Chickenarchy's results!

Chickenarchy was my 2nd Ludum Dare entry. My results are a bit better than last time (:

Chickenarchy.png ChickenarchyResults.png

Yet, unfortunately, Chickenarchy hasn't been a super successful entry. I was away and had very little time to spend on game creation. I ran out of time, and the project is filled with various issues (collision and trigger glitches, inconvenient camera movement, lack of sound effects, etc).

But I still managed to create something, and some people actually enjoyed the overall atmosphere, graphics, and humour of the game :D (I got 11th in humour haha) So I'm still proud of what I made. Hopefully I will improve myself next time! Anyway once again Ludum Dare taught me a lot, and makes a superman out of me for a weekend :D

Timelapse!

Post-mortem time !

So, now that the results are in, it’s time to do a post mortem ! Yey !

Most important thing

First things and most important things first, I want to thank everyone who played my game, and even more important, everyone who left feedback on my game. This is more important than people may think, because every time I go to the page of my game, it lights my heart to see all the nice comments. So thank you everyone who commented, I did not dare answer the comments to avoid cluttering the page or sounding bragging/humble/clunky/etc., or just by shyness, I don’t know. But seriously, even months after the ludum dare, I like to go back to my games review to re-read the commentary, it helps me get through the hard time. So thank you, your kind comments are really important to me.

Results

Second things, my game is playable here ; https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/immortals-game, I recommend playing it before reading this post mortem to avoid spoiler, but do as you please, I won’t force you ^^ I was really surprised by the results, I knew it would be way be way better than my previous entries based on the comments, but I was not expecting such good results : 1st in fun, and 4th overall (and in humour, and well in the other categories; in the compo category) ! I'm really happy ! :D temp.png

By the power of friendship !

For this edition, I went to a friend’s apartment for the weekend, and even though we were working on different titles (it is the solo compo after all), this allowed us to eat together, go for walks, and just keep a kinda healthy lifestyle for the weekend, which is more important than you may think : going outside and still having social interaction is a nice way to take breaks and stay productive over the weekend. You can play his game here if you want https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/biomass. So if you have a group of friends that want to participate in the ludum dare, why not make a compo group? That way, you can have friends, have feedback on your game, while still working solo and keeping your independence :D

Use the engine/language of your heart

For the jams, I don’t use unity or any other game frameworks. I just do it in pure dirty javascript. This may seems weird or stupid, but this is the language I am the fastest with (for game making). I do not code the best in it, but it is so fast to get something playable. I know a lot of people use unity in the LD, and this is fine, it is a really good engine, but I would recommend to people to not just use it because all the other people are using it, but to use it because you want to : I spent multiple hours trying to learn it and having the impression to fight against the engine, before I understood it was not meant for my coding style, and just accepted that I would be better with a lower level framework. So, when choosing what technologies to use for the ludum dare, choose the one you prefer, the one you know, or want to learn, and not the one everyone’s using. Even in pure javascript, you do not lose much time compared to the engines if you know it well enough. So have fun using your engine/language, and choose according to your taste, not according to what everyone else is using ! (but use unity if you like, as I said it is a really good engine)

Theme and level design

[This section has minor spoiler to finish the game, so I recommend playing it before reading this section. But again, do as you please, I won’t judge you] This theme did not exactly inspired me at first. Making a stock market exchanging life? trading life for upgrade? At the end, I settled on the idea of dying originally to get money; I wanted to make a metroidvania since a long time, and it was the good moment to do it ! I started by making a list of the possible death idea, and a rough sketch of the level 20190527_194701.jpg ; as you can see, I had a few more death than implemented, but I did not had time to implement them, and I though they weren’t as fun or cool as the other. I also wanted for the level design to show the player what he must do at all time, and to try to not have him stuck; that’s why you must not unlock all death to get to the end, and a lot of interactive element/possible death are visible at the start, like the laser or the water, that the player understand will be useful later, and so when they finish exploring without item, they try to interact with those elements. In the end, the cost of the items was a bit improvised, I just knew that I wanted the player to use all the items, but to get to the exit without the bombs (so they would need to take the long road). So in the end, I think my game had a good combination of reflexion and platforming, enough to have challenge and be fun, and easy enough to avoid being stuck, which is what you want in game jams : an hardcore game will not be enjoyable by everyone, because not everyone is an hardcore gamer. You can if you want, but not everyone will enjoy your game (and this is fine ! Not all games appeal to all people)

Polish

This time, I finished my game quite in advance : after 36 hours, I had a game playable and everything was done ! Except for polish : this is the thing I do at the end, when the gameplay is finished. And this time, I realised the enormous difference it makes when you polish the game : I added the character animation for the jumps, lots of particles effect, screen shake for the bombs, transitions for dying/restarting, better dialogs with typewritting effects, and even updated from 30 to 60 fps (yes, I realised I locked it at 30 fps at that moment, so I had to update all the physic engine to account for the doubled framerate). And holy moly, it changed a lot how fun the game was. It felt more alive, and just better ! So I recommend to anyone, polish your game ! The fun comes not only from the gameplay, but also from the polish, feedback and “juice” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=216_5nu4aVQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJdEqssNZ-U . So to make a fun game, consider keeping a few hours to polish it and playtest it.

Conclusion

For the next compo, I will probably go with something totally different, maybe a 3d game using an engine and not in vanillajs, because I know that if I make a worse game the next time, I will only have me to blame, and if I use another tool, I will be able blame it on my learning ! So it is a win-win situation :D This was a pretty amazing ludum dare for me, the best I made and probably the best results I will make, and thank you all for your comments, rating, annd to reading up to this point !

TL;DR : Thank you, Doing the compo with a friend (on different game) is fun, do not use unity just because everyone else is using it, think a bit about your level design, and polishing your game makes it more fun to play

Some data about lifeless

Here's an infographic showing some of the data from our valuable players.

Of course, during the rating period, the times were rough, so some of the players' data actually didn't reach us, so the data is made out from what we have (cca 50ish plays).

We want to thank all for their valuable time spent on playing this game, even those who didn't reach the end of the game. Which is a bummer because if they did, we would have won  hahaha...

You can still play the game if you are interested, although this infographic is kind of a spoiler.

In any case, without further ado, the game Lifeless in words and numbers:

LifelessInfographics.png

Disclaimer. We did not collect any personal or identifiable data. Here's the actual process: 1. Generate a random GUID when the game starts. 2. Send the data along with that GUID.

That's all. We just have random GUIDs with a number of values (such as game duration on particular screen).

We will also soon scrap all the data anyway.

"Dare" album updated with "Cat Outta Hell"

I've updated my "Dare" album on Bandcamp with the music from our LD44 entry, Cat Outta Hell. The album contains music I've written for each of the Ludum Dare Compos and Jams I've participated in over the years, and I update it regularly with new tracks.

The LD Community is Awesome!!

Just wanted to share this great experience from the LD scene.

There's one LD crew that makes their Jam games in an ongoing series called "Nuclear Arms". The games keep pushing the story along, and all star the same character, Craig Killbane. If you haven't checked these games out, you should! They're a ton of fun and they just keep getting better.

This team obviously has a really good time going over the top with their crazy games, so I have a little fun going over the top with the crazy reviews I leave for them.

After this last LD, one of them reached out and asked what my home address was...

And look what just arrived in the mail!

CraigKillbaneInPerson-small.jpg

Thanks to the Nuclear Arms team for the great games and the very cool special delivery!! Logicon211 (@logicon211), Bodom4ever (@bodom4ever), volt450 (@volt450), yoshiwara (@yoshiwara), FTL_Sloth (@ftl-sloth), BaronB (@baronb), and Amanda Gallant (@amanda-gallant)

Looking forward to #8.

To anyone else curious about the games, there's a full list of all 7 of them, here: https://ldjam.com/users/logicon211

Our Ludum Dare 42 game has a steam page and demo!

Last August we made Backspace Bouken, a typing dungeon crawler (the theme was "running out of space"). It scored 52nd overall for LD42, so we ended up working on it a lot more and we now have a Steam page for it, a trailer to show, and a new demo. We've added a lot since that LD, and we'll continue to until it releases this year :)

Memorandum - Developer’s Commentary & Code Review

Ever wondered what a developer wanted to get across with their game, or how they structured their source code to achieve what they set out to do? Here's my attempt at solving the mysteries of what I intended to do and how it turned out in the end:

Developer’s Commentary of my game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Umq36KAWfMc

In-depth code review of my game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzOEbahkATQ

Time Travelling Navy Seal Ninja Warrior - Dev log / update

For the past 3 months, I've been developing what will become my first commercially available video game. In the summer of 2018, a friend and I participated in Ludum Dare where we experimented with a VR project. The Man Of Mail was only playable on Oculus, and was terribly flawed and broken, but I fell in love with VR development because a simple game made in 16 hours turned in to one of my favorite games I had developed up until that point.

