Last year I had a similar issue where experimental toying prevented a web release, and I wanted to avoid that fate this year - so I swapped to 2d backgrounds (still from blender). Then, I tried to recreate some of the ambiance that was lost with particle effects.\n\nDid it work? Does it look passable? Would you use this technique to speed up your pixel art?
