LD10

Sat. Morning Foodstuffs

Ooooh .. these compos always keep me from going to sleep. I think out of the 8 hours I lay in bed I got .. a lot less than 8 hours of sleep. Which is a pity, because I usually get some of my best coding done while I’m unconscious. Anyway, to awaken my soul this morning I ate some Frosted Flakes. Sort of an industrial breakfast .. after I already made it, my wife said, “Oh I could have made you muffins!” It’s the thought that counts, right? Maybe tomorrow.

Grids for all!

For giggles, I added a grid.  I also created some levels.  I had some folks try to play them, but unfortunately, since I didn’t bother to add in a menu or anything, I’m not sure anyone actually played them.

Anyway, I’m not sure I’m going to do much more today.  I need some rest for the final push tomorrow.  I’ll be working on polish tomorrow: menus, explosion animation, shiney level graphics, music, and sound effects.  I was thinking about doing particle effects, but I don’t really feel up to the whole python+c thing this time around.

Phil’s Breakfast Feast!

The wife got into the spirit of things and put together a feast of muffins this morning!  Ha ha!

Background artwork…

I’ve always wanted to spend a good solid morning working on LD background art.  Well, I took my opportunity and here’s 1 of the 5 pieces I was able to whip up…

philhassey7.png

I’m going to be busy for the next few hours working on the wrap up:  better edge detection (using the new backgrounds), menus, title screen, music, sound effects, scoring, maybe even high scores.

THE CAVES OF INSANITY!!

Hey – here’s my final entry for LD10. THE CAVES OF INSANITY!! I had a fun time making this game, the highlight being colorinig all those fun backgrounds. Be sure to check ’em out :) Enjoy the game, it’s pretty short-n-sweet. Download it HERE (win32). Or svn://www.imitationpickles.org/ld10/trunk or HERE (tgz source).

Here’s my wife, our hero, in this game:

And here’s a shot from the final level of the game .. it’s a tricker, but this time I did test all the levels and they can all be beaten :) Good luck!

CAVES OF INSANITY – Post-mortem

Well, not much to say about this entry … I used pygame which was a good choice as usual.  I broke my level into MVC components, which really didn’t matter much, but it was interesting to do.  (I’ve usually done my games as just a single blob.)  It didn’t take any more or less time to do, so I guess I might as well do it, since it makes enhancing a game that much easier.  (Galcon is just one big blob and it’s somewhat painful to work with sometimes.)

The gameplay was the first okay idea I had.  I think half the fun is not playing the game, but messing around with making a million fuses go.  Originally I had it so you could set up your fuses and then light them yourself, but the gameplay seemed pretty slow.  I made the fuse auto-light to give it a more arcade feel, which I think worked.  However, the gameplay isn’t really “great” but I think it’s passable.

I had most of my fun drawing the backgrounds for the game.  I figured since the gameplay wasn’t the strong point I’d go for broke on art.  However, I’ve been in a bad mood about python+C integration the last few weeks so I didn’t feel like writing a particle engine in C, so my explosions ended up being really sorry.  I wish I understood blender so I could render stuff with that, but I don’t use it often enough to retain memory of how to use such a crazy interface.

My sound is usually a pretty strong point.  This time it was a bit weak, I just cranked out a chord progression.  I had some intentions of adding in a viola track over that, but didn’t feel like it.  The sfx were made with SFXr of course.  Really cool tool!  It saved me the bother of recording my handmade effects, which since I was feeling lazy was good.  I prefer to make my own, but it was nice not to have to this time.

Anyway, that’s about it.  Hope you had fun with the game.

The Tools!

Tools of power:

  • kate – text editing
  • gimp – image editing
  • pen and paper and scanner – graphics creation
  • python + pygame
  • gaim + firefox – time wasting
  • SFXr + modplug – sfx & musix

All in all, a good combo. Next compo I need to get over my angst against python-c integration and go back to SWIG or something (like I used in Galcon to get the swarms and effects)

TimeLapse of INSANITY

Okay well .. it’s been a bit of work, but I got one together. Unfortunately, youtube wouldn’t take it. I think it had something to do with something to do with something. Which, means I need to upgrade linux to get … blah blah.

On the more interesting side, I wrote a linear video editor for the task in pygame + pug. It only took about 90 minutes to make the editor. The rest of the time was struggling with encoding issues. The editor works pretty good and plays music along with so you can get things synched just right :)

puglve.png

The program takes in a list of .png files (movie.txt) and lets you cut out chunks and do other things with ‘em. Here’s the video. It’s got great music – thanks to DrPetter’s brother!!

Mr.Splode – level 5!

I made a new level for Mr.Splode — good luck!  To play it, copy it over level 4 and then press 4 from the title screen to play the level.  I’ve also made it compile under linux .. you can grab the new .c and .h from this zip as well.  To compile:

gcc -g mr.c `sdl-config –cflags –libs` -lSDL_mixer -o mr

Check it out.

(02:11:50 PM) philhassey: theme will be released at the start
(02:12:00 PM) philhassey: then you’ve got 48 hours to do whatever ..

(02:12:51 PM) philhassey: not as “intense” as a real 48 hour compo ..
(02:13:08 PM) philhassey: entries won’t be judged, but we’ll post them on the website so there is easy access and people can leave comments and junk
(02:13:18 PM) Hectigo: Sounds good
(02:13:31 PM) philhassey: i’ll post that on the site ..

Experimental Madness!!!

Hey, so here it is. I managed to learn the basics of OpenGL and integrated with tinypy for a basic gamelett. I totally cheated by recycling one of my old games for the logic in this one. Which, I guess is cool, because I was able to get all that code working with tinypy. It uncovered a couple bugs which I fixed. Anyway, on with the game:

Download the goods – click on “main.exe” to run.
linux folks check out svn://www.imitationpickles.org/ld105/trunk ; python build.py

LD11

LD11 – April 18-20 – Less than two weeks warning!

Ludum Dare 11 is coming! Ludum Dare is a regular community driven game development competition. The goal is, given a theme and 48 hours, to develop a game from scratch. Ludum Dare aims to encourage game design experimentation, and provide a platform to develop and practice rapid game prototyping.

Hope to see you there!

-Phil

*the theme voting will be done in batches almost every day that week. So keep checking back. The final round of voting will be during the 48 hours prior to the compo. If you want to influence what is in those batches, edit http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/wiki/ld11:themes and if you think there are themes in that list that are so awful people shouldn’t be force to bother voting on them, join the irc channel and get some folks to agree with you and you can remove them. Lousy and redundant themes will be removed by the ThemeMaster.
