Archimedes Shenanigans by Andrian

[raw]
made by Andrian for Ludum Dare 60 (JAM)

The second century BC. Somewhere on the coast, a fleet approaches. The most dangerous weapon on the island… is a mirror.**

Our choice for Old Tech is Archimedes’ heat ray. According to legend, Archimedes used mirrors to concentrate sunlight and set enemy ships on fire. Historians debate whether this actually worked in battle. We decided to test it in Unreal Engine. Now everyone has even more questions. Read about the legend

I am not sure if links work on LudumDare

:sunny: Your mission: defend the island.

Walk up to a mirror, interact with it, and aim the beam at incoming ships until they become extremely expensive firewood.

The beam works only while the sun is up. At night, our ammunition supplier disappears below the horizon and stops answering calls.

:video_game: Controls

  • Mouse — look around and aim.
  • E — interact with a mirror.

:hourglassflowingsand: Our greatest enemy was the schedule.

Between a particularly rough weekend and our work schedules, we didn’t manage to implement even a quarter of what we had planned. We wanted to defend an island. Instead, we spent most of our time defending a few precious hours of development. Our work schedules broke through the defenses.

Honestly, we’re disappointed with how it turned out. We had enough ideas for a whole game and enough time for a playable statement of intent. Still, we made it to the finish line with a mirror, a few ships, and some very specific complaints about the number of hours in a day.

 But we can’t wait to play everyone else’s games!

We’re excited to see what you’ve made for Old Tech, enjoy your clever ideas, and finally play something where every bug doesn’t know us by name.

Thanks for trying our game. Sunscreen won’t save these ships. :fire:
