POSTMORTEM ENCOUNTERS
Before I begin I'd like to point that we are missing a few votes :) You can go play and rate Encounters here
Now let's start by the basics: this was my second Ludum Dare and my 5th Game Jam (on a period of 1year and a half). My comrade Lucas who was in charge of the visual aspects of the game had done a single jam in the past (not a LD). We had 48hours to create Encounters due to some obligations; we couldn't work on the game on Monday so it had to be done by Sunday. We knew we wanted a 3D game with some humor so once the theme was announced the ideas came out quickly. Some were creative and others a bit less but eventually we found what we were going to do by one hour of brainstorming. We were now ready to begin the development:
:ok_hand:* What went good:*
• A lot of good decisions such as changing the game’s scope to a less complicated game early in the development process. • A positive complicity with Lucas: every decision we made was satisfying for the both of us so we didn’t put useless pressure on each other. •A good schedule: I decided to arrange a window of 5hours in case we encounter some problems in the production in order to have time to fix them, along with 4/5hours of sleep and a 4 short breaks each day.
* What went bad:*
•Not enough playtests: in the end, we were so tired that we played the game only the way we wanted it to be played. We didn’t try to break it so we missed some simple problems (ex: a missing collider on the ceiling allowing the player to jump out of the playable area). Such avoidable problems are a bit shaming to be true, and really annoying. •Unrealistic scope for two people and a limited knowledge.
 Conclusion:
In the end, we are both happy and unhappy of the final product. Happy of the decisions we made and the development process. Unhappy for the avoidable problems that we didn’t notice. Next time we’ll focus more on the finitions. I’ve finished to correct all the bugs and will upload the new version when the jam is done :D
Thanks for reading!
