Ludum Dare 59

You play the rhythm. The rhythm plays you.

Hi! I'm Yarcha, the game designer project https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/59/drumnice

At Ludum Dare 59, we decided to try something unusual: to merge a rhythm game with a dungeon crawler.

The result: - spells are cast through rhythm - between fights, you visit a shop and choose stronger spells - enemies are rock walruses that don’t forgive mistakes

This is our first time working with rhythm mechanics, but it already feels like something that could grow into much more.

Give it a try - and tell us where it hurts.

How did the idea of creating a rhythm game come about?

Psst. Psst. Yarcha here.

I'm jumping into your Ludum Dare 59 feed to tell you how our game was born... and to whine a little about what we didn't have time for 👀

Remember the meme about the penguin who gets separated from his flock and goes up the mountain—on his last walk? That story just kept popping into my head.

At first, it was all about drama: the penguin sees a signal at the top and thinks it's his missing sister. Sadness, cold, loneliness... you get the idea.

But the team looked at me and said, "Maybe we shouldn't suffer through the jam again?"

And then a better idea was born.

What if... we give the penguin drums?

Seriously. Just imagine a penguin climbing a mountain and beating out a rhythm. Sounds better already, right?

So we came to the final challenge: to make a rhythm game during the jam session.

Yes, the jam version was a bit rough around the edges—we can see that ourselves. But we carefully read the feedback, tweaked everything, and released an updated version that feels much better.

If you want to see what a sad penguin turns into when given drums, try it yourself 🥁
