Seven.Eat.Nine. by thatwhichis

[raw]
made by thatwhichis for LD33 (COMPO)
***UPDATE***

-Per request, added a version that still refreshes at ~30 FPS but slows game object movement to 1/2 original speed. This may be too slow/still too fast, but was the easiest movement speed change to implement so decided to give it a try.

-Also added a round-counter upon success so the player can see advancement (this was always a planned feature, as the rounds were implemented in the original, but did not have time to implement the player feedback on said rounds - such was also the case with aural player feedback on nine consumption and leaderboard integration).

-NOTE: THE ORIGINAL VERSION REMAINS UNTOUCHED. I did not carry over the round-counter into the original version because I felt it would violate the rules and spirit of the competition. Any other changes I potentially make in coming days/weeks will only be reflected in subsequent versions.

***ORIGINAL TEXT***

A Robotron 2084-like drawn in HTML text characters programmed in JavaScript. Also all the sixes are hunting you because they fear you, see- they attack what they fear. Which is you. Because you're a seven and you eat nines. See. Is metacommentary. O_O

Controls:
-Arrow Keys move, WASD (or ZQSD**) fire, R starts/restarts at loss.

(**per http://ludumdare.com/compo/2011/12/13/dos-and-donts-for-setting-up-your-game/)

Goal:
-Get mope pointz.

Rulez:
-You are seven. You eat nines.
-Fives and sixes evacuate nines they touch.
-Fives do not pursue you but are invincible.
-Sixes pursue you but can be destroyed.
-Round ends when all nines are removed from the board and a new round begins with a higher score multiplier.
-Game over if a five or six touches you.

Known issues:
-Some keyboards don't let you press ALL THE BUTTONS AT THE SAME TIME???
-^Side, semi-related note: slowed game down to 5 FPS for to take screenshots, lol.
-Not preventing default action on keys; if on lower resolution device may scroll.

Goals I didnae get to but might post compo:
-Leaderboard.
-Sound.

I'm impressed by your entry. Hard to play as it goes very fast by moving a whole row or column. Good job.

Chaotic, but a clever play on the 'monster'.

Hard game, but a lot of fun! Very nice take on the topic (as well as a nice take on the very cliché joke :P)

There needs to be a lot more feedback on what's going on in the game. Sounds or anything on destroying a nine would make it a lot better, and possibly a counter as to how many are left

Much too hard, but it's a creative idea!

That's the most unusual game I've played currently -- which is good. I don't know how much this relates to the theme, but it is one hell of a fast paced game to be sure. And working with ASCII characters is so Sinclair ZX81. Lovely!

At first I thought that "Wow, this is some difficult game!" but then I noticed that you can shoot using the WASD keys. Good game, well implemented using javascript :)

This is so clever. If you just slowed it down enough for me to keep up...

Really great novel concept. A bit too fast for me. I had something where i didn't see the game over screen (i didn't think i died) but the game restarted anyway? I had this quite a few times. Didn't affect my score though. Cool idea.

Quite hectic and my reflexes are sadly no match. Consider this an official request for easy-mode.

Hard to play, but I was able to get some nine! When you success in be around the center, you are almost safe. But the fives are the next level of difficulty. Impressive!

Easy-mode is sufficiently easy. Thanks :D

Very unique, nice style. Got much more entertaining when I actually read the instructions, and realized that you could shoot stuff. Nice job!

Very innovative game, I also liked your use of the theme. Some audio would be cool though.

It could be much more fun with a proper difficulty settings. Managed to get a couple of nines but sometimes the score wasn't reset after game over.

Fun idea, definitely a lot of button mashing! After playing many rounds, I didn't feel like I could get any better though.. not sure why that is. Nice entry.

Haha! Funny take on the theme. Very hard to see what's going on.

Nice idea and fun to play. The slower version was much more manageable yet still not too easy. Found it quite hard to focus on the different numbers; using a variety of colours would help but may ruin your aesthetics.

Nice game, the player(7) is a bit hard to see if you are in the middle of 10 different numbers

As a DF veteran I love the ASCII look. I needed the slower version as well, but it was a lot of fun! Twin Stick shooters on the keyboard is interesting.

I like the strict simplicity throughout the whole thing. The main difficulty is at the beginning of the levels... Maybe you could spread out the enemies in a less homogenous way or make them appear later to make it feel more natural. I found the slower version hard enough. Otherwise, great idea, nicely implemented, very playable! :)
