PolyPack by mao

[raw]
made by mao for LD 42 (COMPO)

Instructions

  • Place tile - Left mouse
  • Rotate tile - Q, E, Right mouse
  • Hold - W, Middle mouse
  • Fast-forward timer - S

Fill the grid with polyominoes! Once the timer runs out, the board will be cleared, and any tiles left empty will become permanently blocked.

Your score is the total number of tiles covered plus the number of seconds fast-forwarded (which automatically happens when you can't place any more pieces).

Miscellaneous

This game is written in vanilla Javascript! There's a lot of flexibility where it comes to drawing game objects, and I used that in the form of adding a transition animation to basically everything.

I went past the Compo submission deadline, but I hadn't even seen the theme until 24 hours in, so I think it's fair to submit this to the Compo. If you think that's unfair, please let me know and I will switch this to a Jam submission.

If you don't like the timer, you can use the debug key "2" to disable it. The fast-forward key will go to the next board immediately instead of draining the timer. You won't get any time bonus, though!

My best score is ~~751~~ ~~832~~ 858.

Edit: As of 11/20/2018, there is a simplified version for PICO-8, called Picopack!

Alright, this game is cool shit. Very clever use of the theme, maybe my favorite implementation I've come across so far. Thanks for making this game, it lives in my favorites now.

Nice work. This looked really slick and played great. Bonus points for doing the whole thing in vanilla JS!

Definitely one of the most polished games so far! It took me a very long time to figure out that I was supposed to be placing the tiles on a new layer. I just thought it was a weird game over bug that I could still place tiles after the game had ended. Once I figured that out, though, it was a lot of fun. I really appreciated that the tiles were all different colors. Well done.

Outright awesome :)

That's a really interesting take and right up my alley.
This needs audio badly ;)

Great idea, and very addictive. With a bit of polish, I'd pay for this! Particularly on mobile - it would make a great game to pass a few minutes at the bus stop, etc.

Simple but a strong gameplay experience. If you work this into an app and add audio feedback you got yourself a finished app!

Neat. The game looks really smooth with the animations, such as blocks fading out instead of just disappearing. Some simple sound effects when clicking and dropping blocks would be nice and wouldn't have taken too long to add. I also find it a bit hard to tell how long some of the blocks are. You should have drawn narrow lines on the blocks to separate block pieces. But aside from that, really well made game.

By the way, I also made a tetris-like game this Ludum Dare. Check it out if you like :)

Cool idea! I included it in my compilation video series of the Ludum Dare 42 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/KKcNeeBfE6w
