Ludum Dare 47

Idea for stuck in a loop Jam - Scene looping and find objects with timer

working title ideas -

Watch out for black cat? Escape the Glitch

Game Objective Mechanics -

4? scenes looping with a timer find an object in each - black cat?

story / setting

This I need to work out, rough idea is that you are stuck in some sort of computer simulation environment and you need to find the black cats / objects to leave it - so maybe a psychedelic / technological feeling to textures / environments

Gameplay Factors

overall time - the game will track how long it takes you to find object / black cat time limit per scene - there will a time limit per scene before it loops to the next scene

Tools

I will be using Playcanvas the js / WebGL engine

First Screengrab - modified concept

screengrab.png

First screengrab from wip playcanvas build Idea now is to have one scene that loops when timer runs and that you are in some sort of computer environment fixing problems by pressing buttons and maybe solving some simple puzzles but we'll see what I can implement in the 2 days might have to tone that aspect down a lot, also thinking of more ways to implement the looping theme

New pic and update of progress day1

Day 1

So I managed to make some half decent progress - got a prototype level in, an enemy with some movement and some basic scripts - still running into lots of random collision issues which are causing headaches though and slowing me down a bit.

Modifed the game mechanics a bit - I think now I will focus on the loop concept in two ways

  • 1 the scene loops if the timer runs out (bit basic but I guess it counts)
  • 2 the enemy default movement is moving around in a loop - be interesting to see what I can do and how I can tweak it once I get a few enemies in the game and with a fully working script and hopefully some basic follow player AI

wip enemy.png

I'm changing the title to escape the loops too - the enemies are the 'loops' in this case

I'm live streaming as I develop on Twitch btw if you want to watch it's progress https://www.twitch.tv/noirvortex

Update start of day 2

gameplay 1.jpg

So making some good progress now

have added

  • better enemy movement
  • changed lighting - enemies now have a red light and play white and toned down the environmental lighting / added fog
  • added destroy in enemy script on contact with player

gameplay 2.jpg

to do

  • start screen
  • improve collisions if possible - its better but could be better
  • enemies can sometimes go through walls for some reason even they have rigid bodies on both
  • end game when all enemies 'killed'

Finished !

catch the loops

Its a 3D bug catching game, can you catch all the bugs in your tractor beam in the computer before the time runs out and the bugs return?

catch the loops 1.png This was made with Playcanvas

There are a few collision issues at times but overall I'm quite happy with it