On March 20 2019 I began development on a light hearted VR game with climbing and shooting mechanics. The idea was to travel back in time and use parkour and guns to defeat enemies. Time Travelling Navy Seal Ninja Warrior was born. As I posted more and more update videos to youtube, reddit, and this site, I managed to gain a humble fan base who I communicated with on Discord. It was (and is) incredible to have people interested in and enjoying my work. But it's also terrifying. When I released the Pre-Alpha, I was terrified that people would be dissapointed. Many of them were. But the fact that they stuck around and gave feedback was amazing! within a month, so many changes were made that the alpha had very positive feedback.

Now that I'm on the beta build, people are loving the game. It's not flawless of course, but the people who've played praise the game. A few hardcore fans have played the game too many times to count, which is an incredible feeling. One person even made a fan trailer!

I've been working hard every day to make the best game that I can. I still have over a month left of development before release, but I'm very proud of what I've done so far. Here is the goofy trailer I made, along with a link to the steam page and a playlist of development progress.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and happy game making! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqrqKuKtv2U

A Post Jam Update

Whew, only 97 days left until Ludum Dare 45!

We created a post jam update for our game, as a way to look back to LD44.

I usually get a bit burnt out after a game jam so it was nice to get back to the project afterwards, without the time pressure.

*I'll post this as a challenge to others as well. *

*If you planned on continue working on your LD44 game but haven't got started yet; DO IT! :smiley_cat: *

*And please share the updates here. *

For those who want to try our game, you can find it here: https://01f0.itch.io/gainz-4-cash

The beat system was replaced with a system that was more predictable and fun:

STR!PES under Unity2019.1

My entry for the 44th LudumDare has been improved and released using Unity 2019.1 - and you can dowmload it for free on itch.io platform. STR!PES is a procedural generation game using code (and only code) - no sprite, no prefab, no physics, no implicite value (excepted a radius PI). 17 batches in inspector - really smooth. AKJ Tournament: Let's compete on your jam entry!

Alakajam! is about to start a competition where we won't make jam games, but play and compete on them!

2019-07-11 10em31/em13-banner.png

The tournament

For two weeks, everyone is invited to play and post high scores on a selection of games, using screenshots as proof. Players can then earn points according to their ranking (see below), climb a leaderboard and try to win the tournament :tophat: (see this as an example!)

CvSqPvV.jpg

(Before you ask, screenshots can be faked indeed, but we haven't had any cheating issues so far. There's no prize any way, just the fun of competing on jam games and making their authors cry by finding glitches )

How to submit your game

Any jam game that supports high scores in one way or another can qualify. We prefer web games but cross-platform desktop games are fine too. All you need to submit is to:

1. Create your jam page on the Alakajam! website

Once logged in, go to your user profile and the "My entries" section to create a game by hand (or through the importing tool).

2. Submit your game here

The Alakajam team will then pick 6 games to play for the next two weeks. See you there!

"Siege Game" got its WIP title replaced. Let me introduce: Stonefall

My voxel based multiplayer shooter reached a milestone: its WIP title got replaced finally. Stonefall is an indie first person shooter game, made in Unity3D, with buildings, destruction, siege engines, and many more.

I plan on making multiple gamemodes, each of them with a twist from other genres, and also community made gamemodes as well, thus increasing the fun factor of the game :)

Here's a video about the upcoming months, and feel free to check out the previous devlogs for more info 🙂

HAVE A GREAT DAY/NIGHT!

My first Steam game was released a week ago - only today 25% off launch :)

Hi, so last week i released my game where i worked some years on.

Balloon Girl is flying platform adventure where you can control a girl, a boy, a baby or a dog.

Ever seen a game where a baby can fall in spikes ? well thats balloon girl :D)

Screen2.PNG

Here is the link to the steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1011440/Balloon_Girl/

I hope you like it :)

In the meanwhile i start to work on my Ludum Dare "Hyper Skater" Entry to make a full game out of it.

DJAM #2(By the LD Discord 2800+ Members)

FCsGBn.png

We(ieyfo#3416 & Dr Zachary Smith#9260) host the Ludum Dare discord with over 2800 members and growing, lots of great people and a wonderful community. Theme voting/slaughter and suggestionswill be handled through the Ludum Dare server.

The discord was made back in LD36 about 2 years ago. This event was created to fill the gap between Ludum dare's given they have switch to 2 times a year. So we will host 2 a year also to supplement this. You can find more info on the Discord as well as entering by submitting a theme.

Its a 48 hour event and the theme suggestion/voting will go on this month.

We released a decent postjam version of They Ran Out Of Mana

Hi we proudly announce that we worked on an improved version of our last LD game. It took a while because life and stuff but it is finally here:

The Funky AI version!

Not having music was the biggest complain of all reviewers. Also some people pointed out that it would be cool if the enemy was smarter.

This version adds music, sounds, visual feedback and an AI that will make the game a bit more challenging without loosing its puzzle feel.

Play it here! https://sergimontana.itch.io/they-ran-out-of-mana

Starting a post-jam version of an old entry!

So, after ten thousand years(! Ok, not that much...) I finally decided to make the post-jam version of my LD35 entry, Shape Magnet! It's still in very early stages, but I want to share it since the beginning, as well as document my process through a weekly devlog.

cover.png

It's a very simple game, but it will expand for more interesting and complex scenarios. Using simple electric rules, the player can change its state to positive and negative, and navigate through the level to reach a portal. Every object also has a state and will be affected by the player. Touch something, and the player dies!

If it sounds interesting feel free to follow it here, and any feedback is very welcome~

Suggestion for Itch.io to use the same Karma system that we have here

I think that the karma system that we have over here is very good, it would be awesome to be able to use the same system for other jams, like ld mini jams for example. So I`ve created a thread on itch.io community suggesting just that: https://itch.io/t/527869/karma-system-for-the-game-jams

it would be nice to have your support over there through comments or just liking the thread to increase the odds of having this awesome system be used across multiple jams.

Climate Change Jam: 7 days for a game with an impact!

This week-end, the Climate Change Jam (10-18 August) is starting on Alakajam. Hosted by indie developer RatKing, the goal is to engage with the hot topic of climate change and make a game out of it!

The focus here is not on competition but rather to try and make something with an impact - which means it doesn't even have to be a game. You are also free to choose your own start time and jam duration according to your availabilities.

Village of Sacrifice - Remake

screenem2000x600/em2019-08-17_12-46-11.png

After quite some time now (9 month) I found a cool graphics designer and musician who helped me remake my game for the Ludum Dare 43 last year. If anybody wants to check it out, here is the link:

https://firetotemgames.itch.io/village-of-sacrifice-remake

Here is a small comparison between the graphics I was able to create within 48h and what a real graphics designer can create

Decided to release a new post-jam in-dev demo for Animancy :D

Better late than ever, eh? Cover.png

My LD44 game, Animancy (Originally named Animancia) did surprisingly well, and I wanted to follow it up with an update as soon as possible, but got caught up in development and never did. Well, until now!

You can check out the new version here!

Keep in mind that his is still a very early and very rough version - a lot of essential stuff is missing, and I'm still working on crucial game mechanics (like random generation), but still, I added quite a lot of stuff I'm proud of since the Jam version, as well as fixed a lot of its issues, and I really wanted to share my progress :3

I will probably make the next update once I have fixed all the issues with random generation and added enough rooms for it to feel interesting. In the meantime, if you care about this game and want to see more frequent (smaller) updates, you follow be on my Twitter!

Major update to ZzFX - Zuper Zmall Zeeded Zound Zynth

Howdy everyone, I've just finished up a massive rewrite of zzfx.

http://zzfx.3d2k.com

https://github.com/KilledByAPixel/ZzFX

This is a JavaScript sound effect generator similar to bfxr but a little simpler. The really cool part if you use this, you don't need to mess with wave files at all. Just a play seeded sounds with a simple function call like, ZZFX.z(6)!

The browser has had a major upgrade also and is much more user friendly. There options to lock, reset and mutate parameters. You can even save out the sound as a wave file!

ZzFX Features

  • Tiny synth engine with 9 controllable parameters.
  • Small code footprint for full version and the micro version is under 500 bytes!
  • Can produce a wide variety of sound effect types.
  • Seeded sounds can be played with a tiny function call, ex: ZZFX.z(6)
  • Seeded sound paramerters can be overridden, ex: ZZFX.z(26,{frequency:600})
  • Random number generator ZZFX.R can be used in place of Math.random().
  • Use ZZFX.M to make music notes, ex: ZZFX.m(440, 7) // 7 semitons above 440hz (A4)

ZzFX UI Features

  • Generate random sounds from seed.
  • Stores sounds in list with local storage persistence.
  • Parameters can be modified for more control.
  • Lock, reset and mutate buttons for each parameter.
  • Displays image of sound wave when played.
  • Sounds can be download as a wave file.
  • Mark sounds as favorites to keep them from being cleared.
  • List of sounds can be exported and imported.

Here's the latest version of the ZzFXmicro JavaScript code you can use directly!

