Exotic Butterfly Net by GreaseMonkey

[raw]
made by GreaseMonkey for LD32 (JAM)
Dust off your Game Boy Advance emulator, it's time to kick arse and drink green tea.

Tested with VBA-M and Higan.
Colours aren't tuned for a proper GBA so it'll look a bit crap on Higan.

To select a difficulty, hold A or B, then tap START.
(A is for easy, B is for normal, what kind of alphabet book is this)

Controls:
- Arrows: move
- A: attack
- B: focus
- START: reset game

Default VBA-M mappings for the "Windows build":
- Arrows: Arrows
- A: X
- B: Z
- START: Enter

Very nice indeed. I went onto hard mode at first and was like OH MY GOD, but after some practice on the other difficulties it became a lot easier (still very challenging.) Very good music also, was nice to dust off the old GBA emulator! Great stuff!

Very fun game! Moving forward is a little pointless, but the focus is a nice touch. Great work!

I liked the strong Touhou feel to the boss, especially the boss music :)

I was confused about what I was doing but I was having fun doing it! Great graphics and audio and love the old school feel.

Managed to clear easy+normal and get to the boss in hard.
I find the difficulty curve is quite well balanced between the three difficulties.

Some criticism:
- at medium and hard difficulty the boss uses the same coloured projectiles as you do, making them unfairly hard to spot when they are coming straight at from above.
- there is no game over screen after you kill the boss
- there is no clear indication that your hitbox is only your head and your feet can touch projectiles.
- the game doesn't seem to be based of the theme.

Overall, pretty neat that it's a well balanced bullet hell for the GBA

@DomNomNom thanks for voting, I'd just like to reply to one comment:
The reason there is no game over screen after you kill the boss is so you can see your score and lives - I didn't really have much time to add any "nice" functionality for that.

Cool music and funny touhou style game title! Reverent bullet-hell action. I request a special move of some kind.

Really fun game, great energy and music

Maybe tone down the saturation on the colors ? The background sort of blends into the gameplay.

very fun, and nice job with the music. Just because of the lack of ending screen the game looks quite unfinished. By just adding a "gameover" and "press <a> to continue" message to go back to menu, you could correct it and let enough time to player to see his score.
I also think you can improve greatly your overal but just spending 30min-1hour on sprite design

I have nothing wrong to say about this game, apart from the fact that the boss launches a blue fireball sometimes which is confusing because it's the same color as the player's.
Very nice and challenging game, with nice music and art!
Great job!
