LD18 August 20–23, 2010

I suppose this was only to be expected.

My game, with less than two hours till the end of LD48, has terrible balance issues. It would take much more time than I have to fix. I’m going to package up what I have, and send it out into the wild. I suppose there’s not much I can do.
I had a great first compo though.

I’M FINALLY DONE

SO. TIRED. D:

Anyway, check it out here:

I’ll check out the rest of your guys entries in a couple hours when I’m done recuperating.

unfinished playable :3

Unfortunately I couldn’t get any time off work so I had to cut my dev time a little short. I’m hoping to work on it a bit tomorrow for the Jam, but for now, this is all I have – it’s very nearly a game! To be added: sfx, lives, game over, and some other tweaks.

Arrow keys – left/right/up. Avoid bad things and collect strawberries. The bull kills the ghosts/you (don’t worry it kind of makes sense in-game!)

Any feed back welcome!

Wow, very well done graphics and animations and the gameplay is not bad at all, it just lacks content.

Holy crap, this is great! I didn’t expect anything this finished or polished, it’s a shame you couldn’t quite wrap it up. Really clever gameplay take on the theme too. Congratulations!

The animation is awesome! Very polished. I particularly like the ghosts :)

Awesome graphics and animations, very polished!!

Say hello to my little friend

The player now has a skeleton companion and clicking him will let the player control him with the mage on AI. The peasants seem way too weak now.

Lich3

Still lots more to do so this will end up being a jam game. Maybe I’ll have time to fix the sound library compilation or find a new sound library.

Pre-Post-Mortem

so I got my things together. (already found some small things i overlooked, but atleast no bugs :D)

Here are my results:

This game wins!

The Mastermind clone (enter 4/5-digit security code) needs some thinking, but i’ve found a nice way to do it quickly and nicely (with fast typing).

Finished!!

Well, that was interesting :)

My first Ludum Dare but surely not my last. It’s been more fun, more rewarding and a lot tougher than I expected. I have awesome amounts of respect for anyone else who completed their entry, particularly if they got everything in it that they intended.

I’ve also ended up making a completely different game from what I had in mind on completely different tech. I had been planning to use jMonkeyEngine with Blender for 3D but none of the 3D game ideas I had really fitted the theme.

Unfortunately, the game has no sound :( I simply ran out of time. If I had worked ridiculous hours, I might have got sound in, but I might not have finished the gameplay or got all the bugs out of it.

well not done, but i can’t work on it any longer. SLEEP TIME :)

compo page here.

i didn’t get up to adding lots of things i planned, or spending any time on sound. i quite like it though, might have to keep working on it after LD..

I’m so not going to finish …. :(

Smores Attack Post Mortem

I am pretty happy with how Smores Attack came out in the end, although it is not as fully featured as I had hoped.  With my first LD done, now I understand the basic issues I am likely to face making an applet game.  I have made a bunch of games before, but I hadn’t made a sprite-based, flash-looking applet game in a while, and dealing with the initial graphics setup in Java took the vast majority of my time, effort, and motivation to get through.  I had to throw away 2-3 attempts at getting the sprites to render correctly, but finally I achieved success.

Once I had that done, making the game itself was pretty easy and fun.  I can see why so many people start with frameworks now, although I think it is really rewarding to not start with one because then my game doesn’t have all this other overhead that it doesn’t need (I’m sure it’s not as optimized as I could make it anyhow, but still it’s pretty small for what it is).  The background color change was the smartest move… the characters really pop off the screen with the blue background vs. red.  My time lapse shows the heavy editing necessary to draw the animations, many of which I didn’t have time to implement.

Nearly done!

Oh crap. It’s actually nearly finished. (ish).

I’m just adding another level.

Un-success

Alas, it was not to be. With 1 hour and 23 minutes remaining I see no chance to turn this into something playable.

LD18 failure

Perhaps if I had spent more time implementing gameplay instead of thinking about it…

Oh, and it’s hard to see in the screenshot, but there’s an accompanying laser sound made with SFXR. To everyone still working: “Use it. Now.”

Sorry to post this here but I didn’t know how else to reach you:

Space Garbage Recycling!

I finished my game with plenty of remaining time (about 5 hours ago), and I’m pretty proud of it! It was my first time, both on Ludum Dare and completing a game – I’ve started a lot of things that never became something.

Check out my entry!

I also did a timelapse I’ve just uploaded. It’s the whole thing, no cuts, except some missing time at the beggining and sleep time. Check it out here!

The game is pretty simple, just some Collection’s, some loops, and some checks. Collision detection is distance-based, everything follows some regular patterns: positions, speeds, rotations and speed rotations. Even being a really bad code (just check it out), it was simple enough to add things!

I think I actually can strip out some code of the game and, with some polishing, make a really simple game framework for the next LD!

As I said, this was my first LD, and it has been fun! I learnt some things, I’ve gained self-confidence, and I’ve just realized I can actually make a game, even without much time, which is great!

Let’s see if my game is good for you guys too!

Done All I Can

Well I just uploaded my entry, but it was grossly unfinished as the ending will show. I’ll sort out my timelapse tomorrow and maybe write a post-mortem. I had fun, but I don’t think I’ll be finishing this game any time soon. The code is pretty clean and all, but the game itself just doesn’t do much for me. Probably because it doesn’t do much at all 😉

Alpha Channel is go!

Well, I finally went and did it: I entered Ludum Dare! Alpha Channel didn’t exist 48 hours ago; now it does!

alpha_channel_04

I wisely kept it simple and actually felt I “finished” it. Could do with difficultly levels and an intro screen, but other than that, it is actually a game!

High scores gladly collected! Who has the stamina to get past level 9999 and roll the clock?

Timelapse time!

This is my timelapse video from the making of my entry, “Rotate!”. It was made with an application of my own design (thats why it may look out of time at some points), and also removed 14+ hours of screensaver hehe
Have fun watching it, for the next LD i shall use Chronolapse 😛

The only trouble with Chronolapse is remembering to turn it on lol. Luckily I captured some of both my coding and my drawing stuff, but I could have a lot more if i just had remembered to run it the last couple times i did stuff.

Ludum Dare Fail

So, I spent yesterday, all of yesterday failing to get a basic platforming engine working. Once I fixed one problem, another would arise. So, don’t expect anything playable for the compo. I might have something for the Jam deadline.

I always hate hearing people fail, but I know how it is, defiantly finish up for the jam dont let it sit there mocking you!

Finished At Long Last

This is my first time finishing an entry for Ludum Dare and finishing a game in general (I usually end up with half-finished projects). The code is basically feature complete except for some ideas I didn’t initially plan for, if I had more time for level design and building this game could’ve been a lot nicer… as it is I’ve only got 4 levels done and they’re not much fun, but still: I’m quite happy with what I’ve accomplished in such a short time!

Good night all – it’s 03:00 in the morning here, so sleepy time now… looking forward to playing everybody’s awesome looking entries!

Here’s a link to my entry and a screenshot.
