Maybe for LD #19?","spam":"N"}],"epoch":1282634100,"likes":0,"metadata":{"p_key":"69266","p_author":"NiallM","p_authorkey":"785","p_urlkey":"105069","p_title":"Fungal Wonder Post-Mortem","p_cat":"LD  #18 - Enemies as Weapons - 2010","p_event":"LD18","p_time":"1282634100","p_likes":"0","p_comments":"1","p_status":"UPD5","us_key":"785","us_name":"NiallM","us_username":"niallm","event_start":"1282262400","event_key":"4","event_name":"LD18"},"text":"<p>First, I thought it might be worth posting all the images I made for the game:<\/p>\n <p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/watercolours.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-26937\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/watercolours-550x193.jpg\" alt=\"watercolours\" width=\"550\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/watercolours-300x105.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/watercolours-550x193.jpg 550w, http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/watercolours.jpg 1204w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\" \/><\/a>(I&#8217;ve hidden one image above the second ship to avoid spoilers)<\/p>\n <p>This LD was pretty much a dream.\u00a0 I&#8217;d already decided I was going to be using watercolours for the graphics (since I&#8217;ve been painting with them quite a bit lately), and then on seeing the theme I had an idea for a game that would really benefit visually, and tie into my current reading habits (again, Jeff Vandermeer&#8217;s City of Saints and Madmen).\u00a0 From there the whole thing went incredibly smoothly, with no major roadblocks.<\/p>\n <p><span id=\"more-26936\"><\/span><strong>What went well:<\/strong> The graphics, obv.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve only just started to find my feet with watercolours, and they were perfect for this game.\u00a0 I also really like how the game environment reacts to the player&#8217;s actions and starts fighting back if they start destroying the fungi.\u00a0 That&#8217;s something I&#8217;d like to explore further.<\/p>\n <p><strong>What went not so well:<\/strong> The explosions when a fungus or the player dies.\u00a0 They&#8217;re just rubbish.\u00a0 I think the coloured particles are all wrong, and also I need to improve my particle generator; it&#8217;s just too simplistic as it is.\u00a0 And while I think the music is basically perfect, the SFX are really clumsy.\u00a0 They&#8217;re a mix of recorded and synthesized sounds, and they don&#8217;t really sit together.\u00a0 I think I need to study foley techniques to get better at this sort of thing.\u00a0 Also the endings are a bit perfunctory; I should have probably had some images or animations rather than the simple wipes accompanied by text.<\/p>\n <p>Oh, and I&#8217;m not sure if I made it clear enough that there are essentially two styles of play: peaceful (scan all the fungi) and destructive (destroy all the fungi).\u00a0 This was related to the whole business of the game environment reacting to your actions in a smooth manner, so it&#8217;s fairly benign until you start to poke it with a stick, at which point it becomes increasingly hostile.\u00a0 i.e. the point where you collide with a spore and start destroying fungi is the point at which your mission goes bad, and it becomes all about survival rather than scientific research.<\/p>\n <p><strong>What I&#8217;m unsure about:<\/strong> The difficulty.\u00a0 Judging difficulty&#8217;s always hard, and from the comments I&#8217;ve had so far it may be too difficult.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure if anyone&#8217;s seen both endings yet?\u00a0 But then my benchmark for difficulty in this kind of game is Hydorah, which I&#8217;m rubbish at, whereas I can easily beat my <em>Lair<\/em>.\u00a0 So, yeah, I&#8217;m not sure.<\/p>\n <p><strong>The Future?:<\/strong> I might possibly do more with this setting.\u00a0 Certainly the visual style is worth exploring some more.\u00a0 And (perhaps because Vandermeer&#8217;s book currently has such a hold on me) the whole idea of basing an environment around fungi seems incredibly rich, and full of potential.\u00a0 We&#8217;ll see.<\/p>\n <p><strong> <\/strong><br \/>\n Oh, and fwiw I&#8217;d definitely recommend other people try the watercolour route for this kind of competition.\u00a0 I found it so easy to create graphics that looked good (and unique).\u00a0 Just draw some simple shapes (pencil), then pick a couple of colours and let them blend together on the paper.\u00a0 Really I spent more time waiting for the paint to dry (during which I got on with other things) than I did painting.<\/p>\n \n <p>Tags: <a href=\"http:\/\/ludumdare.com\/compo\/tag\/postmortem\/\" rel=\"tag\">postmortem<\/a><\/p>","time":"August 24th, 2010 2:15 am","title":"Fungal Wonder Post-Mortem"}
