Shape Quest by Levi D. Smith

[raw]
made by Levi D. Smith for LD35 (COMPO)
Help Mister Square save Shape Land by returning the super spinning power artifacts. Avoid touching all enemies.

Press space to start. Use arrow keys to move.

Enemies:
Magenta Trapezoid - Moves in a straight line and blocks your way.
Yellow Circle - Randomly changes direction.
Green Triangle - Lives in the water and shoots at you.
Orange Pentagon - Randomly changes position and shoots in four directions.

Only runs in 1280x720 resolution! I recommend playing the Windows build, as the animation seems to be much smoother than the HTML5 web build.

For official Ludum Dares, I've used Unity eight times and Stencyl once. I felt that it was time to learn something new. I started out using the Godot engine, but gave up on it after a few hours of having difficulties understanding how the collision system works. I had completed some GameMaker tutorials a few years ago, but this was my first full GameMaker game.

Tools used:
GameMaker - game engine
Inkscape - Vector art
Gimp - scaling graphics
BFXR - sound effects
GarageBand - music composition
Audacity - voice recording and sound modifications

The levels are more challenging than I expected from the description. I like that you really have to learn the enemies patterns to get by them.

The first level was no problem. You had me and my kids fooled on the 2nd level, we kept trying to take the "shortcut" only to get smashed every time. It was pretty tough, but we all persevered and managed to save shape land. Yay! :)

Hm... Well, there were shapes, but where was the shift? ;D

Seriously though, the music in this was pretty nice and the sounds were competent enough, but I don't like this "look." Also, the song for a level shouldn't restart when you die; that just makes it annoying.

Anyway, the game was a lot more challenging than I figured it would be, in a good way. That level where four triangles shoot at you all at the same time was actually harder than the level after it, so maybe the order of those could've been switched, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise that I actually had to think about what I was doing and be careful about how to do it sometimes.

So Shape Quest doesn't really try for anything new, and didn't *quite* fit the theme. Just a plain ol' fun game.

Fun game. The four triangles level was tricky. It felt like the pentagons would sometimes spawn on top of me and kill me :( Would have helped to slide along walls.

I liked this, but level 4 was too hard I think. Also was there any shapeshifting going on?

The levels were definitely more difficult than first glance, but there was some nice progression in difficulty.

nice little game. the pentagon shapes zoomes themselves into me though and sniped me :P you could have used a zelda-ish approach with blinking before they "appear"

This game is proof that sometimes all you need is the ability to move in for directions and some collision to make a good game! I liked the different enemy types, it made for some tricky areas to get through. Art is clean and gets the job done nicely. Music was charming! Well done learning a new engine!

Those Orange Pentagons are nasty , The collision boxes were off , which caused a few annoying deaths (all squares i think). But it was fun

It a pretty game the graphica are well realized if a bit simple. It feels much like4 pac-man. I play though a few levels and didn't see any shape shifting.

Good game, last levels are quite challenging. Nice music. Too bad the animation is buggy on the HTML5 web build, makes it really hard to finish the last level ^^

Cute graphics. Collision boxes on the static objects were a little sticky and could be a little smaller.

Cute game and nice start here for 48 hours! Nice job!
