Death-wall Dungeon by BitOfGold

[raw]
made by BitOfGold for LD 42 (JAM)

A very small, very pixelated retro-style FPS/ARPG (A bit like Catacomb Abyss.)

Get to the exit teleport before the wall of death closes in! You can play here

A bit unfinished but playable I think.

~~The most important feature (a death wall) is currently buggy so maybe it will be in this version maybe not. Midnight is 30 minutes away so not much time left :-O~~

Edit: I corrected the following game-breaking bugs, after the jam: - The win and game over screens are now working. - The death wall (the most important feature) was buggy.

The code was optimized for small code, because this little engine I plan to use in js13k which just started. The whole game is 16.7kB zipped. (not that far from 13kb limit)

Sorry for the minecraft-like graphics. Again, optimized for size, so only 16x16 textures ;)

Quite fast paced and fun following a Retro Action RPG formula of maze and shoot and pick up items, graphics are simple and stylised and do the job - somewhere between minecraft and aforementioned classic RPG, gameplay is simple and fast paced shoot and grab items / find keys etc. However I found when I found the exit the game didn't provide any kind of ending apart from a message saying you found the exit which was a bit underwhelming.

Still it was fun for what it is.

@drnoir Thank you for your patience, and the playing!
I consider the win and death screens game-breaking so I added them in. (Needs Ctrl-F5 to refresh)
No new content added.

this is a pretty fun game! I didn't like that each enemy took a lot of stots to kill and your shots cost a tiny bit of mana, so this game became a 2 button clicker, but still my "all kills" run was pretty fun. Good job!

It's a fun game! I didn't realize that the blue wall was the death wall at the start. I loved the graphics, it reminded be a lot of Doom. I wish that the game was a big longer, and it wasn't clear what the key did either.

Nice mood considering the low res style it still had a very creepy atmosphere, liked some of the sprite work.

Would recommend consistent pixel resolution across pickups, terrain and entities.

the game is really short, but that's a cool idea

Well.. The game was too short and I didn't know what was I doing the whole time (still go to the exit)

**But apart from that, I think the game would evolve to something nice if it only had more time!** :grinning:

Dude, Catacomb Abyss?! Hardly anyone talks about that (awesome) game! Love the style. I think pixelated billboards are woefully underused.

The game is desperately in need of audio to support the awesome graphics. Would love to have some DOS-era MIDI tunes in there, and those blippy fireball noises like CA. It's super small and super short but I would definitely play a larger, more finished version. :)

Neat graphics! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/VePoszPJyYA
