A bit of postLD thoughts

Have been a bit busy last weeks, and now I can write out about that things worked out, and things, that didn't. Also, I will play a lot of great games in next few days!

And I start with little LD timeline, just to analyze it a bit.

Timeline

  • Check out voting final round themes and makes simple ideas, pointing out which theme will be interesting to implement.
  • Running for 10 minutes ๐Ÿƒ. This have been refreshing and some kind freeing up your mind, so you can get more ideas.
  • Playing No Mans Sky ๐Ÿš€ until theme was announced. Early reveal theme hours are fine.
  • Playing more.
  • Sleeping a lot ๐Ÿ’ค
  • Getting up and cry. At the first sight theme was ugly.
  • At the second - too.
  • Watching LD discord and LD main page for ideas. My ideas, that has been generated at theme voting time was a bit uninteresting.
  • Inspiration comes in! I don't remeber, what exactly inspires me at that moment, but this feels great.
  • Draw some gameplay sketches, trying to point out gameplay.
  • Drawing one level and refine gameplay points.
  • Started developing. After 12 hours after start...
  • Basic platformer mechanics was done in few hours with ease.
  • Implementing gravity mechanic was hard. To the end of first day simple prototype was done.
  • Day one:
  • 1-core-gameplay-end-of-day-one.gif
  • Sleeping a lot ๐Ÿ’ค.
  • Starting making assets.
  • Spend few hours to logo
  • Making some tilemaps (mostly unused).
  • Restart making seamless tilemap to background.
  • Spending some time with family
  • By the end of second day, I've got simple graphics, many bugs, pretty buggy movement and decision to fit in jam
  • 2-2-day-two-simple.gif
  • Sleeping a lot ๐Ÿ’ค
  • MONDAY. I wish there more weekend days.
  • Work
  • A lot of work
  • Rewriting gravity and movement systems. My platformer mechanics was trashy.
  • Sounds
  • Simple music
  • Particles and lights. Fighting with bug with shadow in godot (it remains unsolved)
  • Simple level at the last 30 minutes
  • Can't upload game to LD server ;c
  • Yeah, game uploaded ๐Ÿ‘
  • 3-2-boxes.gif

This event gives me a lot of inspiration? motivation? I don't know, what is this, but I can make a game in few days, and this drives me. Even if game was just fine, and not super satisfied with it.

Few points to future me:

Points to the next LD

  • Running is great, it helps generate ideas.
  • Make a plan, and check that every item is actionable and you know what exactly you need to complete this item.
  • Take a rest, sleep well.
  • Learn math. It helps. TODO make a link to post on my website with source code self review.

Points from previous LD, that worked out great

  • Review voting final round themes and write some ideas. Try to write at least one idea per theme.
  • Talk with your family and friends, give them list with themes and discuss ideas.
  • Before starting coding, write down every aspect of the game and figure out every point. It's better to spend some time at this stage, than spending time implementing a lot of things that didn't work well.
  • Pizza is :fire:
  • Don't try to make hard things, that you didn't know how to do. Make basic gameplay, and implement hard things in post-LD version.
  • Don't refactor early
  • Take a rest in a day before LD.
  • Make your home tasks in a few days before LD.
  • Don't forget your family. Games are great, but peoples are way more important.
  • Put the game online even if it completely unplayable. This way you have way more XP.

Looks like that's all. And now I'm thinking about putting some narrative and game design elements. Would be great, if you write some ideas in comments

Oh, and the game is here: link
