Naming your game? We had trouble...

YOU CALL THE SHOTS! is Guitar Hero but with Movies.

So we originally thought we'd call it Movie Hero.

But then...that just sounded like you would play a Hero from a Movie. Like Superman or something.

So we tried Movie Buff Hero.

Definitely better. But then it could just be a "Buff" Movie Hero. Like The Rock or something.

Okay, forget Guitar Hero. What about our other inspiration, Dance Dance Revolution?

We considered Buff Buff Movie Revolution!!. It sounded fun. But it still wasn't clear what the game was.

OK, what about SingStar? Our game could be called SceneStar?

But that sounded too corporate.

For a long while we thought we'd "zany-up" this title so that it sounded more fun:

Super SceneStar: Movie Buff Madness!

or even

Super SceneStar: Movie Buff Madness Episode 1 - Baldo's Night In

This made us chuckle. But we realised that to outsiders (you) it just looked like a bad title.

The Right Name Is Important

A good name sets expectations about the game you're about to play. For the quick-and-dirty games in Ludum Dare, setting expectations is even more important. It does half the work of a tutorial, getting the player ready to "get" your game.

Plus a good name attracts a larger audience and those much-needed ratings.

Learn To Get Help

On the brink of having nothing better than Super SceneStar: Movie Buff Madness! I shared a video of the game with some friends and asked if they could come up with a better name.

It bloody worked.

There was some argument over whether these names made you sound like a movie director, but given that half of our game was about prediction/reaction "You Call The Shots" seemed to work.

So, we just added an exclamation mark to Ian's suggestion and voila:
