Ludum Dare 54

One of my favourite themes of all time made it to theme voting!

I'm just gonna gush about "Decay" for a bit.

"Decay" is a wonderful theme.

It does have some more "generic" or "boring" interpretations - "help, our kingdom is decaying" and the like, but that's not all it is! The best themes have creative interpretations mechanically, visually, or thematically, and "decay" has a bunch of options.

Mechanically, anything on a timer is decaying. You can style that in a bunch of creative ways, for example: - plants that die if they spend too long in darkness - cars/machines that rust over time - which you can accelerate with something like rain - a match 3 game where the pieces crumble into dust over time - power that "decays" - you start of strong, but the more you use your power, the faster it runs out - batteries or radiation

There are loads of possibilities and I'm sure you're all much more creative than me.

Then, there are the story-based implications. Anything to do with plants, or something like the Flood in Halo, works nicely, but there's also things like houses falling into disrepair, radiation, or you could go for a general sense of "rot" in something like politics. There are a ton of options.

And finally, there are some INCREDIBLE visual styles that you can pull off with this theme. I mean look at this, from a quick deviantart search: decayemby/emistrandar_de7h3at-pre.jpg Source

Obviously stuff of this quality isn't possible in a jam, but you can get a lot of mileage from very little here.

In, for the first time in three years

It's quite fitting that two weeks after I finish bringing my previous entry to Steam (and soon Xbox), LD is happening again!

I'm still on Unity, but my aim is to get a bit competitive with jamming again and I've got 10 years full time experience with it. I haven't really been competitive for a couple of years!

My tech stack is: - Unity - Gimp or possibly some Adobe InDesign - some sort of algorithmic music generator like wolfram tones - not generative ai - a Unity skeleton that I'll be publishing shortly. It's got the annoying polish bits sorted like a menu, volume sliders, key rebinding, that sort of thing. - https://github.com/eriksk/googlyeyes - a must-include in all Unity projects, I usually delete the blender files and make some flat circles because I'm far more comfortable in 2D 😂

Idea sorted

It's 4am here and I've been asleep since long before the theme reveal 😂

I'm going to have maybe 4 hours total over the next few days for working on this, so my scope has to be pretty small. I'm thinking of remaking my first LD game from six years ago - I've improved so much since then, it'll be interesting to see if I can improve it! I have a few ideas for improvements, and I think I'll be able to make a few simple enemies work too.
