Ludum Dare 57

The little Ribux is out looking for a hole

progress01.gif

Ribux suddenly found himself feeling like exploring the world. But not the top side, no, the strange holes that could be found around his planet felt much more intriguing. But first he had to find one.

I'm coding my game in vanilla js without any frameworks. I got a late start and might be extra restricted on time, but that wont stop me from trying at least :)

A hole in the dark

progress02.gif

As the darkness fell around her, Ribux suddenly fell into what she was looking for. A cave entrance! But so dark, and no way to light it up! This could be trickier than she first anticipated.

Glowsticks are working!

progress03.gif

I got glowsticks fully working now. I had to implement direction to the player quickly and change the sprite a bit. It's starting to feel really good, but a bit empty, so next is probably some game juice and then on to some more game mechanics.

Hud done and some particle effects are in

Now you can take fall-damage and use shovels to dig through areas that hinder you from progressing. But keep in mind that all tools are a finite resource. I need to work some more on the particle effects as they have some issues right now, and I want more of them. But progress is progressing!

Level transition and sounds

progress05.gif

Level transition is working and feels quite seamless now. If you manage to hit the pit while traversing to next level, you get some bonus ignored fall-damage. I have also made sound and music and even though there's still some finetuning (har, har) to do, it's starting to feel nice.

Ribux as available to play

So, after another wonderful weekend of programming my game is published! It's always hard to find focus when your family runs around you and demands attention, but my wife and kids has also been very supportive. Now it's of to try out all of your wonderful games and maybe try to start writing a post-mortem. My game can be played here:

If you'd like to support my good friend who always is coding by my side during ludum dare, check out his game as well. His art is awesome:

The importance of web-builds (if possible)

I just wanted to give my 2 cents on the importance of having some kind of web-build of your game. While I do understand that some use tools that might not support building for web, always try to find a way to support it. Most modern engines, like Godot, Unity and Unreal has it. If you're using something like raylib or love, there's tools for building for web also (Like love.js, Löve web builder and emscripten).

The reason is mainly that, now days, everyone SHOULD be reluctant to download unknown binaries and run them on your computer. I for sure don't, even though I trust 99% of you all, you never know what hides in those runtimes. A workaround is using a virtual computer for testing, but that puts a lot of effort on the end user for playing something that they don't even know if they are going to enjoy.

So yea, if you're looking for a lot of feedback or ratings, you should also be sure to make web-builds of your game a priority.

Giving hi-res and Godot a try

It's awesome working on Ludum Dare again! This time I'm going to try Godot for real. I've grown accustomed to writing my own engines in js and this is a bit of a new thing for me. This also gives me an opportunity to up my art a bit since animations are much more viable in a ready made engine. So without further ado... I present Chrystal the pug!

Screencast From 2025-10-04 13-17-15.gif

We lost the first hours in Sweden to get some good sleep and quite some time to figuring out what to do. Hopefully I'll be able to put in some mechanics in the next few hours to be able to put some more focus into content after that. Happy coding everyone!

Fetching treasures

Now Chrystal has found treasures around the area! Let's find a better place to put it all. Progress is slow when you're learning, but it feels solid for now. I'm enjoying the ease of animating everything and making it feel alive.

How do you cheer up someone that's been hurt?

Laura is feeling down. She is wearing the cone of shame and needs some help cheering up. What's better than a big pile of sticks? Can you make her feel good again? Chrystal is doing her best
