Karl and Timmy by kuro

[raw]
made by kuro for Ludum Dare 45 (COMPO)

15+ | BLOOD, VIOLENCE, LANGUAGE

This is a story of two men with dreams. Karl, a financial advisor, and Timmy, a would be gangster.

Left click to advance dialogue, right click to skip it alltogether.

screen1.png

Aim with your mouse, left click to shoot, right click to duck/cover. You don't receive any ranged damage when covering, but your aim is off. You still receive full melee damage. Shooting in the direction of a ranged enemy stresses them out - look for blue dots above their head. If enemy has more than one above it's head, he takes cover, and can not be hit, but doesn't attack you.

I didn't focus on gameplay too much this time. I really wanted to do something more with visuals, story, and sound. Wasted a lot of time on game mechanics anyway, since I didn't realize I could have prepared the code ahead of time. Next time...

screen3.png

I barely managed to link Narrot's generated voice files to his texts in time (finished three minutes before deadline). I will make a post-LD version with all characters having voice files, but that'll be pretty much it. I don't really know what to do with this further.

All forms of criticism, however harsh, if fair, are welcome. Also I'd really welcome any improvement suggestions. If you have any ideas and methods of improvement, please, leave them in the comments.

I hope you enjoy, and thank you for playing.

10.14.19 Update:

I've fixed the dialogue UI scaling, a few grammatical errors, and added voiceovers for all the dialogues in the post-LD version.

First things first, love the music track

Gameplay was pretty sweet for such a small game. I like the mechanics you put in there and the graphics worked well. Not 100% sure about the story  but at least Mark got something out of it all

hmmmm i think i got some problems with my browser cuz the game lagged abit for me, so i cant realy give a accurate review cuz of that. i also couldnt move the character for some reason, dont know if that was intended or not.

but, nice to get some story for once :dog: normaly ppl ignore that (me included) and just focus on gameplay. so gg on trying something abit different.

@lombax sorry to hear that. I've made a windows build, and included it on the same itch.io page.

Thank you for your time .)

Very funny game. I bursted out laughing for a good minute within the first few sentences. Art is pretty good as well. The mechanics are also solid, I like the stress mechanic which gave a surprising amount of dept (pun intended) to combat.

Ahahaha^^ this story line is incredible. I really like narrative in this game. I took a lot of fun! Great Story and Work!

It will be really cool if characters speaking like carrot but with some mixer effects like pitch etc

Seems to have a major issue. When I died during the tutorial, it would respawn me without a gun. I somehow managed to skip 2 more stages and dialogue. Good graphics, story, etc. otherwise

@hapax thanx for feedback. Yeah - the fights are very simple. I had a lot more planned for the system, but ya know... compo and time constraints and excuses

@kenster could you describe "respawn me without a gun" with a little bit more detail? thanx .)

That is probably the best story telling i saw in this jam. Lets not get into the little details. And also probably the funniest one.

Graphics and sounds could be improved a little to enhance the player experience but they dont compromise it. In fact its a very competent work for such a short timeframe. Also, the game is too short. I wanted more.

Narrot -> Best narrator

Excellent job!

Nice shooter game!
The graphics despite their simplicity served the game very well!
The music was very good and the narrator voice was a very nice touch!
But please less text between missions! We are playing a shooter not an adventure game  (and I love those games).
Also how you kill the long range attack guys (the ones with the blue bar (?) that come at you? Shooting them don't reduce the life.. Must you shoot them is a specific location to cause damage?

The Narrot is really the MVP of this game here -- it ties everything together! Well, you've got an interesting blue dot/cover mechanic going, but really aside from that, if we didn't have the narrator and nonsensical story, I feel like there wouldn't really be any motivation to keep playing. But the brief interludes really kept the pacing in a way that elevated the game to way more than its (admittedly simply) gameplay. Woo~

@derek-volker I was kind of running out of time, and decided I wanted to finish the story over more gameplay. It wouldn't be much trouble to add more levels, but at the time I didn't playtest it too much, and chose the (in my opinion) safer approach of making a shorter, easier game for LD, since there's a ton of other games to play/rate, over having long untested game that might turn out to be too hard to beat. I just really wanted everyone to be able to beat the game and see the story. Anyway, thank you for your feedback

@paulo-brunassi @ploy Thank you very much .)

@negator2vc You have to wait until the blue dots over their head reduces to one, and then shoot them. It's something Narrot explains before the first gunfight

@ddrkirbyisq I actually like the games where story keeps you in a simpler gameplay loop, although I admit this game's gameplay was way too simple, perhaps even to the extent one could argue if it is even a game at all. I write about the reasons (read 'excuses') in a response to derek-volker in this very comment. Thank you very much for your feedback .)

Fun game but how does this fits to the theme
🎤 kuro
18. Oct 2019 · 14:26 UTC
@evepto Timmy starts with nothing and ends in crippling debt. It was supposed to be quite heavily translated into the game mechanics and whatnot, but I overscoped horribly, so the only thing that made it to the final product is the "from zero to dead" story point. :shrug_tone1:

Well fun game but I wonder if it really fits the COMPO requirement, and I guess the movement of the character would make the game better

@kuro lol I guess I mistaken the requirement for COMPO, I thought the games should be made with nothing at all, never mind hhh

Enjoyed the game very much! That carrot looks just awesome. Focus the storytelling was a good choice. If you would have taken another font, the game would have made a much better polished!

I am sorry for pointing this point out :slight_frown: , but I think we got a couple of young game devs here... And maybe you should at least mark the game with blood and _sexual_ sentence content.

This was hilarious! Well done, especially for compo.
The shootout segments ended up being a little easy for me, I think a reload mechanic might have helped?
The game also unfortunately softlocked after the second shootout, at "and so he got the bags of money", but I can't click to progress, only make shooting noises.

The narration was a nice touch, and I loved how you used it to seamlessly give the controls along with telling the story.

Nice work!
