Ludum Dare 37 December 9–12, 2016

Last chance to rate + Post Mortem.

Thank you to everybody that played our game and left a nice comment! We appreciate your feedback and we’re thrilled that you all seemed to enjoy it. Neither of us had the willpower for this Ludum Dare but we’re glad we did it, it was loads of fun!

What Did You Make?

How To Cope With Boredom & Loneliness – A Guide For The Isolated – A Documentary Filmmaker Simulator

(Play It Here)

So, our game is a create your own documentary kind of thing. You play as Nigel Wimble, hard hitting filmmaker. To complete the final episode of your series you must create a film about Harold, a man who has been grounded to his room for the past 30 years.

To do this you must examine items in his room and choose the ones that will elicit the best responses. You then sit back and watch the documentary unravel.

Our game is light on gameplay but we hoped it would be entertaining enough anyway.

How Did You Make it?

A few days before Ludum Dare we had briefly spoke about framing our main project as a mockumentary. We decided against it but thought maybe we could do something similar for Ludum Dare, depending on the theme. Once we saw the theme was One Room an idea popped up for a documentary based on someone who has been grounded to his bedroom for his entire adult life. It seemed like a daft scenario so went with it, as we usually do.

We created ten items of interest which when selected would trigger a short cutscene. We then had to tie the player chosen ones together with an intro and outro which would play once the player confirms their selection.

We added clues to the examinations and a point system based on how relevant the item is but there’s no winning or losing. You enjoy the scenes you’ve picked or you don’t!

Day One

@poffle

I always spend the first morning working on placeholder graphics with music on and a steady stream of tea. At the same time trying to work out what the game actually is. Once Rodo wakes up I bombard him with assets and bad ideas.

Rodo is in charge of scope and can be down right mean with it sometimes, so when I said we needed 10 fully voiced cutscenes I was surprised he went along with it. He even said yes to writing and singing a song too! I spend the rest of the day drawing and writing the examinations for the items.

@rodobodolfo

I always wake up the first morning with a massive list of bad and ridiculous ideas to reject. Mainly due to the fact that most of the time, they would take a lot of coding time to implement just to gain a few seconds of features.
This time, however, I woke up with only a really ridiculous but hilarious idea, and on top of that all the hard work would be on Poffle’s side, so it was a no-brainer for me.

I’ve been working on adding speech support on the Unity Adventure Framework for our Vic Raider Trailer so this seemed a perfect time to test it in a real project.

Day 1 for me was setting up the rooms on unity, defining actors, cut-scenes, hotspots. In short, making the game world playable.

2016-12-12 20_53_20-Jump List for Notepad

Day Two

@poffle

I like to do the writing on Day 2. I take my dogs for a walk in the morning and that seems to help with ideas opposed to staring at a blank text file. I came back and wrote the cutscene scripts and handed them over to Rodo. Then we had the monumental task of recording all the voices and processing the audio for lipsyncing. This went surprisingly well though. I recorded the lines in about an hour, Rodo processed it all and we had a playable build by the end of the night that was pretty funny and surprisingly low on bugs.

@rodobodolfo

I woke up with a lot of hilarious recorded lines to process. We had to process some lines before for the trailer, but now the amount of lines were a lot more, REAPER was a blessing for this task.
Essentially, I would open an objects speech line and then split it into multiple chunks of audio.

2017-01-02 10_44_16-Cortana

Then with the amazing batch/convert tool, I added all chunks and with the $track$itemnumber variables I create a consecutive sequence of audio clips.

Don’t forget to add the FX Chain!!

2017-01-02 10_48_22-Batch File_Item Converter

After that, we needed to add a suffix for all lines that will be dubbed.

Day Three

@poffle

Day three on a good Ludum Dare is spent on music and polish. On a bad one it can be 60% of your game which is what happened last time for us. This time it was a good one so it was mostly music and polish. There were a few more things we wanted to squeeze in but didn’t want to kill ourselves so polished what we had. I am pleased with what we managed to complete.

