I’m Sam, and this is my first Ludum Dare. This is also the first time I’ve ever made a game. Ever. So. This is going to be interesting! I’ve been playing games for about as long as I can remember, so I think I have a properly experienced repertoire. My earliest game memory is being too afraid to play Super Mario Bros. when it came out, so I only played Duck Hunt. (Figure THAT one out.) I’ve been coding in all sorts of web languages for about 10 years (Jesus, does that make me feel old) so I’m going to stick with my trusty HTML5/Javascript for this one, since it’ll have the lowest learning curve. I’ve messed around with a number of engines and languages – Unity, Löve/Lua, Python, GameMaker – but none have stuck yet. Plus, it feels like HTML5/JS is in a sort of Atari/NES-esque infancy as far as games go. When I look at some notable games from recent years, many of them could have been made nearly exactly the same in HTML5/JS. Limbo, Braid, Canabalt. It’s just a matter of talent applying itself to the platform, as far as I’m concerned.

Besides this being my first LD and my first game, I also have plans with my favorite lady over the weekend. We have a few plans all over Massashusetts (yes, I’m a Masshole) so I won’t have anywhere near the full 48 hours to work. (I saw a few Boston-area LDers, but I’m repping the North Shore.) So, first LD, first game, even more limited time constraints. I’ll be happy if I make something that works, let alone ends.

HTML5 + Javascript (powered by the Akihabara engine for the sake of getting right to the game-making, but I intend to make my own JS game engine soon.)

Coda for making with the code

Photoshop for pretty pictures

GarageBand + my Strat + CFXR for noises

Here goes something.

August 20th, 2010 10:32 am
First!"}
