On themes and creativity

Hi everyone, Providence with a little post again. I see a lot of people feel discouraged by a bunch of the themes. I just wanna put out there that I belive you should try regardless. Not always is there a jam like the Ludum Dare where there's so many people who will actually play your game and leave helpful feedback and a theme should not stop you. Here's some tips from me to help make it easier for you:

  • Pull up a dictionary and try out alternative meanings you might not have known about (if very obscure, reference it somewhere tho)
  • Put the theme on a blank paper or whiteboard and just stare at it. Start trying to make sentences after a couple minutes and put those around the theme. After like 4 to 10, start actually thinking if any of those could make a game you'd like
  • Talk about it with friends and family and employ their brainpower (or brainrot). No shame in using someone else's good ideas.

Even if after all that you can't think of any good game, know that theme is just one of many scoring points. Just make a tiny version of that game you've been wanting to make for years. If you properly put on your game page that you couldn't adhere to the theme but still wanted to participate, I bet 90% of people here will appreciate your honesty and desire to keep going.

Make something great, y'all. You have it in you :)
