They also discover that Tankado's death was not natural, but orchestrated by Hulohot, who was hired by North Dakota. North Dakota turns out to be none other than Numataka, the chairman of Numatech, a Japanese computer company that wants to acquire Digital Fortress and sell it to the highest bidder. Numataka had tricked Tankado into believing that he was his long-lost father, and persuaded him to give him the passcode to Digital Fortress before he died. Meanwhile, Becker manages to evade Hulohot and find the ring that Tankado had given to a Canadian tourist. He contacts Fletcher and tells her the passcode, which is actually a phone number. Fletcher calls the number and reaches Numataka, who confesses his role in the scheme. He also reveals that Digital Fortress is actually a trap designed by Tankado to expose the NSA's illegal surveillance. The code contains a worm that can destroy TRANSLTR's databanks if it is run. Strathmore had unknowingly activated the worm when he tried to decrypt Digital Fortress using TRANSLTR. Fletcher and Strathmore rush to stop the worm before it causes irreversible damage. However, they are too late, as the worm has already corrupted most of the NSA's data. Strathmore decides to sacrifice himself by setting off a grenade in TRANSLTR's core, hoping to destroy the worm and save some of the data. He also confesses his love for Fletcher and asks her to forgive him for his mistakes. Fletcher escapes from the sub-levels and reunites with Becker, who has arrived at the NSA with the help of an FBI agent. The novel ends with Fletcher and Becker attending Strathmore's funeral, where they are approached by Deputy Director Midge Milken, who tells them that Strathmore's sacrifice was not in vain, as some of the data was recovered. She also tells them that Numataka was found dead in his office, apparently killed by Hulohot after he failed to pay him.
