"Ahoy!" retrospective
This is my third ludum dare and my 9th game i've made overall (literally all in jams). However, since the last Ludum Dare I've basically only made UI-based games. This is why I resolved to make something satisfying and action packed. I made the game more relevant to my own interests by theming it around a sea captain. I spent around half of the jam obsessively making combat feel crunchy and like an actual naval battle - I allowed the player to spam to recreate broadsides, I added a fire sound effect, I added copious particle effects and I added screenshakes. This is probably my best Ludum Dare entry. However, it's not my best game overall. The combat is a bit too spammy, the AI is stupid and looking at the compass means you have to split your vision between the bottom right corner and wherever your boat is. However, I think I nailed that "crunch" and made firing broadsides very satisfying.
