I did only make it to jam last time also 😀 I could have done it to compo, but I was wanting to add music and sounds and was getting stuck with it :o, but other than that the game was finished. Can definitely say, that the very first priority should be to finish the prototype and THEN flesh it out 😀

yeah, that would be the recommended way, but most of the time i want some graphics to have a good feel of where the game is going, or there is a certain picture i have in my head for the game. I have participated 4 or 5 times but never made the compo