@rodobodolfo

Poffle broke all the lip-sync tags and almost had a nervous collapse. Hopefully he managed to re-tag every line!
Meanwhile I had the task of making the score system, the intro and outro scenes, post production effects and tie it all together.

The result is this guy making an awesome film.

ld37-d

What Went Wrong?

Nothing too harrowing aside from Rodo having a power cut. If we had more time we would have added an interview with Harold’s mother and extra intro/outro scenes. It was exhausting like every Ludum Dare but it went smoothly and never felt like a grind. It was a fun weekend and we look forward to the next!

The Finish line is approaching, want to play (vote?) some One Room One Bomb One Minute

Happy New Year everyone!

So we’re near the finish line for the ratings and until now all the commentaries i got was really constructive, interesting and also motivating. So thank you all for that.

oneroomonebomboneminutelogo-web

Regarding this i may want to continue working on the concept and see if i can get something more complete and challenging than this compo entry i’ve made.

I want to add more mechanics, create more levels, change the look and feel of the overall (maybe some flat design) and have some silly ideas about playing a dog instead of a bomb diffusal robot. Why not trying to go outside the “one room” theme in new levels.

Again thank you all for the motivation, 2017 will be my decisive year for game making, i feel it.

Play and rate my game right here, don’t forget the comments and come talk on twitter @Siryakko.

Hey guys! Can you help me?

Hey nice indie devs! Could you guys please vote my LD37 entry? Only need 6 more votes 😉
It wasn’t a good build, but we are working on the entire game based on it, with a lot more content and new gameplay! And your votes and feedback are our fuel to make it happen!

Thank you guys! \o/

During the ramp up of the LudumDare weekend I didn’t actually pay much attention to the themes I was voting on, or which was popular or not. I didn’t even take the top 20 list and try thinking of different ideas like I’ve done in the past. One Room was announced as the theme and immediately I was at a loss. Like normal everybody in irc complaining about the theme, so I just left that alone for the time.

Over the last year I’ve been playing more and more tabletop / boardgames and I guess the ‘success’ of my LD36 entry, Ancient Robots lured me into doing another tabletop like game. I mashed together the mechanics of Dungeon Roll with the theme of The Big Book of Madness which is our current favorite. How hard could it be, roll some dice to get things that can attack, have enemy types that match the dice to BE attacked, and some form of scoring.

Not quite that simple

The following morning I got onto making a SpellBook to define and contain the different effects, Fire, Water, Earth and Mind were the types I choose. The spellbook would randomize the contents at game start, and allow a spell to be clicked on/be used. Then created the HauntedRoom object which held all the baddies, skeleton, slimy ooze and goblins, each weak to a certain magic school and all weak to mind attacks. I couldn’t really put my finger on it, but this process took much longer than I expected it to.

It also lacked feedback, it was now Sunday morning sometime like 12 hours remaining, and the enemies just popped off screen. I couldn’t worry about that since I had to make a results, win/lose, screen and let the game restart and all. Still I was worried about the lack of feedback. With a few hours left I finally thought of a way to add some that wasn’t terribly time consuming and it actually went faster than expected – if only I had thought of it earlier.

20161211204613_screenshot

The feedback still wasn’t great, and it remains a bit difficult to understand what is happening. The most common complaint was not figure out what spells attacked which enemies the best. I thought color coding would help, green earth for instance will kill ALL green skeletons or 1 of any other type, same with the others (mind kills all of 1 type). However after watching a play-through, I found that the first few “hours” spent in the room really don’t show this very well since there are only 1-3 enemies and randomly chosen so there is no feedback/exploration of the spells until at least day 3 or 4 where the game is about over.

Also the only way to win is to leave the room by choice, something a lot of people seemed to miss, but again that is from my lack of feedback to them.

Wrapping it up:

I think the theme of the game really resonated with me, being a magic student and being dared to enter and remain in the schools haunted room, a room teachers have placed off limits to all students, and attempting to stay in as long as possible while still coming out alive. Threats increasing with each hour passed.

You can play and rate Haunted Room here.