// ZzFXmicro - Zuper Zmall Zound Zynth - MIT License - Copyright 2019 Frank Force zzfx_v=.5;zzfx_x=new AudioContext;zzfx=(e,f,a,b=1,d=.1,g=0,h=0,k=0,l=0)=>{let S=44100,P=Math.PI;a*=2*P/S;a*=1+f*(2*Math.random()-1);g*=1E3*P/(S**2);b=0<b?S*(10<b?10:b)|0:1;d*=b|0;k*=2*P/S;l*=P;f=[];for(var m=0,n=0,c=0;c<b;++c)f[c]=e*zzfx_v*Math.cos(m*a*Math.cos(n*k+l))*(c<d?c/d:1-(c-d)/(b-d)),m+=1+h*(2*Math.random()-1),n+=1+h*(2*Math.random()-1),a+=g;e=zzfx_x.createBuffer(1,b,S);a=zzfx_x.createBufferSource();e.getChannelData(0).set(f);a.buffer=e;a.connect(zzfx_x.destination);a.start();return a}

Ludum Dare themes: Ld themes.PNG

Slaughter them all!

OK, now it is my turn to show my results of active themes slaughtering.

1.png

What can I say? I've found some interesting themes, however, it's was challenging because I tried to choose topics which don't have any obvious solutions and can be used in as many game genres as possible.

Colours matter

If you want to be efficient in your work, make your workplace facilitated for you. What's why I've spent some time changing my Gamemaker 2 appearance. I hope these changes would be useful for somebody.

  1. I installed a new colour theme - VS Dark Blue.

  2. I changed my default font on Monoid. If you don't like it, you can try to use Fira code.

  3. I made some alterations to a colour palette of a GML text editor in order to make some parts of code look more distinctive.

THE HYPE IS REAL

Put your hands in the air if you look forward to LD as much as you used to to Christmas when you were a kid. I know I'm not alone here.

I'm considering doing a story-wise "sequel" of previous LD's 'passion of a peasant'. The story, and especially the plot were idiotic AF, but I had lot of fun making it, so why not...

I'm in!

Ludum Dare has probably become the most important regular event. It's like christmas! ...except more sleep-deprived. Speaking of sleep deprivation, I decided that I'll shake things up a bit this time and will not try to pull any all-nighters. Instead, I will stick to my regular schedule, get 7 hours of sleep, and even keep going to the gym on jam days. Who knows, maybe I will come up with some better game concepts while lifting, lol?

Long story short, I'll try to not kill myself this time. Also, I'll try making something actually complete, and not a prototype, since I am currently still working on Animancy, the game I started making for LD44 that did surprisingly well. Btw, if you care, you can try an updated demo of it with some cool stuff added.

Also, here are my votes: ld45_themes.png

And, just for fun, the themes I submitted myself :D ld45emtheme/emsuggestions.png None of them made the cut, but eh, they weren't that great anyway.

GL&HF to everyone!

Some afterthoughts and observations

My moody little game Tabula Rasa takes place inside a notebook.

cut4.gif

I thought I'd present the level-map if anyone happens to be interested.

Level Map 7.png

It's surprisingly simple when you look at it zoomed out.

I guess most of the challenge comes from the eccentric controls, and the fact that half of your view is obscured by the other notebook page working as a HUD.

After removing the pages and testing the gameplay against a black backround, I thought it also looks kinda cool (and of course it gets easier because you can see further ahead). The notebook-border is surely a strong stylistic/thematic motif, but one could argue it comes at the expense of the gameplay.

If I ever go about releasing a post-mortem version, I think it would be nice to add the player a choice to turn the "notebook-view" on/off at will, along with other tweaks and additions.

Tabula Rasa

If you haven't tried it yet, go give it a shot!

Thanks for playing and voting

Thanks to all who played and voted my little game. I'm quiet happy with the result. Compared to the last time I could improve in all categories.

One last question: Are the rankings split into Compo and Jam or are these over-all-rankings?

Another Year. Another Slaughter

Once again I have done my civic duty and slaughtered many, many, many, themes. This year I found myself drawn to themes that where a single word or a simple concept. ThemeSalughter.png Its funny to say considering how few themes I voted yes on but this was a pretty good list of themes this year.

Compo Complete!

Diminutive Dungeon is a procedural puzzle game about two tiny heroes exploring a tiny dungeon.

dungeon.png

I thought the compo went really well this time - although I wish I had time to add sound effects. I tested out a few designs (including a solo hero in a 3x3 dungeon!) but the version with two heroes turned out to be more interesting - and as a bonus, my game now supports couch co-op!

You got this.

I like the theme, even though I voted against it. I'm excited to see what folks come up with.
