Jim's Quest by craio95

made by craio95 for LD24 (JAM)
Jim's Quest, developed by craio95 for Ludum Dare 24 Jam. Programmed in C++ and SDL, compiled with Microsoft Visual Studio 2012, graphics made in PyxelEdit, sound created in Bfxr. System requirements: Microsoft Windows XP (may or may not work, tests have been inconclusive) and above, .NET framework 4 (not sure if required).

My first Ludum Dare ever and my first serious game project ever, so yeah... It's not that good. You are Jim, an adult trapped in a kid's body. To "evolve" you need to collect all the DNA found within the levels. For controls, read in-game help. This is just an alpha version. I will continue to develop it until I finish it.

Hmmm I'd say the evolution theme would have made a little bit more sense if the character were evolving through the levels. Here only the levels evolve (:
Stamina limitation doesn't add much challenge in the game, just forces the player to stop what he is doing for a while. If you could find a challenge that would use that it might get more interesting, and the stamina decrease rate and max stamina could be something that evolves.
It seems to me that the fact that you have to get all the DNA and not just reach the warp to clear the level would go with a platform/puzzle game style. So you could add some sequences of choice where the challenge would be to find how to reach all the DNA. For now it's pretty straightforward.
Anyway, the graphics are nice and consistant and the controls are ok.

All the things you said above were intended when I made the dev doc, but considering I started to learn programming 2 years ago and that is my first game, I didn't have the time to implement everything. As it says after the last map, it is still in Alpha. Thank you for your feedback. :D

I have two suggestions:
- Display the stamina as bar so I can easily tell how much I have left from the corner of my eye
- Add some kind of visual cue to sprinting like a slightly different or faster animation. At times I had difficulties noticing when I stopped sprinting (this might actually already be solved by a stamina bar).

Anyway, all-round a solid very simple entry!

Pretty cool game except I can't really see how it fits the evolution theme. I know you have to collect DNA, but I think my player remains the same throughout.

Nice game. Some more variety in the gameplay could help it from getting monotonous. :) Good going, wanna see more of it and hope you'll come back next time.