*I really could use some extra ratings as I’m not such a cool kid this time around, I’ve been afk since the event doing some car work that is still incomplete. I’d really like to be ranked so if you could spare a few minutes I’d appreciate it!

That was great…

This was a good LD, we made a game that we like, Jox has surpassed for the graphics, and for the first time we have MUSIC oh yeah this is so cool.

Because of some balancing with my feet au 1:30 am, the game is pretty hard, but we made a first version of a post mortem. A second version will come soon.

The major problem is that I lost the internet during nearly all the judging time, so maybe we will not have ranking. Thanks to Orange and SFR.

My Favorite LD37 Games

favoriteLD

With the final hours of LD37 coming to a close (10 hours left while I was writing this) I figured I’d recap some of my favorite games. This list is in no way a full look at all the awesome Ludum Dare games. Somewhere around 1,500 games were created but I only managed to play around 50. So in no particular order here are my favorite games of Ludum Dare 37.

Room-Fate

Room-Fate title screen

This game is simply beautiful. Room-Fate is an adventure game where you get a glimpse inside the life of an individual living in a small room. The game uses clever focus to lead you through the many ups and downs of this person’s life while letting you interpret what has really happened. I love the ascetic and atmosphere this game creates. I’m not entirely sure why but I felt this game was very emotional without saying a lot.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=8002.

Death Room

Death Room title scree

Death room is a game where you control a tire and run over alien bugs. The art in this game is very polished and crisp. What I liked most about it was the feeling of controlling the wheel. It has weight and an unstableness about it that makes the controls feel very solid.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=26722.

0.25

0.25 gameplay preview

0.25 is a very weird title that matches the game perfectly. This game is a surreal first person puzzle game in which the room you start in expands and grows as you play. There seemed to be a lot of thought put into the puzzles and ideas in the game. The art style is a blend of spacey colors that almost give you a since of vertigo in some situations. This is one game I highly recommend playing.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=120292.

Starlight

Starlight gameplay preview

Starlight has you waking up in a mysterious spaceship that seems to be broken down. The ship seems to have a feeling of abandonment as you boot up the old computer. Starlight is a first person adventure game where you search the environment to solve puzzles and uncover what has happened. It tells a nice story with a great twist at the end.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=15315.

Dungeon Slimes

Dungeon Slimes title screen

I recommend this game solely on the fun and witty story. Dungeon Slimes is a basic hack-n-slash but is filled with great writing. You’ll want to play this game to the end just to see all the great story bits hidden inside.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=124059.

Cozy Christmas Village

Cozy Chirstmas Village game play preview

This could very well be my favorite game of the Ludum Dare. It’s so Zen and addicting that I ended up playing it for at least an hour. Cozy Christmas Village is a city building game where you use toy pieces on a table top to build your village. Seeing your wonderful pixel village become populated with tiny figures is super fun. I highly recommend this game.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=45848.

Fish

Fish game play preview

Fish is probably the most innovative puzzle game I saw in this jam. You swipe fish that interact in different ways to lead your character out of the water. I enjoy the simple mechanics of this and would love to see a full mobile release of it.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=96180.

Rent for 30 seconds

Rent for 30 seconds title screen

Rent for 30 seconds is a flat building game where you play as the land lord of a small little rest area. You need to balance the fun, food, and comfort of your guests to keep the business going. This is a fun little game that reminds me of a quick version of Prison Architect.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=111242.

Smallest Dungeon

Smallest Dungeon title screen

The Smallest Dungeon has the best sound track I’ve heard this jam. You control the powers of 4 characters as they fight in a dungeon. It has a fun upgrade system. While the game play isn’t the strongest this game is worth a play for the music alone.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=15559.

Me, Myself And The Room

Me, Myself And The Room title screen

Me, Myself And The Room merges the movement of Myst and the writing of Stanley Parable in a wonderful experience. As you navigate the lo-fi film grain room the narrator tells you about their life and meaning of the room. There are many funny moments and 4th wall breaking interactions that give this game so much personality. I would fully enjoy a complete game is this style.

You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=24959.

While those were my favorite entries I’ve played this jam there were a lot that I still enjoyed. Here are a few honorable mentions from this Ludum Dare.

Ludum Dare 37 produced some great games. And if you have the time you should check out my entry. You can play it at http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-37/?action=preview&uid=23711 and read the postmortem I wrote at CodyClaborn.me.

Post Compo Work

So after a stale period in my game development activity, I finished the post-compo version of my game, The Pit! If you have already played my game, feel free to try it out!

blah

If you haven’t played it yet, and intend on rating it, please don’t play the post-compo version until after you’ve played and rated the original version here on the LudumDare website

Basically, I had to make a post on r/webgames so get some real feedback, as I feel that everyone around here is too nice due to the fear of accidentally offending someone which could effect ratings on their game, which is understandable. I found myself doing that a bit also. Anyway basically everyone said the controls were confusing, so I tried to focus on that.

Changes:

  • Added custom key binding
  • Changed build functionality, now you can build through blocks in your path,
  • Added the ability to build downward, bumping the block below you even lower
  • Removed excessive upward momentum after finished building (makes changing directions while building much quicker)
  • Re-balanced enemies, made them slower, easier to trap
  • Made it so you couldn’t build a block directly on top of an enemy
  • Attack is now more effective, knocking enemies black further

Enjoy!

All of you guys’ games that I’ve played are great in their own way and you should all be very proud of yourself!!

Thanks

cave_in

Thank you to everyone that played our game and voted. We hope you enjoyed it. This was our first Ludum Dare and we had a blast.

We are continuing to work on our game, Cave In. You can find the full version here: https://cave-in.gomix.me/

It is still in progress, but will eventually have a high score list and replays. It also has a few new mechanics that weren’t in the LD version. If you enjoyed the game and want to play it again or if you haven’t played it yet, we’d love it if you’d check it out.

Once again, Thanks.

BreakAround PostMortem/Last Chance To Play+Rate Plus More!!

It’s a bit extremely last minute seeing as there’s only a few hours left until judging ends but I’ve just uploaded the post-mortem for my LD37 entry BreakAround which you can view by heading down to my blog.

In other news, I will be doing a livestream on my Twitch channel at around 9/10pm-ish GMT where I will be (yup, you guessed it) playing and rating some of your Ludum Dare entries. If you would like me to play/rate your game during the stream, you can do so either by filling in my small Google Form or leaving a comment when you play/rate my game so I can check it out (or alternatively just leave a comment here) otherwise when the stream does go live, feel free to send your games in the chat.

Take care folks!

Thank you all for such a great Ludum Dare!

I gotta say this Ludum has been one of the best so far for me. (Even though it’s only my second one) Alot of people played my game compared to my last game (Seriously like 6 times as many people). I’ve learned alot from this jam. And I appreciate the mountain of feedback you guys have given me.  I’ve had 3 YouTubers play my game and even some streamers.

Two things really stood out.

1: How motivated you can get when there’s 3 hours left in the jam (Seriously I got more content in those 3 hours than I did the first day).

2: The community.

What do I mean by community? Well, what do ya think? The out-pour of feedback, and the downloads and ratings adding up everyday, I even got a guy on twitter who said I inspired him to participate in the next jam! it’s just a fantastic feeling.

Overall, I think 2017 is gonna be a great year for game development. You all ignited a fire of passion inside me, and Intend to use it. Again, thank you all so much, and I hope to see you in the next JAM!

Cheers,

FisherG.

It is time!
Soon, we’ll get to see how we all did well for this Ludum Dare!

This one was my 8th participation, and actually my favorite one!
I’m really proud of the little game we managed to do with my team.

I gave more than 100 votes, and I was able to try soooo many great creations. It’s ending and I already can’t wait to be in April for the 38th.
I’ll never be enough thanksful to the LudumDare for letting this happen.

If you’re still voting for some games, you can try our entry here !

You can also watch those little videos showing the 4 levels of the game!

You can obviously vote and do feedback just by watching the video, it still can help us!
Don’t hesitate to comment to. Thank you =)

And again, thank you to the LD, to Mike, and to all of you. :)

6 MORE MINUTES!!
