Sandbox games are about exploration and unexpected interactions. They often focus on <a id=\"f7\" title=\"emergent gameplay\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emergent_gameplay\">emergent gameplay<\/a> rather than <\/span>scripted events, and avoid explicit goals even going so far as to omit explicit win\/loss conditions. Examples range from simulators like SimCity or &#8220;toys&#8221; like the creatures in Black &amp; White, to the non-mission-based parts of open world games like GTA. Alternatively, you can take the theme literally, and make any sort of game about sand or boxes or boxes of sand. Or really, any other interpretation of the theme that you can dream up is perfectly valid.<\/p>\n <p>In addition to the gameplay theme, in keeping with the classic LD format, there&#8217;s also an &#8220;aesthetic theme&#8221;. The aesthetic theme is <a id=\"ux-1\" title=\"Cute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cuteoverload.com\/\">Cute<\/a> (or Anti-Cute). As always, the aesthetic theme is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL and you are free to ignore it.<\/p>\n <ul>\n <li>There&#8217;s no strict start\/end times, just limit yourself to 48 hours over the weekend.<\/li>\n <li>All gameplay code, art and assets must be created by you during the 48 hour period.<\/li>\n <li>You may use any tools, engines or libraries you wish (unlike regular LD which has some restrictions on allowed tools).<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n <p>That&#8217;s it!\u00a0 Have fun!<\/p>","time":"July 24th, 2009 9:27 am","title":"July Mini-LD \u2014 SANDBOX"}
