You start as a little seed who must grow into a beautiful plant.

Your goal is not just to keep the plant alive, but also to make it flower and flourish. Lay down roots to collect water, you can use that water to raise up your stem and collect energy. You gain more energy in sunlight and gain more water in water patches. As your energy and water production and capacity increase, you'll be able to produce flowers and even one day a fruit to produce a seed of your own.

Controls - Click on a piece of the plant to select an upgrade. - Use the scroll wheel or left click to pan the camera up and down

Very interesting concept. It has some nice strategic elements. Great peaceful music and mood also. It was initially a little difficult to get my head around, so maybe a bit more explanation could help, but I figured it out after a while. Good job!

Wow, this was a really nice half-idle half-not game. Aesthetics were top-notch, and by the end of the game I ended up with a pretty cool-looking plant! Definitely one of my top jam entries this time around.

Good looking game about plant growing by creating the branches. Pretty simple compared to others in it's genre. And pretty slow when the plant is big. Music is relaxing.

This was really great! Simple and effective art that keeps everything both readable and pretty, especially with the subtle swaying animations. Impressive how dynamic it all is. Pleasant and encouraging audio, and a compulsive balancing act that kept me playing until the end, despite not initially planning to. Really well-designed!

That's amazing! Really loved the dynamic soundtrack... and the ability to build a giant swinging lowercase 'r' to keep most buds in the light.

The camera seemed to pan too high up after winning the game, so I couldn't see my root system in all of its glorious... glory, but that's the only 'issue' I had.

I didn't made a flower, I made a tower.

Loved the game, loved the graphics, loved the music !!
Why do you stop it when we make the fruit ? I wanted to play more (even if the framerate actually started to decrease (I have a 15 yo computer so don't worry I don't think anybody else will ever have issues with that)
I looked a bit in the sources too see the general structure, looks fat haha.
I made my game with love2d too, feel free to take a look!

@mathurin Thank you for the kind words! It stops at the fruit for exactly the reason you mentioned: framerate. It's not your computer, it's the game unfortunately. I don't know what causes it but I'll hunt it down soon. Otherwise I totally would have had a "Continue Playing" option.

I started with base-code of my Scene-Actor-Component setup and that comes packaged with like 100 basic components that I didn't actually use so my source is a lot fatter than it needs to be lol. Most of the "game" code is in the /ld46 folder and /data folder if you wanna see how it works ;)

Guys I liked your game so much! I had a great time playing it!
The idea behind it is really clever, the animation are lovely, and the audio too (both music and sfx)! The only suggestion i have is to improove in same way the graphic (like adding a background).
Very well done!

Nice job! The stem/root splitting logic feels a little arbitrary and there were some parts at the beginning of the game where it felt a little slow. Made me wonder at the time if this would've worked better as a turn-based game? Just a random thought. I got into a better flow towards the end of the game.

The gameplay, visual solution and sound are great!

I want to continue to develop the plant after it has a fruit. Maybe it is worth implementing a full life cycle of the plant? It would also be great to be able to save "photos" of plants.

Very relaxing game. I want to keep playing! :)

Great game! I'm surprised by how much time I spent trying to beat it XD My first run I failed miserably, but I got the hang of the game after that. I had a lot of fun playing it!

This is my favourite game so far! Superb aesthetic, lovely well balanced gameplay that has you going up and down to expand and balance the new requirements. There was no sound on my Linux version, I'm not sure what went wrong there, sorry.

@tompudding Thanks for the tip about the sound on linux. No idea what's going on there but I'll investigate. Thanks for playing!

Super chill :) And I liked the graphical style a lot! Less emphasis on exploration as in my approach, but I liked the balancing game between two resources. I didn't realize from the very beginning that I can branch, so I ended up with tall and very plain plant in both directions.

I won!
Just couldn't stop playing till the end.
I would play an entire game with levels and different types of plants and stuff like this, it was a blast. Definitely my favorite game so far for this jam, it was so much fun, thank you!

That was quite fun, though it did take pretty long to complete. Another tree growing game was https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/sunlit, but both games are very different. My tree is pictured below.

Wow! I can not believe how similar our ideas were! But yours is definately a more polished and complete entry. Well done! I saw it right now in the results page, congratulations for the great results! I had a lot of fun playing it. Beautiful game!

Edit:
Something I was working on but had to scrap due to lack of experience was the plant movement you got integrated so beautifully. I tried to use a physics library but could not wrap my head around. Maybe we could have an exchange about what techniques you used, I would be super interested. Thanks!

Hey great game! I enjoyed it. Very relaxing :)

It is very similar to an idea I had for ludum dare 34, check it out: https://japes.itch.io/grow

Yours is way more stylish and polished though. And balanced! well done.

@mika-la-grand Thanks for playing! That's definitely the fullest tree I've seen! It might be that it took longer because you didn't put many leaves in the sunlight (which doubles their output, which honestly is kind of broken how much energy that gives you lol). Checking out sunlit later today!

@groggi Thanks so much! I'll check out your submission. When I was rating other entries I found at least one other "2D cross section about plant growing where you grow both below and above ground" games. Apparently a lot of us had the same idea. As for the physics, I'm actually not using any library. Each stem segment is just a Position, Angle, and Length. Angle has some default value assigned at creation, and then fluctuates on a sine wave. Length is static (once it's done animating), and Position is determined based on the result of the parent's calculation. Happy to chat more about this on twitter if you're interested, I'm @NotExplosive on there.

@japes Thanks for playing! I'll check it out!
