THE LAST CACTUS

You have the last cactus alive in your possession, and for some reason, everybody is trying to get hands-on it. On top of that, this little cactus drinks a lot of water. Make sure to keep your buddy Cactus alive by giving him water! Slay enemies to get water and feed the Cactus.

HOW TO PLAY

  • Watch out for your cactus health and water levels, and make sure to water it when is needed.
  • Defeat enemies and pick up water containers.
  • Stun enemies using the cactus, to deal extra damage with close-range bullets.
  • Roll to evade bullets and attacks.
  • Hold down jump to jump higher.

CONTROLS

We recommend using a controller since we made it with controllers in mind. The keyboard + mouse was mapped last minute but it gets the job done!

Controller

  • A - Jump

  • X - Shoot

  • Y - Melee Attack

  • B - Roll

  • LB - Water

Mouse + Keyboard

  • ASWD - Move
  • Space - Jump
  • Left Click - Shoot
  • Right Click - Melee
  • Q - Water
  • Shift - Roll

The game itself is fun the only gripe I have is how I'm too stupid to jump onto the roof of the train wagons so nothing against the game just my skills. I really love the graphics and the animation when you water your cactus. Job well done.

This is awesome! The animations and the gameplay are great. You shot for the wild west style, and you hit it perfectly. I sucked at it until I remembered I could roll past their bullets. Those explosive throwing dudes are tough!

Although I can't jump onto the roof of the train, I really like the gameplay until it gets to those two guys who throw barrels down at me. I think fun-ness is one of the most important parts of a game, and the charm & ease of pick up definitely nails the fun-ness here for me. I think it's really good!:)

Animations and graphics are great. Western style looks good too. UI part looks very nice. Especially when you shoot how barrel swaps. Maybe adding something more interesting to the background would make game feel even better.

Amazing world design, movement feels amazing, the gunplay feels amazing.
I really like how much feedback there is as to what's going on in the game. You always know what happened and when it happened.
Great job!

This game is fantastic, the art is great, the UI is awesome also and the mechanics are top. I love that you can hit with the cactus and stun them, also the theme is really nice. The only thing I would have liked is a little bit slower the depletion of my own life, and obviously that the train keeps on going longer and bigger. For me it is a very well done game.

@krebzor Thanks a lot for the feedback! Yes, the difficulty could be modified a bit more, but we ran out of time so we left it to what felt okay at the moment! Thanks again.

Great graphics and sound, the gameplay is pretty smooth, fun and works well. You did some great extra touches like the fade in and out on spawn/death, the overall aesthetic was well put together down to the choice of fonts and the game is pretty well polished overall. I think the second air jump being a bit higher would make movement a bit easier and smoother.

Hodwy partner!? First things first really loved this game. It brings me back to some oooold memories with my old dear cactus Pete. But in my old days I used to get above the train after I fell. Well, that must because my age. Nice art, sound and music fellas!

You guys really nailed this! You took a fairly straightforward concept and were able to polish the crap out of it in your 72 hours. My only issue is I wish it had been more obvious at the beginning that there were barriers for how far down the train you could go. Overall I think this is my favorite jam game I've played so far!

It pains me to say this partner, but there can only be one western themed game set on a steam locomotive with an outlaw on the loose. But I know when I've lost so I'll be on my way now... you deserve it partner. You nailed the western theme! Great game!

@homunculusgames Incredibly solid entry, fellas. The audio and graphics were very very nice. It took me a few deaths to remember to water the cactus, and I also didn't initially realize that you could hold Q down to continuously water him. But I got the hang of it. What actually helped me was to just think of the health system as a more traditional one, like picking up potions and then using them when I'm low on health. Guess I'm just selfish. :) Nicely done!

@hacktrout Hahaha Thanks for handing us the wild west prize we really appreciate it!

@nanolotl @carlofalltrades @pomelouncia Thanks for the feedback guys! Glad you enjoy it!

@jordantanner Hahaha yes at first I was afraid it would feel just like a regular potion because we had it so that picking up the water would heal the cactus but having it so that you have to hold it down creates more tension. Thanks for playing!

One of the games I enjoyed the most in this jam. Audio is great, graphics are great, and I found really fun the fact you must stop yourself in a firefight to water your cactus. I don't know if you plan to continue it after the jam, but you've got yourself some solid basis on which you can add content. Howdy, partner :ok_hand:

So it turns out I suck at this. I don't mind though; the game was fun and well made enough to keep me hitting that retry button. Loved the frantic nature of the gameplay, and the graphics; would love to see continued development on this. Btw just so you are aware I had a minor graphical bug wherein gunshots would remain on screen and never disappear.

Wow, really impressive game for a jam entry! Graphics and animations are great, it feels very clear and responsive. The polish is impressive, everything is consistent: the font, the camera "zoom" effect, the feedbacks... You really paid great attention to details! Congratulation :clap_tone1: :clap_tone1:

Made it to the 2nd batch of enemies - for some reason the game ran like shit on my otherwise decent computer, and would freeze every now and then and just eventually became unplayable

But man, what a blast! That's one of the most "finished" game I've seen in a long long while. Amazing graphics, tons of polish, excellent game feel and overall just fun gameplay. I wish there was a little bit more to manage so the game would feel more interesting in the long run, but it's really freaking cool!
