with some breakfast: croissants and coffee.

First concept graphics

I’m going to make a platform game about climbing a huge tower, where each floor is a new level. I’m not sure how the gameplay will be, but here is my first little screen shot.

Lunch

I just made some pea-soup for lunch.
